Coach Knight took the time to visit my aunt in the hospital. She had cancer, and he took the time to visit with her and offered Courtside seats, behind the bench, when she was able. It was one of the best days of her life!!
I pretty much agree. Don't care for some of the "towel snapping" he does with the Danettes, but, god-love-him, he asks short, succinct questions of guests that I would like to ask, and he listens to the answers. Rare.
Nope. Don't be fooled. Depending on a persons politics. It's all good if you're a dem. If you're a republican, then old dan suddenly has tough questions and comments.
@@rayscott9368 While DP is not anywhere near what Olberman is and was, he still allows his politics to be obvious a little too often. I really like DP, but I really wish he could keep that stuff out of the sports show.
DP, your understanding of him needing to go back and the fan base wanting it was more than warranted. In a world of chasing views and the like, that was a noble effort. I applaud you for it. RIP Coach
I think he was the best college basketball coach ever. Indiana were the Marines of College basketball. He made sure every kid went to class and did their work. He taught them how to play as a team. The kids who went through his program loved him. He was preparing them for life not just basketball.
^ haha As a Hoosier I like Hoosier coach Wooden. But not a chance in hell is he or K anywhere near the detailed brilliant coach as Bob. Just look at the talent depth particularly wooden had over his years. NBA MVP’s and all stars the two had playing for them throughout their careers. It’s in the dozens. Dozens! Bob Knight . Meh he had maybe 5 all star first rounders and 1 MVP Isaiah. Wooden flat out cheated in recruiting, and there’s a little sketchy stuff from K if your honest. Bob Integrity to max. Nothing even ever fishy. Bob=GOAT
I’m 54, born and raised in Anderson, IN. Coach was always a topic of conversation and we loved IU 🏀. So many good dudes, but Isaiah and Alford were so big during their tenure. We got a lot of free Rax Roast Beef (IU Win=free sandwich) in the 80’s bc of Coach. (If you know you know) When my sister txt me Coach died I knew who I wanted to hear talk about him. Thanks Mr. Patrick.
I'm 44, was born in Anderson, but grew up 30 minutes from there in Cicero. Loved IU basketball. My team was the one with Cheaney, Graham, Henderson, Bailey, etc. My grandma met him at IU East. And I know Rax Roast Beef! Good tribute by DP.
I was there when it all started ... my first year as a student in Bloomington was Knight's 2nd year as coach ... I was a gym rat and I played pickup games with guys from that undefeated '76 team ... I knew a few players who also told me stories about Knight ... Having said that, CBS should have booked an interview with ME because the eulogies I've heard in the past 24 have all been mush ...
Rax was great, yes I know the special. The best thing about Rax was the special sauce, they had the best sauce ever that ever was put on a Rax roast beef sandwich
I’m 57 from East Chicago Indiana, where many state basketball championship’s were won, a hard nosed steel mill town. Bobby Knight was one of the Greatest coaches in all of sports! His players went to class or they didn’t play, they also graduated! Bobby wasn’t called the General for nothing! He pushed players to reach their best potential. I was a junior at Indiana university when Bobby won his last National Championship, It was a hell of a party 🎉 Thanks for all great memories. God Bless Bobby Knight may he Rest In Peace.
@@I_Shit_on_your_shit_point also, when someone dies.... They aren't around anymore. They can't speak and influence anymore. People can have an influence, even if they're retired.
I have my own Bob Knight story. Probably in the '70's, I was sports director at a small tv station in Idaho Falls, Idaho. One summer weekend, Knight was playing in a celebrity pro-am golf tournament in Sun Valley, three hours away. Plus, he was a fly-fishing aficianado so he was able to combine the golf with fishing some world-famous streams in the area. I covered the tournament for the station, and was nervous and a little intimidated at approaching him, knowing his reputation at browbeating and berating big name media-types, let alone a no-name broadcaster from a small town tv station. But it was part of my job so I took a deep breath and approached him anyway. What I remember is I said, "Mr. Knight, my name is _______, I'm from _____ TV in Idaho Falls, and I wondering if I can ask you a couple of questions." Forgot the subject matter, but what I do remember is I purposely did not stick out my hand for a handshake, not wanting to seem like a too-eager groupie. Don't know if that threw him off guard, but as it turned out, he walked right over and stuck out his hand to me, the playing field temporarily leveled, as it were. He was gracious and courteous, I asked my questions, got my answers, thanked him and moved on. Later in the week he held a press conference in West Yellowstone, Montana, site of his fishing forays, and a number of big-shot sportscasters were there, from Seattle, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City, among others. There, the browbeating/berating Knight DID resurface and I just chuckled at how some of my sportscasting peers withered under his scorn, or maybe he just felt he needed to live up to his reputation.
Nice anecdote. My grandfather claims to be the first person in Bloomington to be insulted by Bobby. At the time of Knight's hiring, my grandfather was treasurer of the Varsity Club and was giving a boring statement of financial conditions to the boosters preceding Bobby's introduction as head coach. In the middle of reading liquidity numbers, Bobby yells "How in the F**k do you have that much money?" My grandfather stopped, smiled, then said "I think I'm done. ", and walked off stage.
You know Bob did sorta do a “‘John Wayne ‘ in as much taking on the personality that had been identified. Real or not. I can say this, most all Southern In Hoosier fans of Bob, we didn’t then nor do we now give a darn about the “bad”. We just ❤ him. Miss those days so much.
Bob will be missed! I have often felt his greatest compliments came from his opposing coaches. His players went to class, and could read and write. Winning or loosing is one thing, but the graduation rate and not being stupid were the most important.
Growing up on the westside of Indianapolis,IN…Indiana is Basketball Country period. point. blank. I remember Coach Bob Knight on the tail end of his coaching career as I just began my basketball journey and remember all of the times that my stepfather would tell me to watch Indiana Basketball and how Coach Knights players were fundamentally sound. Bob Knight was always a reference point with my basketball coaches growing up, he meant so much to Indiana Basketball and Indiana High School Basketball.
I went to school at IU from 82-87. Hardly missed a basketball game. Coach Knight was in his prime and we worshiped him and IU basketball. The controversy around him and some of his actions never phased me. He built great teams and made men out of boys. By today’s standards some of what he did seems extreme, maybe criminal. That was all near the end of a different time. And I miss it and respect the hell out of him. RIP Coach Knight.
We lost a Basketball Legend and a Great American, I will never forget the moment in time I had talking to Coach Bob Knight in Toledo Ohio. He was a great man. And so funny
Great job Dan. I would not consider myself a fan of Bob Knight’s methods. But his impact on the game and to his players are undeniable. Saying he was a complicated man is an understatement, but spot on.
As a southern Indiana kid in 70s you just grew up with a love 💕 for Bob Knight. You just did. And it never ever faded. And the “bad”.,?? We never did, nor still give a damn. 💕 ❤️ 💕
im so glad he was able go back to iu that night, it was a big deal , and still gives me goosebumps when see the video, im from just an hour away from IU, but never was IU fan or bobby fan, but always recognize the huge impact he had on state of indiana and basketball
@@michaelschaefer1904 I mean, Indiana fired him. Maybe not getting out of the round of 32 in 6 years made it easier for them to do that, but he reached a limit at a place where he should have been a god.
Few are being honest because of the whole "don't speak ill of the dead" thing. But the man was an abusive absolutely terrible person, I don't care about his charitable endeavors. Everything had to be on HIS terms.
Sigh. He probably was in many ways. He was a genius in some ways and those who could endure his toxicity learned about how to play basketball, but I'm sure plenty of people would have been destroyed by his coaching styl. Anyway, may he rest in peace. He brought joy to many.
A little story, that thankfully did not involve Coach Knight. Summer 1982, my buddy and I ride from Terre Haute to the IU football stadium to watch the football team practice, even shagged some punts for the kickers on the field, plus wandering all around the stadium. In 1982 things were much different than today. After time spent at the stadium, we walked over to Assembly Hall and were surprised to find the doors open. We walked around the hallway outside the arena looking at pictures on the walls, then go inside to the actual court. Lights were dimmed but racks of balls were still courtside. We walked down the steps and onto the court, grabbed a ball or two and shot some hoops for maybe ten minutes. I can only imagine the hell we might have caught had Coach left his office to see who was shooting on HIS court.
Idk how complicated it is. He put his hands on a player. My dad and grandfather have 80 years of HS coaching experience and they would never even dream of it. Those are young men that are trusting you, their families are trusting you and he puts his hands on them
@markkoolAidthat fact is an incredibly low bar. In the end, he crossed the line too often, which was a pity because he didn't need to to abusive like that. Indiana was right to let him go.. after 29 years! No one can see he was railroaded out, for Pete's sake!
Indiana is a small state with relatively few things going on. As an Indiana native, I can say this. Some Hoosiers are so desperate to be proud of something that they put up for too long with Bob Knight's dark side-because he won games. He made some Hoosiers feel good about themselves. I never particularly enjoyed him because to me, the dark side negated the joy of winning. The end does not justify the means to me. Nevertheless, he was a genius in many ways which is who he was allowed to stay at IU for 29 years. That's a success by any analysis. While not everyone could endure his style, I'm sure that many players attained great heights because of his coaching. He brought joy to many. He apparently was charitable. He was a complicated person like all of us. But he gave us a hell of a ride. May he rest in peace.
I’ll never forget the chair tossing. THAT was hilarious. I mean that chair went all the way to the other side! Then I think he might have thrown another chair before he got thrown out. The whole arena was standing, cheering and clapping! It was a great scene.
I just watched the clip of Knight returning to Bloomington in 2020, rejoining some of his past players, including Isiah Thomas. He looked genuinely moved and happy, which is saying a lot for Knight, considering his reputation. I would like to think Knight would've admitted to being wrong for not wanting to go back, considering the reception he got from his ex-players and fans. For that, I have no problem with DP taking partial credit for the reunion; indeed, listening to DP telling it, I find it easy to believe Knight, having liked Patrick, might have used the phone conversation with DP as inspiration to return.
As an IU fan living in Bloomington, I just wish Woodson had been hired earlier and was the coach in 2020 and IU would've been on their way back up to prominence when he came back.
"I hope they're all dead." Well, there is one thing about Coach Bobby Knight that I have to appreciate, and that is you never had any doubt about where he stood at regarding things.
I love the Dan Ego Show. When anxiety sets in, hearing Dan remind us all that the world still revolves around him, brings me a sense of needed stability. A sense that despite living in a chaotic, unpredictable world, some things never change. That's what I call comfort. And to listen to him gas-light, manipulate, and minimize the toxic behavior of the single greatest A-hole narcissist in sports history, is like watching Mozart at the clavichord, pure genius. Art in motion. Superlatives are an injustice. A standing ovation for both these guys.
I like aggressive people but TO ME Mr. Knight went beyond aggressive to the point of insanity and our Son was a good basketball player who wanted to play for Mr. Knight and I said "NO" because had he and had Mr. knight thrown a fit and put his hands on my Son, I assure you he would have been in serious trouble.
Some of his players would say they never had to deal with the media or any distractions because bob knight took that pressure off them. But yet when they won it was all about them.
@@ryansullivan5575 Sure, some of them. Men were tough back then, not like today's pampered prima donnas who can't take harsh criticism because their little feelings will get hurt.
@@VinnyKnucklesMaybe you should go back and research all the endless good deeds Bob Knight did for, not only his players, but countless other people, deeds he never advertised or took credit for, and would have been dismissed and completely forgotten if not for the multitude of individuals he helped who have since come forward to tell their stories! Yes he could engage in boorish behavior and sometimes said and acted in a cringeworthy fashion, but these incidents pale in comparison when stacked up against the mountain of positive things he did over his lifetime! Scumbags? Yeah, they’re out there, and unfortunately, they ain’t rare, in fact, there’s more than a few self-serving, pandering elected officials where that label fits perfectly!
@@desitterspace2127 I agree there are worse people than him, of course. I don't doubt he did plenty of good things as well. Normally bad things outweigh the good since most people just expect people to be generally good, rather than giving them a bunch of extra credit for it. Still, I am willing to acknowledge he is a mixed bag.
@@desitterspace2127It's funny how Knight's supporters talk about his good deeds that he did anonymously on practically every social media blog about him. Maybe Knight didn't really do such good deeds out of pure altruism, after all. Perhaps he did them so he could have talking points to distract and shut down his critics when he started acting like a fussy little bitch.
Bob Knight got along well with heated rival Illinois basketball coach Lou Henson. That says something right there. He also got along well with and always gave props to Michael Jordan. I think if you were a no nonsense no trouble maker Bob Knight was not going to have a problem with you. He just wasn't diplomatic at all and over time he did get worse and worse. But you could say the same about many great men. Bob Knight was a great basketball coach with roots deep in basketball lore. It's a shame he kind of fell off the wagon of self discipline and hurt some people but he also helped many people. Who knows what demons he was chasing. And I don't mean that in the religious sense I'm referring to abuse, neglect who knows. Definitely a difference maker.
When he got to the Final Four in 1973, he was very influential in the Big 10 in hiring guys he liked: Lute Olson, Eldon Miller, Gene Bartow, Lou, Gene Kaedy, Gary Williams, Jud Heathcote and others. Good coaches with good character. But when they were starting to beat him and then he question player eligibility, coaches character or just finally dis him.
I think it was the Angels baseball pitcher Dean Chance who grew up in the same area and knew Knight as a high school athlete who was asked “could Knight the player have played for Knight the coach? Chance laughed and said no way, he wouldn’t have lasted two days.
Even on someone’s passing. Dan can’t resist throwing in his usual humble brag about how he was the big shot at espn. Good lord Dan Patrick so narcissistic
i like dan's self and don't watch him very often. my mother died about a month ago and loved college basketball and actually outlived BK so anybody respectful of the coach isn't going to rub me wrong. i understand your point, eottp!@@EndoftheTownProductions
I remember when he got in trouble with the media for supposedly whipping a black player with a towel during practice. The next game while he was on the bench the player jokingly came up to him and started whipping him with a towel.
Cant say I agree with people on knight, I wouldn’t want my son to play for him or anyone that abusive. Kinda like the husband telling the wife” see what you made me do” after hitting her. Nothing is worth knight’s abusive episodes, nothing.
When I learned of and then watched the comments from Coach Knight that “Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player I’ve ever seen” BEFORE Jordan played his first game with the Bulls, that’s special, because he didn’t say things like that unless he believed it to be a universal truth. And it was.
The whole world turned when we started debating how Bob Knight treated his players, now it is okay to just suck, you'll never get the hand to the throat, and I'm not saying that is correct but like a comment I read he didn't kill the kid. There is no bar anymore, so just be nice to everyone and say its okay you tried. LOL.
Meet Bobby Knight at Lawrence Central High school he was meeting Steve Resley to play for IU , was blessed to have meet the man the coach , he told me stories about TedWilliams. about fly fishing, also played golf in couple of tournaments down at IU , I will miss him big part of my life
I couldn't stand the guy...highlight my life was razzing him behind the bench @ Williams' Arena in Minneapolis and the Gophers clobbered Indiana...he was hot. Loved to see him get red faced. What an ego.
I understand coachs sentiment. I wish he’d have let it go when the offending parties were gone. In the end, the sports media won, which is a shame because college basketball is all about money now and that’s what they wanted. For those not old enough, basketball is never going back and will never be as pure and as exciting and meaningful as it was before. The innocence is gone and it’s a shame.
Bob Knight was starting to lose it mentally towards his old age, but so does everybody. I was too young to remember his championship days, but my last memory of him was him at an Indiana Trump rally in 2016. He said "if Trump is elected president there would be no bullshit in the White House." Thought that was funny.
there's a big difference between being a great man and a great businessman, dan. and i can't endorse that negative reinforcement is more effective than positive reinforcement, though i have seen study results that attest to positive reinforcement being much more effective than negative... but for some strange and stupid tendency, we seem more enamored with the brutes and their brutality, the people who use their authority to tear us down, rather than those who made us great by getting us to feel good about ourselves. i get that you got in the inner circle, and that it made you want to stay in his refracted spotlight, and that you wanted to get his approval and bring him back to indiana. but that also means you ignored behavior that was violent, misogynistic, and hateful. there are men in prison for doing less, there are broken homes, divorces... maybe even mention how prospective players were discouraged from going to indiana while he was coaching BY HIS OWN PLAYERS. complicated is your word, dan, because you can't see clearly that a bad man gave you attention and by doing so, helped your career. sorry, but lebatard did a better job of getting to the crux of bob knight, possibly because he didn't have a personal story to blur the lines.
Wasn't he the guy when asked about rape said, "They (women) should just relax, lay back and enjoy it?", or was that another coach? If it was him, it was just another example of his bully personality.
Your taking way to much credit for trying to get coach knight back to assembly hall Dan, it wasn't you it was a hand full of his closest players and wife that made that finally happen
