I know the actress is going through hard times here, but I love that vase drop. And Mary's calm reaction of "I do hope that was a prop" xD She's got her granny's coolness for sure!
This is my favourite scene of the movie. Plus I sometimes love seeing how films are made anyway. Like seeing the cameras being set up, particularly how they handle film negatives when preparing to shoot, studio lights being set up, film clapperboards and of course voice dubbings.
I didn't think of it when I first saw this scene, but it reminds me of a scene from the movie "Singin' In the Rain" in which an actress is pretending to sing then a curtain goes up and the audience can see it's really Debbie Reynolds singing.
I wonder if that's where they got their inspiration from. This is my first time watching the scene and Singing in the Rain is what I thought of immediately.
I saw Hannibal just few months ago and loved him as Will . But here I didn't recognize him until half the movie was over .. the glasses and curly hair made a lot of difference .
Those things do happen sometimes: someone such as Lady Mary who isn't trying to be in show business, isn't looking for it, but is in the right place and at the right--- and they're discovered.
@@zyxw2024 OK, I will. It happened to me. A director saw me in my workplace and wanted me to be in a stage production. I had other things going on and declined.
The funniest thing here is revealed in interview shots of Michelle. In real life, she has a bit of a cockney accent, not the refined lady accent. In fact its the woman playing Edith who speaks in her natural manner. Michelle is in fact a wonderful voice actor.
Younger audiences don't realize how many careers were destroyed by the introduction of sound to moving pictures. Actors who were huge stars during the silent picture era, either left the film industry because they feared their voices or accents wouldn't be up to the challenge, or their careers declined because their voices weren't suitable enough for the studios. One has to wonder, if Valentino hadn't died before making a talking picture, did he have a voice that would have made it during the transition or would his career fallen away. Even producers, directors, and cinematographers lost their careers when the studios introduced sound.
The more “Hollywood beautiful”, by general American/english audience expectations actress, can’t act to save her life, but she’s perfect & presentable on screen. The more “plain” actress acts flawlessly, but since she’s not as “traditionally” attractive, they don’t think audiences will be as impressed with her, so they do a singing in the rain type voice dubbing, where the “pretty” one plays the “pretty” girl character, while the “plain” one with actual talent voices her.
