Imelda Staunton acted her butt off in this scene! So emotional! And Penelope Wilton fabulous as always!

Tha fact that the Dowager as brilliantly savvy, wasnt able to guess lucy was her daughter, really shows how baffled she was at the decision of leaving everything nto the maid. On the contrary, Isobel observed and then deducted, she learned from the best indeed! What an amazing scene this was. I really miss the Crawleys and Downton.

Isobel is by far the most down-to-earth of the Crawleys and in her own way has the biggest heart. And now that she's known Violet for many years, she can best advise Lady Bagshaw on how to deal with her.

The best members of the family, with Sybil as the exception, are those who married into it or became part of it because of marriage. Sybil, Tom, Matthew and Isobel are the best of them. Bertie is also very kind and openminded. Cora and Violet have their kind moments, so do Robert Mary and Edith. But Sybil Tom Matthew Isobel and Bertie outdo them all in the kindness department. If we count Rose and Atticus, they are both sweethearts as well. But the main crawley fam members, as in those born with the name, tend to be less sympathic. Again, Sybil being the exception.

I'm here after watching the 2nd Downton movie. (Spilers ahead): So glad to see their official marriage. Tom deserved a new love. Sybbie on the other hand: her story may have started with tragedy but ended so beautifully, with an awesome stepmother & a baby sister🥰🥰🥰

Yes, I was very glad for Tom and that Lucy was definitely deserving of his love. I always thought he was rather stupid with women except for Lady Sybil, being manipulated by that horrid maid then being pushed around by that incredibly rude school teacher. At last, a woman that deserved him and vice versa.

@@riverrojas2036 I just meant that the "ward thing" is definitely not over yet. It still would have been an issue in the 30's, maybe not anymore after WW2. To me, adoption is more logical. Lucy is an adult, the only heiress of an old widowed lady, who is safe in her marriage. Marigold is still a child, her future is at stake.

Lady Mary’s strange hairstyle, it’s so Star Trekkie, but Downton Abbey, I can see it still being a popular watch in 100 years time. It’s so enjoyable and it has an element of binge watching about it with great storylines etc. I can’t understand why Downton Abbey: A New Era has been trashed by critics, I thought it was far better than Downton Abbey: The Movie

Lady Mary's hairstyle is what was fashion-forward at the time. Certainly not everyone would have had their hair like this; what Lucy's wearing was much more common. But that's as it should be: it's for Mary to be fashionable, and for a maid to wear what's "common".

I'm just grateful we live in a more tolerant society. While people certainly get hurt there is no more stigma with out of wedlock children or unmarried women who are pregnant. So thankful those times are behind us. I know there are still some religious nuts out there but as a society I'm glad we have moved on.
@RobinPM86

As one of those "religious nuts" I wish we as a society had not "moved on". Now the stigma is gone, we see more teen mothers who have no clue how to BE mothers, more children without fathers in their lives, more children who are not taught how to become caring, responsible adults.

@rowanaforrest9792
@rowanaforrest9792 2 года назад
I think Mary needs Tom as her brother, plus they never felt romantic toward each other. Tom and Lucy are a great match. I don't know why people assume Mary isn't happy with Henry. He's not able to be in the movies much because the actor is unavailable, but within the show there's been no hint of any unhappiness between them (unless there is in the second movie, which I've not seen yet but am eager to see).
@rajarshighosh1857
@rajarshighosh1857 2 года назад
Mary and Tom have a very good relationship. Preposterous to pair them up romantically. Years of their sibling like camaraderie should not be muddied with love and romance, it doesn't suit them at all. People love them as the brother and sister they are. Mary is not at all unhappy in her marriage. She seems really content at the end of the first movie and in the second, she shows restraint with the director showing how much she loves Henry. It's unfortunate Goode can't be much in the movies, but that's because he is a busy actor. If there is a third movie, i am hoping he gets to be in it.

@@brendadean570 Henry doesn’t appear in the second movie, and will most probably not appear if they make a third. Forgetting the funeral, it’s far stranger that he wouldn’t be there for Tom’s wedding. Tom was his business partner and good friend, and had been Henry’s best man. Lady Sybil died due to eclampsia (not brought about by Tom); His political leanings when he was a chauffeur attracted Sybil to him and they came together in the spirit of equality and progressiveness; When he went to America he actually prospered with his brother and came back to offer his child back her social/familial inheritance by being with her English family.
