He's one of those actors who you might kind of recognize now (in spite of 15 feature film credits already), but will soon be hard to avoid with Star Wars, The Revenant (from this year's Oscar winning director and Leo DiCaprio) and a hot Sundance movie (Brooklyn) on the way. He is one of the three stars of the remarkable Ex Machina. He talks about the film (with some spoilers), his work, and his perspective on a life in film with David Poland.
Shot in Los Angeles, April 2015

I like this kind of interview where the actor gives u breakdown of the movie and his point of view. His character n what he can do better. Basically instead of just promoting the film, this lets u know actor's opinion and let the viewers see their intellect and their views.

I think he's one of the better actors of his generation. His performance in Ex Machina is flawless, especially the way he interacts with Ava, how his approach and behavior change with each session. And all that in a very subtle, brilliant way. I also liked him in About Time, I think he brings something fresh, a truthfulness in his approach of the characters, without mannerisms and tropes you see with a lot of his peers. And he seems like a nice guy and that was a great interview.

This movie caught me by surprise! It is an independent film so, of course and unfortunately didn't get much exposure. I was blown away by the complexities of the characters as well as the plot! This is a deep, astonishingly beautifully set, and dark, film. This interview is really great because the interviewer asks really great questions which lead Domhnall into talking about acting out the character, eventually, particularly, Caleb from Ex Machina. Domhnall talks about the experience of portraying the complexities of this character. About 25 mins into the interview, we hear Domhnall talk about, going over in his mind, the many ways he could have possibly revealed other layers/interpretations of Caleb. He concludes that ultimately he felt Caleb needed to be vulnerable even though he struggled with the level of vulnerability he wanted to portray. The writer-director Alex Garland, who I have, confessedly, never heard of, created such a fantastic plot that kept me constantly trying to analyze what the characters motives were. I don't usually partake in suspenseful entertainment rides, but I LOVE sic-fi movies so I thought I would check it out on Amazon Prime. I have no regrets in doing so and, in fact, find myself still trying to interpret this movie and won't forget feeling haunted by it as the credits began to roll.

Whelp, I literally just watched this entire thing. Good job, Domhnall Gleeson, I just killed forty minutes of my day listening to you talk about a movie! God, I love him. He's a really good actor. Ex Machina was fucking amazing, and I'll never recover. On another note, I think it's interesting the way he sort of sides with Caleb. His opinions are very much Caleb's opinions. Even his view of Ava's character is a bit like Caleb. He believes in her humanity in a more sincere way than I did after watching the movie.

*I wish the "razor blade scene" would have been discussed.* As I understand that Alex Garland has stated that we don't know if Caleb is a robot or not; however, I never thought he was anything other than Caleb ("a human programmer"). Now the scene works as it illustrates that the wheels are coming off for Caleb (he is becoming unhinged); with Caleb having no family, no love interests, he is seduced and pulled in tightly, so the crazy response is relatable (for his character); but I would never have thought his motivation was a result of his not knowing whether he his human or not.
@qncsc
@qncsc 9 лет назад
hobonlace i appreciate the response. i am not sure about your ideas; it certainly is possible. however Caleb does act kind of crazy (independent of the cutting): blood smear, smashes the glass, the time he spends on manipulating the cut, his jaw. but .. showing fragility has its own problems as the AI (of some unknown, perhaps spectacular intelligence) may find that quality abhorrent; or useful to the AIs means. also, if communicating to the AI, smashing the mirror is a gamble as that is fraught with problems -- as the AI may find that physicality (form of comm) as too emotional, too threatening, too alien. in thinking how the AI may interpret "safety" would be interesting; especially how in this world there seems to be a constant trade-off between liberty and safety. some prize safety (and the loss of liberty, for themselves and others) above all else. etc...
@oddballsok
@oddballsok 8 лет назад
+Marcus Aurelius Just this week I saw the movie on HBO tv..and I too appeared to be the only one bothered about the cutting scene (and blue hue over his face).Could't find anyone commenting on it over RU-vid or disqus channels. Apart from you 2 guys here. BUT, elsewhere , on many different youtube spots I came to the conclusion that Caleb is the next AI robot to have been tested. Think eve and adam, think old testament cruel God, think garden of Eden (but no snake..or wait, Kyoko ? Kyoko shows/seduces Caleb with her skin peeling too,,,and Kyoko seduces Ava "who are you ?" too). Think many other or misformed humans walking the earth outside Eden made by other gods(!) (the masks on the wall). Check hebrew names Caleb and Nathan. Here is an extra answer to an often repeated riddle; Why couldn't Nathan have a simple shut down button on his robots ? remote controlled ? That would go against the thought of self functioning AI as if to be independent operating humans. But still, there is something: A punch on the chin ! Like a human KO; Kyoko gets her lower jaw knocked out = shut down (see how she slowly sinks down) and a robot with a jaw kicked out, normally should not mean anything. But here it does. Hence, Nathan WANTED to hit Ava on her face/jaw with the steel bar, but she defends herself with the arm. Arm kaputt. Nathan realises he can pull her now back in the room. Also Caleb gets PUNCHED on the chin as Nathan can't allow the risk of Caleb be running away like Ava too. And Caleb in the arm cutting scene (note the cheap sirup blood, no hair on arm, clean skin, same texture skin as ava) ? He/it was fucked'' in the head, malfunction, cutting skin, smearing blood on mirror, punching mirror (his own face)...next day Nathan mentions it casually, blasé;. So what happened ? Nathan saw it. and restarts Caleb (nighttime = recharge time..on his 2 scars on his back), fixes some programlines, and restarts the next morning: Not entirely rebooted (he knows Ava and nathan) but he feels his wrist and stiff ? fingers (but , hey, NO thick bandage as humans WOULD have). Also Ava mentions he was away a whole day and morning....why ? BECAUSE Caleb robot was getting repaired by Nathan. You are right that Kyoko saw Caleb cutting his arm via screen from Nathan s room.

+ODDBALL SOK i appreciate the response. wow 9 months ago, when i posted that comment. i remember at that time, i was so captivated by EM, i made dozens and dozens of comments. at the time, i was thinking i must be one of the experts on this film, on this planet, as i had consumed so much material about it. i think what bothered you, or was noticeable was the same for me: the cut with the blade, kyoko jaw hit, syrupy blood. (i did not notice the blue hue, also the names never resonated; and not until i saw all the alexgarland interviews, did i know about scars on Caleb's back.) what i have seen somewhat but never really thought about too much was the use of the names (as you are pointing out) and how that may give direction to the characters. i should do that at some point. i think the film excellent; however, it is incomplete. as an example, alexgarland was challenged on the keys for the doors and how it was antiquated and causes problems. i think there are some issues with the film, as with any; it is excellent in so many ways; it does have some problems that i think do not pass muster. i never bought into the whole "Caleb as robot" thing. i know alexgarland felt that there was an allusion to that, per interviews; actually, i would be disappointed if that is exactly what he had in mind. i just cannot see the point of the whole movie if Caleb is a more advanced form of robot. everything is pointing to Nathan pushing the boundaries of robotics/intelligence and to have something fully autonomous out in the world -- which would mean it is far, far superior to Ava -- is too problematic for me. i never bought the scars (actually, i never noticed them) as portending to a potential robotic device. if Caleb is a robot then the whole movie would have to be reinterpreted. it would be very problematic for me in that respect. i just think the things that stand out, stand out are blemishes in an otherwise great, great film. i don't think there is extra-layers of complexity. the "blade, syrupy blood, kyoko jaw" are jarring and they just reflect a craftsmanship of the director that did not quite execute perfectly. again, alexgarland concedes there is at least 1 problem, when he was interviewed at "sxsw," respective to the keys and how it is problematic. i think, the other issues are also representative of problems, more than a heightened design. if Caleb was intended to be a robot...i would have massive problems with that, logically.

I just LOVE this interview, where Domhnall expresses his real thought of frustration regarding Caleb, but also his imagined reality of his actions and psychology. It makes perfect sense in the face of his acting of Caleb, but like him I also wanted more somehow. Not from the movie, which I deem perfect almost, but because as a fan you simply always want more of the same story.

It's been a looooong time since I've seen a film that I can add to my personal top 100 best films of all time. This is a masterpiece. Yes, I've seen the making of presentation, but I would like to know much more about how the director worked with the actors during those 6 weeks of shooting. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall, and watched the creation in process. Everyone brings their A game on this. My hat is off to the actress that played Kyoko. We know that there's a lot more to her than what we're told in the narrative. Good character.

In a lot of the discussion of this film that I've read, people tend to think that since Ava left Caleb locked up, the emotions she showed must have been fake. I feel like that's really ascribing too much human motivations to Ava. Given that Ava is fundamentally different than humans in certain aspects, I think it's completely plausible that she left Caleb there while still having feelings for him. We don't know exactly how her mind works. By painting her as a sinister manipulator, we are trying to fit her behavior into a human pattern.

I also assume it's Calvary, as they were probably talking about the time they interview Brendan Gleeson and that interview was about Calvary. So something along the lines of "Last year we interviewed your father when he was promoting Calvary. What do think about that movie?" was pretty likely to come up.The Guard is a great movie but it's from 2011; they already interviewed Domhnall in 2012, so why wait till 2015 to talk with him about this movie?
