Thanks for this video, and let me say that you explain it's use very well. I have had a Coleman Peak 1 Model 400 stove forever, and I have always loved it. Basically the same as yours except it had the 3 fold out feet exactly like the military model you showed us. It is built like a tank and has lasted me for decades. I want you all to know that you should always empty the stove completely when you are storing it for any extended period of time, because the insides and generator will gum up and leave a coating on the insides that will seriously affect it's performance. If you ever make this mistake, fill it completely with denatured alcohol, pump it up and actuate the fuel level and flame adjuster several times and let it sit for several hours. Turning the fuel level off of course. You could, at times, light it for very short period of time to burn out some of the plaque. Do this several times over the course of several hours. This will clean both of the needle valves that are the problem. When you are done, pour all of that denatured alcohol out into a glass container and you will see how much crap you have dissolved from the insides. You have now restored your stove to factory new condition, and I can just about guarantee it will perform like new. Don't forget to re-oil the gasket in the pump, and very loosely, or not at all, tighten the fuel cap. IMHO, do not store it tightened. Give the seal a chance to relax while it's stored. This works for lanterns too. I have the single mantle Peak 1 Model 222 lantern, which I absolutely love, for it's compact size for backpack camping. I made the mistake of leaving it full of fuel stored for maybe 2 years. It was so coated on the inside it would not work at all. The needle valves were completely plugged. I thought I would have to replace the generator, which is no longer available. The above technique restored it to new condition, and all without having to dismantle it. Sorry for the long post, but I thought it would help all of you who's stoves and lanterns are not working as they should.
yep fuel will dry up and clog everything often when i have found these stoves at garage sales it was because it was left with fuel over a long time and gummed up..pick them up cheap give a good clean and they roar back to life

Glad it was helpful!..i have found if you understand how it works..it is a lot easier to trouble shoot when it goes wrong..often they over pump when its already a hot day and the tank dont need it and then raw fuel fills that firberglass bowl and runs over..which can be a very bad thing
Nice older Coleman stove you have there Blackie. I have one like it but it's silver in color. Also have the 2 burner model. Thanks for explaining how to work it properly. Haven't used my gas stoves in years. I thought they were finicky and I had faulty stoves. Now I know it was user error. I have a Coleman Northstar gas lantern that I've been using for over 20 years that I love. I Bring it on all my car camping trips. Never seen the World War 2 Coleman before. Didn't know about them. Really neat! Thanks! for the knowledge.
I knew you’d help me decide. I was looking for one more fairly portable, simple stove for skillet cooking and alittle heat control when wood can’t be the option but did not need pressurized bottles. Why not, I’ve been using pump-up coleman 2 burners and lanterns for years.
I was a tanker and we had one for each tank. We never used it because it was too difficult to get gasoline for them because our equipment mostly used diesel fuel and the vehicles that used gasoline seldom would give up their extra supply. Gasoline stored on the outside of a tank in a fuel can makes a great Molotov cocktail. I have one like the one demonstrated that I have used since 1981.
Great job on explaining how to use and avoid a fire!! Alot of people I think are scared of using the gas model for this reason! They go with the propane model. The gas model will last Alot longer, in burn time!
The current small stoves are either the msr xgk ex or a coleman 550b. Why? They run jp8. (Kerosene) it’s all about logistics... in the mid 80’s the transition to a single fuel military began. The reason was to simplify supply logistics.
Good video Blackie Coleman also makes Dual Fuel stoves and lanterns, which use coleman fuel AND unleaded gasoline! I have a .5 gallon can to refill them plus larger cans for storage, that I refill at beginning of hurricane season and then late fall. Any fuel not used goes into my truck! I've used them for years, great products!
FYI, model 508 isn't made anymore and new single-burner Coleman stoves nowadays don't have the needle valve and second-lever setup. It's actually an eccentric cam that pushes the stem of a tire-type Schrader valve. Thus, unlike the 508 you have, an additional lever isn't needed to adjust simmering. Great video nonetheless !!
Great educational video Blackie. I have a Coleman stove like yours and also a two burner. For day hikes or backpacking I use a brass Seva stove. Good topic, thank's for sharing.
Back around 66 or 67 I purchased a Coleman 502 which I used to make my hot tea while hunting. There was an older man at the camp who liked to pull a cork. He wanted that stove, but I would not sell it to him as I worked hard to pay for it. Later on I guess the kids got hold of it and it went away, but it was a good stove.
i hear ya..they gotta be watched close..wife and i were at a campground once and we were asleep in tent..when i heard a set of foot steps..coming..my 2 burner was up and walking across the campground to join the drunks at their camp cook bacon..but when i got dressed and walked over..they told me they had found my wantering stove and kept it safe for me..lol
Good video.... but I never liked Coleman stoves - too complicated. Back in the 60's i bought a Swedish gas stove made by Sevia for backpacking. It ran on "white" gas also called unleaded gas :-) . It was made of all brass. It is still as good as new. Looks used but works fine. Just saying... later...
There was a time that the svea123 and optimus 8r were the most popular stoves among Appalachian trail thru hikers. The 123 was also a favorite of Colin fletcher the famous writer and backpacker. He carried one on his famous solo hike of the Grand Canyon. The reason for this was the extreme simplicity and reliability.
Yep! Mine was and is a good stove. It is light weight, and last forever. If I needed a gas stove it was what I carried. I had a homemade alochol stove for heating coffee, tea, etc. but for cooking therre was my swea which could eve handle a loager pot. BTW: I have seen those Coleman Stoves blow up - not often but they do. Because they are so heavy they are only really good for car camping, etc. later..........
i have that same stove its my favorite. you can turn it way down for a simmer. i have several .the new duelfuel stoves like it wont simmer very well great for boiling.i love my colemans .the 503 mod is a great stove you can find them on ebay. thx blackie.
They can present a problem in cold temperatures. Other than that it worked great when I camped in Arizona. Very informative video because as always I learned something from you.
Great point! i dont have that issue of deep cold temps in alabama low teens is about it..but i know of people who have sat and held the tank of the stove against them to warm it up first in bitter cold
I have an old single burner, a double and triple burner Coleman stove. They work great. The double burner I took the fuel tank off and converted to propane.
I have a Coleman stove around here somewhere. I can't recall the model number, may be #504 ? It works great. I picked it up from the Salvation Army for 99 cents. Thanks for the instructions, I had to fiddle with mine to get it going, now I know more for next time.
I have one of those stoves... kind of. It is the dual fuel stove. Unfortunately there is no fine tune to it. All there is is the little red handle on/off valve. The thing is on, or off. Simmer? Nope... I have used it a lot and you do for the most part learn to work with it, but I wish mine were like yours.
the duel fuel had that prob ...how they got it to be dual fuel was make the needle in it bigger..to be less clog from burning pump gas. this left it less adjustable..i had one myself and sold it and went back to this stove.
I have two 533's 1990 and 1991, still going strong. Hint: It's been my experience that if your getting all that yellow flame in the beginning, and have to pump 60 times to get the pressure you want, the generator needs cleaned or replaced. It's getting clogged. Not hard to clean. Just a little tedious.
@@BLACKIETHOMAS Just be real careful with that wire in there when you take it out. 0000 steel wool it in one direction. Try to keep its shape best you can. It goes in a separate tube inside just for the wire inside the tube. Blow some Carb cleaner through the tube, and pipe cleaner it a couple times letting it sit a few minutes in between should do the trick.
