Logan Blythe, a 15-year-old boy with Down syndrome, has wanted to become an Eagle Scout for years. He’s been working hard to earn the required merit badges and was planning his final project, when his family received an email from the Boy Scout district advancement committee saying that Logan had not followed the exact requirements to earn his badges.

I was a parent and Troop Scout leader at a summer camp where this boy was. His father was VERY bossy (think grown bully) and ensured that his clueless boy passed each event FAST at the merit badge stations that I encountered them and the boy learned NOTHING. Seriously, special needs people can still LEARN or at least try to learn. This father rocketed his son to the head of every line, made certain that his son received NO instructions at the events (I was also at) and finished before any other Scouts. When I suggested the father to give his a LITTLE more time to learn and enjoy the father made it CLEAR that special needs kids did not go by our standards and HE determined the standards and this was it! I'm sorry for the lad, but I agree with BSA on his son. This boy never learned anything.

An important detail is missing from your insightful post. The BSA ALLOWS Logan to pursue still his path to Eagle past the age of 18 because he is disabled. His dad simply did not need to rush the child as you have indicated he did at the camps because he doesn't have to worry about his son aging out. So, knowing that, the BSA is completely within its rights to demand Logan do it right, especially when they already are granting him extra time to achieve the rank of Eagle. Even after removing his merit badges, he still can earn them again on his own. My oldest son, and Eagle Scout and an assistant scoutmaster, has a girl in his troop who is autistic that is past the age of 18 getting her Eagle this year. They didn't rush her and she has earned every merit badge on her own.

A scout has to complete requirements as written there is no way around it. The rank of Eagle Scout is not for every scout it is for those few dedicated extraordinary scouts. With that said, the BSA guide to advancement clearly states once awarded an advancement can not be taken away from a scout.

Although people with disabilities should never be viewed as in any way "less" than others, it's absurd to suggest that they are always capable of the same activities. It's in no way a crime that this kid is unable to perform typical Boy Scout activities, but it is unreasonable to suggest or demand the summary redefinition of all that Scouting is, to fit the make-up of every single child in the population, whether due to disability or variable. The idea that all groups should be dictated to in this fashion is ridiculous.

I don't know the complete story, but he has requirements that are supposed to be easier than normal. Those requirements go to any form of down syndrome or autism, so anyone with those problems can complete them. It's the same to him as it is to other boys. He has requirements, he needs to do them. BSA is accepting of girls and boys of any kind joining, so no, they don't discriminate others based on personal problems. I'm a scout who comes from a Hispanic origin, and my troop consists of white boys and parents. I'm treated the same, so discrimination is out of the books. He may not have completed the requirements correctly, but suing the organization for discrimination? That's major bull. He's not the only scout with down syndrome, and he won't be the last. BSA takes advancement very seriously, regardless. Down syndrome or not. BSA is not at fault for suspending his work, that happens to scouts without down syndrome. You don't get everything handed to you, especially in scouting. He needs to find out what he needs to work on, get it done, and he's an eagle scout. BSA is not the "bad guys" for suspending work, even if it's a scout with down syndrome. That happens all the time, and you're saying people with down syndrome shouldn't be looked down upon, and neither should others who don't. If you really want this to be fair, then let him deal with the issues assigned to him.

This is something that you appeal to the district (my brother did just that) and if they refuse, you can appeal nationally. This isn’t something to sue over and this isn’t discriminatory. Only those who are Eagle Scouts should be able to comment on what is and isn’t discrimination in Eagle Scout process, because they’ve gone through it.

I myself have autism and A.D.H.D and I thought I could never earn my Eagle rank but I did. I however did not believe in doing the route to allow me to earn merit badges quickly, I chose to not take that path. I became an Eagle Scout, not by taking the easy route. Making the rank of Eagle, isn’t easy. It is not just handed down to you. An Eagle Scout rank is a hard rank to earn it’s made by hard effort. There are programs for those who have disabilities even in scouts, This is why you need to take all the resources and help you need, in order to be successful.

As a troop Senior Patrol Leader and council level volunteer myself, I must point out that specific permission from the national council MUST be given in order for a boy to use different requirements due to disabilities. As an Eagle Scout, it seems that the council is not saying he can’t be an eagle, only that he has to complete the requirements as they are written. I don’t really care what happens because the Boy Scouts is hardly worth the effort in most cases anymore. But as an eagle, you have to complete the requirements, if you cannot then you don’t get to join the club. The kid still has three years until he cannot get the award. The council and national organizations have both said he is still eligible for completion, he just has to do the work. He still has time to earn it. I’m sorry he can’t do it right away. That’s called life.
@Bodiddly2106
@Bodiddly2106 6 лет назад
Hugo Goerner it’s not that I’m saying that Logan is not worth it, I’m saying that the scouts is no longer the organization it was. It would be a great accomplishment for him to get his eagle. The point I was trying to make is that he still has three years to figure out how to accomplish that goal. It doesn’t have to involve suing the scouts. If you read the news story from the local news (KSL.com) the reply from both the local council and the national council have both said he is not disqualified. He just still has more work that needs to be done. If he wants the eagle, he will go do the work and his parents will help and support him in that.

Alex I absolutely agree. Requirements are set to make a standard. Standards are hard which is why we feel accomplished when we achieve them. Because life is harder for one person (life is suffering for everyone) doesn’t mean we lower standards. I was a Life Scout and a part of the order of the arrow (I feel like a nerd stating that lol) and I feel bad as an adult that I didn’t push for Eagle Scout. Unfortunately I felt that I “grew out of it,” before I could reach that last rank. Nationals set a standard and are asking this young man to meet it. Nothing wrong with that at all imo. Obviously it’s harder to accomplish things when you are at a disadvantage but how much more sweet that victory would be? I hope he sticks with it and becomes an Eagle Scout but he needs to do it the right way as defined by the national org.

Okay so as a pre-emptive reply before I've fully watched the video. If he is downs syndrome, then that would imply they change to the rules to accommodate that disability. You don't judge a fish on its ability to climb trees. And for the same reason, somebody who is challenged with some form of learning disability have a different curriculum to work on, and thus different working life, not a "well if a normal person can do this then you must do it too." Be the best you personally can be, not obtain some set bar that you physically cannot achieve, even if its not your fault.

I know that the BSA has programs for scouts with disabilities, but I am not really sure how it works. We had a scout who coulnd't swim and was deathly afraid of learning how to. Guess what? he had to take lessons and pass the test just like everyone else, in order to advance! And, he did it, what a great accomplishment for him! He was not special needs though. Can a boy with a 4 year old mentality really fulfull the requirements for 13 ESRequired MBs. and then another 9? I don't know why dont you try it on your 4 yr old? However, I hope they develop something for those with a lower IQ, I know they do with scouts with physical disabilities.

the decision is the correct one, but they could have definitely handled the messaging and communication better. yes, the motto is doing your best, but certain achievements are earned with set criteria. there is no discounting or short cuts for anyone. earning merit badges and ultimately eagle scout is no walk in the park, and we shouldn't turn a blind eye for anyone, as it would only be fair for the rest of the scouts. imagine they had this "special" criteria for doctors/med school, policemen, teachers, etc?

I empathise greatly with this video but one comment and one observation come to mind.. If you give badges a way that represent having accomplished some task but make an exception to certain individuals for whatever reason it completely removed the value of that badge. You don't give a medical license to somebody who ALMOST had what it took. One thing is giving it to this poor child but know they have it, to take them away is double as cruel.. They could havegiven the little guy SPECIAL badges for BIENg the hardest worker, they most enthusiastic scout or what have you. But to to give what has not been warned only to take it back is pretty clueless. The boy scouts has been infected with social justice vitrol since it started allowing openly gay scout masters and now girls.. Takes away the whole point of the boyscout existence.. It's the boyscouts of America, not the everybody scouts, the inclusivity scout or the gayscouts of the world.. Second... Any this is not and attack! But the majority of mothers in this video look like they are in their mid to late 30's. I wonder if this has anything to do with sweet kids being born with downs syndrome..?

See I would agree with you if you weren't talking about somebody who is just slacking have no handicap can't do it but when you deny somebody's credibility up how hard they work and how good they do for their disability and how amazing they are for what they do despite their disability then there's something wrong with that that shouldn't even be anything truthful I'm all for not giving out hand out trophies but this is not one of those cases this kid is amazing and he's giving his hundred percent when there's a lot of people out there with no disability who have no drive at all he does better than most people without a disability so I have to disagree with you

I don't disagree with everything that you said but I disagree with that part not about handing it to somebody who didn't deserve it it's about handing it to somebody who has a disability doesn't let it be a good excuse me try his best if he doesn't deserve that then no one does because he's giving his best like everybody else that runs it it's hard work isn't good enough then giving your best isn't how you get it succeeding is it how you get it be more about popularity because as far as I'm concerned if you can't get it and you do your best and you have a handicap then by all means did the people should the people because his handicap is proven but he has more dry than anyone there

The way this story reads please note Logan was 15 years old... to accomplish Eagle at this young an age is even a feet for very accomplished boys... so what went wrong? Logan has until he turns 18 to age out. Feigned righteousness on Mr. Beck.

Can you think of a crueler thing to do to someone with a four year old cognitive ability, giving them hard earned badges and taking them back. For this kid who most likely will need live in care for life and will probably never even leave his own town, at the local level should make him an Eagle Scout regardless, giving him the recognition and honor that goes with the title. All who supported him over the years, His friends, Troop master, and town knows what he did.

That actually pisses me off. The National BSA Counsel should not have the right to take away the merit badges of individuals. This is targeting and harassment.

🏆 ~ Ummm, this absolutely IS a participation trophy. Quite ironic out the anti-participation trophy group decides the rules should be the exact opposite when it fits their wants and their narrative. A preservation trophy is given to those who show up and do their best, aka “participating“, but can’t quite be the best.

So the BSA let him join, awarded him the badges, led him to believe he was a candidate for Eagle, and then said "Oops. Yoink!" and took it all away? Now that's an outfit with real character!

Cro Minion Thats not what happened at all. They dont make acceptations for Eagle requirements, i had my project rejected twice you change it and come back. Thats the process, hes only 15 he has 2+ years to finish

My initial comment was made in anger, so it was unduly harsh. I have read more on the subject and I do understand why the BSA made the decision they did. I also understand the spirit in which the Scouts awarded him his badges, by giving him some leeway on meeting the requirements. However, perhaps that's not the best way to go about things. I can only say now that I'm still sorry things worked out the way they did for this kid, but I was wrong to place so much blame on the Scouts. I think it was a situation where they were trying to be nice and include this kid and it went a bit further than anyone expected.

Cro Minion Yah its just sad because even if he gets it there will be an asterisk due to the lawsuit about it. If that was my kid id do absolutely anything within my power to avoid the lawsuit because that kind of taints it. I mean end of the day its a patch you can buy for $5, the point is without question i earned it. Point is the boy scouts teach you there is a standard, no matter what you must meet that standard or accept failure. It may sound cruel but its a great way for kids especially boys to realize its not the critic who matters. At some point it becomes you must get up and accomplish something or accept you cant and move on, but if you do thats your decision no one else’s.

"I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is." -Sister J. Chittister

SCOUTING SUCKS! SCOUTING IS FOR LOSERS! It ruined my childhood, especially when my mother FORCED me to join and wouldn't let me go out for Little League! My Scoutmaster was a pervert who ended up getting caught and committed suicide before going to trial after his third offense! I testified against him, but the council swept it under the rug and me with it, denying me MY Eagle Board of Review in the process! I've since made up for it. There was a memorial in my hometown with this guy on it. I got it removed!
