There’s a beaver near me. They’re incredible, creating lots of ponds and a fantastic wealth of new plants, insects, fish etc

they are good to a certain degree my friend, look at wood buffalo national park in Canada. if they are simply left alone for generations those "ponds" will connect into a swamp land it is okay in safe areas but near people it is dangerous of flash floods and property damage. not saying they are the devil i love beavers i am Canadian so i am by law obligated to loving them. just good to be informed on the fact they can be a pain for property owners and farmers they cut down trees in the area they live has the dam grows in size so it is good to just keep an open mind to how much property damage they can cause. other from that they are amazing creatures they are the only one that can change an ecosystem to suit their needs like humans this is why we tend to butt heads with the little engineers.

Landowners have too much power in Scotland. If the species is protected, the punishments should fit the crime.
@MegaSkiboy

This is awful. Humans have destroyed so much of the wilderness on this island. Not only is it fair but it's our responsibility to reintroduce and maintain species that are native to this land. Can't believe a person would willfully shoot a beaver knowing how few there are in this country.

Would a good solution be to extend the protected status so that landowners can't kill them legally? Or at least force landowners to pursue other avenues before being allowed to kill them outright?

I thought the same. Why give land owners to option?

if they are introduced the same organization should be dealing with the problems that come with introducing an invasive species to your back yard. they are still rodents they are hard to trap and control so this is the outcome that will come with it. best way to deal with them in my opinion is the Canadian way generally leave them alone unless it is on private property or roads that they can flood etc. they are good for the environment but also need a lot of watching over or they will become a problem in no time they can cut a forest quicker than people will give them credit for the dams keep growing until they create a swamp. they are the bane of farmers and landowners to be honest because of how much property damage they can do.

@@denistardif6650 Invasive??? Aren't they native Eurasian beavers and not North American beavers?
@denistardif6650
@denistardif6650 Год назад
@@saichung6246 euro asian beavers are native to Europe and they are believed to be extinct in the 16th century those are American beavers and they are invasive. i am Canadian beavers are a pest they are rodents they are great for the environment but you can do a quick google search and it will tell you beavers are a invasive species in southern America and most of the world even in Canada they literally build lakes were roads should be also they don't just build dams they also build underwater canals that bring more water to their dams they hydrate one spot but they also dry out others to make their dams what they are doing in Scotland his a plus from what i read so i would not consider that invasive but beavers are considered a invasive species they have no natural predators even here in Canada they can thrive in any season and climate has long they have a water source to build a damn and defend them and once they move in somewhere they are nearly impossible to get rid of so yhea definition of a invasive species.

@jemimallah in Canada a person can have 1000 acres of land and not farm on it..... making him a landowner not a farmer for example people who have big lands of lumber are not considered farmers they are considered landowners for example my grand father was a dairy farmer he sold the cows and kept the land grew trees and sold the lumber he has 700 acres he hasn't farmed in over 40 years.... same goes for people who make maple syrup they are not called farmers they own wood lands so they are called landowners did you think before righting this comment?

Let's be clear on what we mean when we say "we" - fat cat millionaire landowners. The 1%. A thoroughbred race of bloodthirsty psychopaths who can and will destroy anything that gets in the way of them making money. Let's not tar the 99% of people who want to live simple lives in harmony with nature with the same brush.
@allandavies1642

I presume landonwers would have been informed prior to the introduction of the beaver. The most likely cause would be poachers looking for a different kind prey to hunt. But as you suggest, given how much of our natural woodland has been lost since the beaver was native to these lands this was invariable going to happen, most especially as beavers encroached on lands further afield beyond where they were released. However that may be, I fully agree, with out the resource of extensive woodlands ,this was a selfish and stupid idea.

Killing a beaver in the UK should be punishable by a prison sentence. We need these incredible creatures to repair the damage done by humans over the last 500 years. Killing them is criminal. If anyone has beavers on their land causing a problem, they can solve it with one phone call to the Beaver Trust who help.

The native beavers in Britain were driven extinct. The same species was not driven to extinction in Europe, although it probably came pretty close. The beavers that have been brought to Britain are from that same species.

What don't you people need clear water for anything ? Give it to other countries with desert , they need them if you don't. Disappointing you don't want to protect them and recognize what their work is important to nature , very bad of the Scotland government and people who will just kill then w/o understanding and trying to adjust and work with them sorry but i have to unsubscribe.

Why were they introduced in the first place? You had an ecology for years that existed without them. If a species has been extinct in that environment for decades then there are bound to be repercussions if you reintroduced them.
@allandavies1642
@allandavies1642 3 года назад

@malcolm1148
@malcolm1148 3 года назад
Not really. Species that are native to UK and extinct here have a worse effect on the environment not being there. Lynx and Wolves gone mean much of the Highlands are essentially grassy deserts due to deer population explosion. The lack of beavers, bison and moose mean that insect, fish and bird populations have taken a hit, a few hundred years is nothing to an ecosystem if all these animals are reintroduced then wildlife here will benefit
@hailgiratinathetruegod7564
@hailgiratinathetruegod7564 3 года назад
Beavers are a perfect example for a keystone species. A single species that drasticly effects the eccosystem. Beaver reinterdructions worldwide showed that they increase the biodevsity for smal fish, insects and birds in particular. The eccology in britain was not function correctly with the the extinction of such spieces. The same is with predetors. The scotish Highland turned in to a green desert. With many species like birds and squrril being pretty much extinct, since the extrem overpopulation and over grasing of deer destoried the eccosystem.
