In this excerpt from Stomping Grounds Episode 7, featuring boating culture in Coastal Maine, viewers learn about the origins of "down-east style" boats and yachts, and the history of the Hinckley Yacht Company. It's easy to see how commercial lobster boats inspired the downeast style of many private motor yachts built in Maine and throughout New England. Sometimes even referred to as "lobster yachts", these downeast yachts have a low-profile with a raised v-shaped bow and long sheerlines reminiscent of their work boat ancestors but with a more refined yacht-like elegance. One of America's oldest boat builders, Hinckley Yachts, epitomizes this style of yacht perhaps more than any other builder. The company has deep roots in the area going back to 1928 when Henry Hinckley founded the Manset Boatyard in Southwest Harbor, Maine and began servicing lobster boats and private yachts for residents of Mount Desert Island. In 1933, Henry built his first boat, Ruthyeolyn, a 36-foot fisherman with beautiful lines that are surprisingly familiar and still look the part even today.
The boat builder now constructs around 50 boats a year, working closely with owners to craft the vessel of their dreams including a personal training program for each owner when the vessel is delivered. The name Hinckley has also become synonymous with the entire picnic boat yacht class - a style of vessel the brand helped created that it has been carefully refining for decades. Picnic boats are downeast-style open air express yachts designed primarily for relaxing and entertaining with spacious open decks, comfortable seating and superior visibility, providing passengers a true sense of connection to the environment.
Hinckley has also perfected their popular jet propulsion system for picnic boats utilizing water jet drives without an external propeller, allowing the yachts to have very shallow water capability as well as providing great performance, handling and drive quality. Signature teak woodworking accents are Hinckley hallmarks. In addition to picnic boats, Hinckley has mastered the art of constructing private motor yachts ideal for coastal cruising, perhaps most notably on their Talaria line. With epoxy-infused carbon fiber hulls and intricate woodworking these yachts represent the pinnacle of American yachting.
In recent years the builder has also added outboard-powered vessels to their lineup, including center console and pilothouse versions. The attention to detail and dedication to quality that goes into building these yachts exemplifies the fine craftsmanship and revered work ethic of Maine boat builders. Lobstering is a beloved Maine pastime that got its start with local fishing families in the late 1700’s and the fishery began being harvested commercially in the mid 1800’s. Most lobster fishing businesses remain family-run.
