All of these videos are GREAT MAN. THANKS KEN LEWIS. I learned that reverb isnt used as much as i think on pop vocals. thanks for going over autotune and chromatic scale etc, that was very insightful. The Pitch blender and eventide effects really gave it a nice sounding effect. Great work, now i like this song lol

I think the radio just wore it out like all songs nowadays. One more thing ken, is there anyway that i can emulate that effect using waves doubler? unfortunately i don't have an eventide plugin.

You make it seem so easy! As an student in audio I have to say that this is one of the best resources I've come across. It was very helpful to see an example of not only how you mixed the song, but also to see what a session for an actual, commercially successful song looks like. We hear all of these songs on the radio, and I often wonder about this part of the process. It's rare that we get to see an actual session, so this was so helpful. Thank you!

Really awesome video Ken. I appreciate you taking the time to put this together as it no doubt helped me with some general techniques related to compression and reverb. Just wondering though, at this stage what kind of interaction will you have with the producer of the track (if any)? Do you ever request changes to samples (like if a kick doesn't have enough low end or something)? Thanks again!

Ken I was surprised to see you didn't automate volume at all. I was hoping you could tell me when would you would do that and why didn't you need to on this track? Thanks a ton for these high quality videos, you are really offering something that is hard to find on RU-vid. I learned so much!
@zbox98
@zbox98 8 лет назад
Hey Ken, thanks for the response. That's really nice to hear considering some professionals have these incredibly detailed volume automations that must take hours and hours to create. Mike Senior in Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio seems to think that if you don't have these intricate automations on leads your mix won't stand next to other commercial mixes. Do you do anything else to create some dynamic range in the vocals, or are you able to get away with a static volume most of the time because you are working in hip hop? Or is this a technique you use for vocals in all genres? Thanks again, z
@zbox98
@zbox98 8 лет назад
Thanks for your answer! I knew you worked in different genres, that's why I asked if this is a technique that varied depending on the genre. Honestly your answer is a relief - I'm glad not everyone thinks dialing in automation super tediously is absolutely necessary.

Thats because he has all the audio routed to A5-6, or his "SSLmixbus", so the signal runs through the SSL and then back into tools. The audio for this video would have taken from the SSL before it when back into tools. That puts the master fader in protools after in the signal chain and also it explains why Ken can hear the changes and we can't. At least i assume that is the reason.

@shayeasy
@shayeasy 10 лет назад
yeah, loved this series but was surprised at the lack of discussion regarding the kicks and low-end, which is a pretty prominent part of the song and what i tend to have the most trouble with. he did mention a lesson on his website about compressing hip-hop kicks.. will be checking that out.
@smash461986
@smash461986 10 лет назад
shayeasy Sidechain multiband compression. Basically send the kick to a multiband compressor on the bass and have it duck the low end of the bass when the kick is played. Thus making room for the kick's transient to create that punch. Of course you can do the same thing with a normal compressor but it ducks the whole bass, which can create a pumping effect. Which is actually quite cool if done properly.
@ausermane5926

Ken, thank you so much for posting this series. This mix is fantastic. Very informative, please keep them coming! Just wondering what influences your decision to mix on the ssl vs itb. In my experience (w/ a midas venice) mixing through a console obscures some transient information and fine detail but provides a more engaging soundscape. This might not be right for all material however (and may also be a product of other variables - a/d ,etc). Was curious of your opinion, if you have done any a/b comparisons. Thanks!
@ausermane5926
@ausermane5926 9 лет назад
***** I definitely agree on all fronts. I just found the difference interesting (when a/b'ing off the d/a with good headphones). It is most apparent on material with busier, digitally synthesized percussive parts. Was just trying to confirm if it was unique to my setup or not, as the venice spec doesn't seem too far from the AWS. Also was curious if you have used the H3000 Factory alongside a hardware Eventide device or ST Crystalizer for that microshift thing, and if you have a preference.
@ausermane5926
@ausermane5926 9 лет назад
***** Yea the widening thing is preset 231 on the H3000. Most 3000s that are in studios are just permanently on 231 lol. It's great. It's just a +/- 9c pitch offset and 0/25ms delay offset. Crystalizer actually is pretty cool for this if you reduce the splice/delay to very short and set a small pitch offset in the tweak menu. But yea the hardware H3000 units have curtis chips and good analog stuff in the output stages. Even the wilder fx just sit really well with the source, nothing sounds bad on that machine. The newer ones are awesome as well. Just really inspirational boxes that are difficult to replicate using even crazy plugin chains bc of the extensive randomization. Good idea w/the octave delays, gotta try that!

And if so can you send me which ones in order so I could integrate it in my pro tools session. I would be so grateful thank you.

Hi Ken, I recall Dave Pensado announcing death of mono not too long ago :) Some albums are mixed using around 50 percent pan on non-centre parts and other albums go 100 percent and wider. Personally, I like 50 more & occasional sounds wider, the ones that don't play continuously.

Hi, Ken! Man, this is a great tutorial! Thank you!! I'm definitely gonna be checking other lessons @ ASO... I have one question: Why do you use the A7s? I mean, I'm sure you could afford a more expensive pair of monitors (I don't know, let's say the Event Opals...) Hi Ken, do you worry about mono compatibility at this point in time? The reason I ask is that whenever I mix and push stuff wide it doesn't sound too good in Mono. When I mix and don't push main parts too far out ie keeping them within 50% panning it sounds way better in Mono. Thanks in advance. Big thanks for posting your wisdom man.

@Chromaticz: I feel that many mixers are not too bothered with mono as their mixes are super wide during main parts, so there is no way they would sound great on mono as volume will change in some parts and make mix sound different.

***** thank you so much for that knowledge, it makes sense that the mixers job isn't to correct the singer, what do you use to tune 808's? I'm in school and learning on a toft studio atb and i have always had a passion for music as an artist now I'm transitioning into becoming a mix engineer, i love learning and practicing, i will probably be getting ur 10 min drills soon and beat makers one for the non musical ear ppl like me, i do use my midi keyboard a lil but i def need to learn notes. thanks for your response and keep these videos coming ken!
