Wow. The Open Source Scan Converter Pro by Marqs is an IMPRESSIVE scaler, line multiplier and decimater. With inputs for Scart, VGA, component AND… HDMI! Between the 3 analog inputs, there’s options to input RGBs, RGsB, RGBHV and YPbPr. All inputs will accept common video resolutions from 240p and up to 1080p. HDMI or extra AV out addon board can output 15KHz 240p and 480i, amongst higher resolutions. The OSSC Pro complies with the Aspect Ratio Police by outputting a windowed 16:9, OR full 4:3 with vertical stretching.
The optional analog output board can deliver RGBs and RGBHV, so with the correct cable, there won’t be any need to convert digital to analog, or combine sync, making it completely plug and play. Its many features don’t stop there, as it can pass through the source resolution AND move the video’s window like an external image shifter. I could go on and on, but the watch OSSC Pro review and you'll see why it’s my favourite dowsncaler over the RetroTink 5x Pro, Dexx, Corio2 tvOne 750, GBS Control, and Extron Super Emotia, amongst others.
Feedback from Marqs is listed below which better explains the Aspect Ratio matching/mismatching ie WS resolutions, and size/position adjustments:
WS output resolutions. These are for widescreen CRTs and should be treated separate from source aspect ratio. The reason why 16:9 content is scaled to fullscreen only in this mode is because then source and output aspect ratios match. In non-WS SDTV/EDTV output modes ie. intended for 4:3 CRTs, 16:9 is letterboxed to honor source aspect ratio. "Aspect ratio" setting can be used to override source aspect ratio if needed
Also, another way to adjust size/position is in Output opt: adv disp timing. Adjustments will then applies regardless of source.
Thanks Marqs!
Scenarios tested:
Picture adjustments for source resolution passthrough
Downscaling 480p to 240p to use light guns on the XBox
Downscaling 2D and 3D games
3DO 240p restoration from 480i
Stretching the PSP video output
Evercade VS 1080p downscaling
And much more!

Now, can it get a baseband video output for composite? I'm in a fringe scenario where I have to run through an RF modulator to get video to my tube (yeah, American tubes before the mid-80s were like that. No internal caption decoding, UHF caps out at channel 83 and aerial connectors only), and most every modulator does composite video.

@MarcoRetro316 I see. I wonder if the retrotink 5x or pixel fx morph 4k have this ability. I'm currently on a mission to find the perfect "new" 720p monitor. I recently purchased a 24" vizio the model is vhd24m-0810. It's a tv but works great for monitor use. 10ms input lag in gaming mode. There are no longer 720p monitors but plenty of tv's. However, the panels are truly 768p. Nintendo switch looks real nice on it when it's outputting 720p. Better than my 4k monitor. But the tv is still scaling up to 768p. I'm trying to find a way to get a pixel perfect image. This tv is real nice. It was just released last week. It's available through Walmart online. Let me know if you have any ideas. And thanks for the response 👍

Very cool to see another strong contender. I'm hoping one of these devices will eventually be able to fix the sync problems on monitors like the Ikegami HTM line. Shankmods recently created a sync cleaner that fixes flagging. I’ll see if I can leave a link in a separate comment in case RU-vid eats the link. Do you mean how well it’ll accept mod resolution 24KHz (384p) to output 240p? And Mortal Kombat at 54Hz? Apparently the original OSSC accepts 24KHz but has limited output given its a line multiplier. Not sure if the Pro’s scaler mode offers different output resolutions for this input

I’ve been following your downscaling series with great interest. It’s a freaking jungle. I still haven’t made my decision. In my setup I have CRTs only. BVM 20F1E for 4:3 content (240 and 480i) and a BVM D24 for 16:9 content going all the way up to 1080i. My main focus would be to downscale 480p and 720p content to 240p with as little input lag as possible. It should also be pretty simple. Would you say OSSC Pro is the way to go? It’s quite expensive though :-(
@MarcoRetro316
@MarcoRetro316 2 месяца назад
Thanks for sticking with me! You’ve got 2 of the best monitors on hand. If lowest lag and 720/480 to 240p are your 2 biggest priorities, either the OSSC Pro or RetroTink 5X will suit. The catch with the Tink5x is you’ll need a transcoder on the input and output. As for the OSSC Pro, I’m not sure I’m meant to share, but lagless 720p to 240p downscaling using the Line Multiplier mode will be coming soon in a firmware update. Downscaling to 480i will only be done using Scaler mode and therefore about 1.2 frames of lag, but if you only want to output 240p then it’s not a factor for your setup. Then with the Pro, add the analog output and you’re all set. But yes both aren’t cheap at approx $350USD, but that’s the price for a lagless scaler with those input resolutions

@tranceenergy3121 Thank you and I’m flattered, though I consider myself a nerd that’s filling in the gaps from the greats like Fudoh. You dodged a bullet with the Emotia! Grundig, Siemens and Blaupunkt share chassis models so you might be able to lookup and see if an addon exists. But don’t be fooled if the plastic on the back has the cutout for a VGA connector, as some non-100Hz Loewe’s also have a cutout even if they can’t take the addon card

 @MarcoRetro316 Yes keep on going with your great video ;) About the grundid i get the service manual and there is a simple revision of this TV that have the vga expension board (labeled 29305-160.35). The only difference is the /PIP in the reference. There is even the schematic of the VGA board in the service manual and it's very basic. Even i could make a working pcb for this that could be validate by a friend (electronic engineer). I am not sure however that the firmware of this TV would handle the right input switching, as it's not impossible only the /PIP version could, so it could be a dead end. A shame though, it look like a nice little 29' set that could be perfect for 480p.
@MarcoRetro316
@MarcoRetro316 3 месяца назад
That’s great you were able to find the schematic. The Loewe VGA board is also fairly simple and AFAIK needs activation in the service menu. Hopefully it’s a similar process for the Grundig. It could essentially be a massive VGA monitor if you’re able to input and display native 31KHz

@@MarcoRetro316 I haven't updated my 5X in a while but 480i downscale isn't as nice as the OSSC Pro or GBS-C Don't have an RT4K Would love to see a comparison 😁

Unfortunately there’s hurdles to jump if the CRT doesn’t accept RGB and that’s about the only time I’d recommend the Extron Emotia. Otherwise I’ve seen a cheap Shinybow RGB to S-video transcoder, but will it accept 240p is a whole other question

Anyone else find it comical the amount of tech required to emulate old tech?

I guess it depends on the perspective on how bad one wants a feature-packed downscaler. If you want an all-in unit then it’s fantastic, but if it’s for a casual downscale then yes, build a GBS control for 240p output for around $50, or buy an even cheaper generic HDMI scaler for 480i output

What are the lag numbers for scaling 1080p to 1080i or 720p to 1080i? I ask because I'd like to get the OSSC PRO primarily for my 16:9 Panasonic HD CRT that can only do 1080i for HD resolutions. No 720p but no lag and light gun games like Time Crisis 2 with a Gcon2 work great. Great video and would love to see more.

I pulled out the lag gear to test just now. In adaptive liner multiplier mode, 1080p to 1080i is 16msec (1 frame) and there’s a bit of overscan that’s hard to pull in. I presume it’s the interlacing that’s costing 1 frame. For scaler mode, 1080p input to 1080i output is 18msec which gives you more picture control adjustments. 720p input doesn’t have an option to output 1080i in line multiplier, otherwise in scaler mode 720p to 1080i is also 18msec but there’s sync ‘flagging’ and the full flashing white box for the time sleuth is distorted and hard to pull in with picture adjustments. So you’re best to use Scaler mode 1080p to 1080i with 1 frame of lag. Happy to test other resolutions if needed

@@MarcoRetro316 thank you so much. If anything I would love to see you test everything that can scale to 1080i to find out what is the best and make it the Midscale chronicles lol. Other than that how is scaling 480i to 1080i mainly for PS2 games?

@@zombiekilldemon Bahaha the Midscaling Chronicles. Having the L5 series PVM, being capable of direct 1080i, has always stopped me from getting into consumer HDCRT’s, but if I can find the smallest possible that won’t be a burden on space then I’d love to delve into it more. Just checked Scaler Mode 480i to 1080i is 19msec. Adaptive Line Multiple mode is weird, selecting 480i to be processed as 1080i, the 14L5 shows it as 480p in the OSD and it’s definitely progressive so not sure what’s going on there
