The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) provides a variety of scholarships for physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs). Most commonly, providers are given $25,000 tax free repayment toward their student loans every year, usually for a 2 year commitment. To earn this stipend, the provider must commit to a 2 year contract in a NHSC designated clinic, usually taking care of under-served populations. This is very noble work and a great option for those who want to get some help repaying their student loans, however, it's not all sunshine and roses. Being a service corps provider is HARD. In this video, Boris Temkin, PA-C and Elijah C., PA-S1 discuss some of the downsides of being a NHSC scholar.

Would you say your military service/experience made you better at dealing with stress? Like the stress of PA school or being a healthcare provider?

Absolutely. I will say that my service was very chill compared to some people. I was never deployed and never went to a war zone or even on a ship. But military is military and everyone deals with a lot of stressful situations, especially lower enlisted. So after that post bacc and PA school didn’t seem too bad. It actually made it hard to relate to my classmates who complained about everything and treated any little issue as catastrophic, so after a while I just kept to myself and got through the program.
