DP/30: Ex Machina, Alex Garland 

Annihilation was one hell of a terrifying yet beautiful nightmarish experience.

Alex Garland is so thoughtful and honest in his replies. Much appreciated. I learned a lot. He is so funny at the end. And, of course, the movie is outstanding.

Just want to say how much I love these interviews. I really loved watching this one and this is my go to youtube channel for interviews because you are my favourite interviewer. My all time favourite was the Samuel L. Jackson interview. Not only are they entertaining, they're also richly educational. It probably won't come as much as a surprise that I'm a wannabe film maker myself. Who knows, maybe I'll get to be interviewed by you one day. Keep making great content!

After many DP/30 videos here (I recently caught up) I think I have to say -Thank you! - We are the fans who pay for the cinema tickets, dvds, blu-ray discs and you bring these Masterminds (Writers, Directors, Actresses/Actors) a bit closer to us. Just enough to give us a little bit more understanding about their 'drive'. It's really something man.

This movie was amazing. Alex Garland is great. I REALLY want to read some of his books now.

He looks like a guy I would really like to have a conversation with. Really interesting speaker. And I like how everything is a team effort to him. "We..", "OUR movie...".

Damn, I could listen to Alex Garland all day. What a brilliant and experienced guy. I want to own this movie right now, so that I can watch it over and over. This is a masterpiece of cinema.

"Dot on the horizon." Wow. *This film is one of the top 5 sci fi films ever made!* It might even be the best; in my mind, it rivals 2001 for its weight and intelligence. This film will attain cult/legendary status and will be appreciated for its intelligent conversation, amount of dialogue, wit/humor, and sensuality (among technical aspects of "fincher-like execution", excellence in scoring, excellence in effects, excellence in visuals...and on). This is a challenging piece (for humanity) and I know many will struggle mightily with it -- and for that reason I understand the "potential for obscurity." But the film hits at too much at what is going on today...and those trends are just starting to gain traction -- and are accelerating. The newest trailer, just released yesterday by A24, is excellent and those quotes are so impacting. But it will be the manifestation of trends _and the pressure of those trends (realized)_ that are going to push this film forward to ever greater heights in the future: (1) peak jobs, technological unemployment (yes), (2) races to advance automation into "robot cars" (yes), (3) continued internet disruption into other markets/industries (yes), (4) and of course the continued ascension of "AI" -- via large data, deep learning, and more extensive computational power -- (yes this too). All of these events correlate and drive the film's relevance.

for years Ive thought Garland was brilliant. I realized years ago the same man wrote: 28 Days Later, The Beach, Sunshine, etc I was utterly impressed. When I heard he was finally stepping in to directing I was so excited to see what he was going to do. He SMASHED everyone's expectations. Showed his true brilliance as we all knew he had. I agree with everything Garland does or says in movies.

So much good stuff packed into this one. Thank you so much for doing the work that you do. For an aspiring filmmaker such as myself, this channel is an invaluable resource of knowledge.

David, thanks again for another great interview! It's so interesting to hear these directors and actors share their perspective on the movies they made.

Poland does the best interviews of anybody out there. (Sorry, Charlie Rose & Jon Stewart). This was fascinating. Garland is a very interesting cat. It seems in this interview that he even finds himself hard to pin down. He reminds me of David Fincher, but I can't ever recall Fincher contradicting himself in an interview or a commentary."Ex Machina" is a fantastic film. I also love "Never Let Me Go".

The movie has blown up, for something made on a $15 million budget. It's gotten a lot of attention.

Recent discovery for me....JUST AWESOME! Cast and crew are actually having a normal and informative conversation rather than the typical EPK promotional crap...Keep up the amazing work!

I don't know if Galard will win an Oscar for this movie, but I hope he gets it because he is brilliant

If I could meet Alex Garland I'd like to shake his hand and thank him for bringing to life an A.I. Movie that answered all of my favorite A.I. Questions and made us think. Does Ava have human consciousness isn't even necessarily the question. Does a consciousness even need to be human and therefore does gender even exist in a consciousness?

I really love your interviews, the guy who pissed off Tarantino and Downey Jr. could learn a thing or two from you. How much of your questions are prepared beforehand , because of the interviews I've watched, the conversation always flowed which makes it seem more like a conversation than an interview really- and of the people you've interviewed, who was your favorite? Just curious......

at about 31 minutes, why does he use a 97-minute assembly cut as an example of a problem? Wouldn't 97 minutes be a great length?

Only watched this film last night for the first time. Loved it but I was creeped out by it completely. Haven't felt that way about a film in a long time. I did see the molecular connection coming to the shimmer as our main character was a biologist. That made sense. The guilt of the character following the affair was really interesting. The shimmer and the lives within it was incredibly creepy. Especially the bear. Awful.
