It's impressive how average 50's vocal lines sound and how much Ken improved it and got it sitting perfectly in the mix. It is probably the best insight in the whole www you get watching the very top engineer mixing. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!

i only use high pass filters when i hear a problem that needs to be cleaned up, and i mix with subwoofers so if there is a problem, i feel it.

I end up coming here every 3 months or so as I progress my craft. I was floored the first time and still pick out great things every single time I watch. It's funny; every time I watch it, I think that I know my basics, but when I come back, I know one or two more concepts and understand that much more with that much more clarity every single time. If I wasn't so tight on money I'd spend it on your lessons, but I'm not (they are a steal, that's just saying more about my finances hahaha), so I get what I can where I can. Thanks for these free ones!

I got you. I have Logic Pro 9 but I think I'll be going back to Pro Tools since I'm more familiar with Pro Tools. I will also be purchasing some of your mixing tutorials. I have mixed some large Pro Tools projects before. I learned a lot from reading and trial and error. Never really watched a PRO do it. I learned a lot just by watching you mix "Down on me" thats one of my favorite records! The beat is amazing.

Hello Mr. Lewis. Truly awesome video. Spent two years at Full Sail to view what I just watched for free on youtube. Amazing. Quick question if I may... At 12:15 on "AD Lib 3" there seems to be bleed on the track perhaps from the cans 50 was using. Whats the approach on the bleed? Do you ignore it? Praise (embrace) it? Attempt to extinguish it? I guess it's the same question if drums are sneaking in whilst a guitarist is recording?

Do you think you could give a basic explanation of how you set up your sends? Currently I have one main reverb send that I use, with additional sends if necessary for drums (Minimal mainly for CPU reasons). Seems like you have several different sends, any reason for differing reverbs? Also how important is EQing your reverb sends? I tend to run into the muddying issue pretty often, so I EQ the verb alot but I feel like Im overdoing it and losing body/ambience. Thanks for these videos!!

***** ken I want to ask you something and need your honest opinion. Does summing mixers really work for giving a mix speration? Let's say you got everything on point in a mix engineering stand point, do you think a summing mixer will help out sonically or is it bullshit?
@AudioSchoolOnline
@AudioSchoolOnline 7 лет назад
i dont think summing mixers are bullshit, but its not a HUGE difference and its not the only important link for summing. good converters are important as well, and of course good monitoring,but its not a silver bullet, its just a slight improvement, and at my level any slight improvement i can get sonically is worth its weight in gold.

how should you treat the vocals if you did not use any compression going into tape?
@aftereffects
@aftereffects 11 лет назад
why do you use different plugins for the same effect e.g. compression, EQ and how can you possibly learn the interfaces of them all? At one point you were using the API 560, and then later you use a Q4, and then the Brainworx. Surely the API 560 can do the job of the others?
