Great video Blackie, thanks for sharing! I planned on stacking a millbank bag with my Grayl even before I bought it. That camp craft version looks PERFECT! BTW, This is just me, but if something happens while you're filling that bag tied to the end of a stick, and your knot comes undone, you're gonna lose the bag AND the outer bottle to the Grayl. Don't take that chance. Just drop a rock in the bottom of the bag and fill it that way. It may take two or three dips to get the job done, but no way to lose your bottle. That's just me though.. Another idea if you're in a bind and you have a Mora knife is to stuff the sheath with a piece of cotton and you can pour muddy water in and it comes out clear.

Great idea there. Millbank bags became fashionable again a while back. Due to their popularity they shot up on price. As a thrifty Scotsman I use a conical felt jelly bag that belonged to my late gran (it looks like a witch's hat)with a nylon stocking stretched inside to keep some of the crud off the jelly bag itself. ok thanks. I was looking at getting the mill bank bag from SRO, but glad I watched this. Nothing wrong with the SRO, just really wanted something more compact. I like how this fits the grayl and is more condensed kit.

Being British and an airborne veteran I use a millbank to pre-filter the water for my Grayl. I keep it in the front pocket of my water bottle carrier. I love the Grayl but it's too bloody expensive. Yes I know R&D costs money and that it's well made but if Mrs. Sprague ever found out how much it cost she'd kick me in the pants lol. Reat video as always Blackie. Stay safe, happy trails.

Great explanation clip. Just ordered one for my Grayl. Being in QC, Canada, shipping as expensive as product. Then exchange rate on top of this, well worth saving on changing that Grayl filter more often than necessary.

This idea will work! Pre-filtering the water before it goes through the filter is a great idea to get rid of a lot of the bigger chunks of stuff in the water you gather. I believe that you are correct in that it should also extend the life of your water filter system. I’m like you I’m still going to boil the water before I consume it. Great tip Blackie. Great idea's B;ackie. I made a millbank bag from old pair denim trouser legs. Woorks good thating big items out till I pass through the grayl.

You make things more clear because you keep your eye on the horizon ideas... for example, longevity and prefiltering.

Excellent suggestion Blackie, I normally use cotton cloth handkerchief as a pre-filter, but this is a better option!! I have 2 Grayl Geopress bottles and will buy (just bought) 2 of these pre-filter bags!!

The 24oz can be backflushed with an aldi 15oz tika masala glass bottle, 🤣. Fill the inner bottle to 1/4 full with purified water and put the glass bottle in and push. Untwist filter and push glass out from bottom and repeat steps. Do it 5-10 times. Easy.

I'm first! Great idea for my Grayl, thanks again for all you're wisdom.

Well, just another genius idea making the life out in the field healthier and saving money at the same time. By the way, you got a real decent looking pair of trousers, good thick quality and not the usual jeans stuff.

30 bucks to not have to carry gallons of water or expensive and fidgety PURIFICATION systems is well worth it to me even if I only get 2 trips out of it...I bring freeze dried meals with me and it's usually around $30 for lunch and dinner in one day for me and my girlfriend.

I have used mill bank bags for years for that exact purpose but they are getting really hard to find now days. I have one I purchased about 10 years ago and it looks like it will last for ever as long as you clean them after every use.

The pre-filter is essential and it's not obvious in the marketing. My other filters deal with sediment better.

Side note of water,like he said water is a NATURAL SOLVENT,to all those that buy boots every 2 years. Think about the type of boots your buying,if the sole is GLUED on like a pair of sneakers and you go romping through the woods and puddles and rain and so forth you can expect those GLUED on soles to leak and eventually fail. Welt designed boots rarely have those problems,I speak from EXPENSIVE EXPERIENCE.Irish setter work boots and the hunting boots are the same build,my work setters fell apart after 2 years of working in them. I got them for comfort and didn't wanna break in ANOTHER pair of Justin's.... BIG mistake over 300 bucks for the Irish setters to fail and fall apart in 2 years time. Failure points? Anywhere it was GLUED. So if you're in and around water hunting stop wasting your money on glued on soles, ALL rubber or Welt designed. They'll last longer than 2 years aside from rips tears and punctures. Just my opinion through observation.

Blackie, I don't know that soaking the bag is a good idea as you're coating the outside with dirty water and creating a capillary action on the outside to carry into the cup. Better I would have thought would be to fill the bag from the inside and let the soak work its way through. I have also seen people use epsom salts to settle turbidity in water, just a sprinkle on top and it acts like cold water on cowboy coffee.

I've used the Grayl for 3 years and not satisfied. People should do deep research on an overhyped product.
