Life-long maintenance tech here. 16 years automotive, heavy truck, and equipment, diesel generators, and 16 years A&P (jets and turbo-props). So I know a couple of things. removing the DPF and the SCR is a great idea, Just don't tell anyone. the guy's only mistake was getting on RU-vid and telling everyone which is to say, "screw you come and get me". these systems are counterproductive since they reduce your fuel mileage by nearly 25%, (at least my coach) are unreliable, and are expensive to maintain. That's why repair shops love them $$$. I have an ISL9 Cummins in a motorhome and the emissions repairs are breaking the bank. Here in America, I would not recommend a delete to a trucker as they are regularly inspected, but I am not, so they'd never know unless I bragged about it. just keep your mouth shut. A better cheaper and more efficient solution would have been to go diesel electric like a locomotive with an energy recovery battery system doubling the fuel mileage of the heavy trucks, thereby reducing emissions. So the logical question is, if we are so worried about emissions, why didn't we go that route. Money, money, money, money,,, money (like the song)! I'm tired of getting screwed by the corps and making them rich. It's a sham! besides when laws are stupid, which includes most but not all environmental laws, ignore them. Oh, and BTW. CO2 is not a pollutant!!! without it, we'd all be dead. Just my opinion so take it for what it is worth to you.

If we're making the point about illegal modifications, the Hilux as modified was illegal in Western Australia and if it was running 285 70 17 (you mentioned 33s) then it's also illegal in all states. Western Australia has a lmit on vehicle lifts of 50mm, so you can't do a 2 inch lift and run anything except stock tyre size. But a 285 70 17 is also an illegal tyres tyres for most 4wds as they are 56mm over stock size and the lmit in all states is 50mm. The Hilux is also running an illegal amount of spot lights. In Western Australia the limit is 4 and the Hilux was running 8. So these mods make the Hilux illegal and unroadworthy. Going forward, you should both remove these videos talking about illegal mods as there's too much misinformation and contradiction.

The difference is stating the fact to check for legality’s and not suggesting it’s a great thing without pointing that out. Also I made a follow up video saying that 33’s were not great for many reasons, maybe you missed that one. Also treps are not legal but they are okay tyres not my driving tyres. Thought I’d point that out before you reply with that one
@thang55
@thang55 2 года назад
@@Ronny_Dahl I did see the the HILUX MODIFICATION REGRETS video but there's no mention of legality, only fuel usage, rolling resistance and low range performance. Look, everyone does it, the same with cars over GVM and tow rigs over GCM. I'm just saying I wouldn't make a video talking about illegal mods as it just raises the profile of the entire 4wd community with the authorities. Just because a mod is illegal doesn't make it unsafe. A 75mm lift is legal in QLD, NSW and Vic, so either they are all wrong (even though VSB14 of the ADRs states it's legal) or WA is over governed. A GCM upgrade pre rego is legal in WA but the same car and suspension fitted post rego is illegal - same car and mods but the red tape separates them. Maybe what's needed here is a video covering all the rules and regs so youtube viewers have a better understanding of what they can and can not do.

My 2018 Newmar coach has 40,000 miles and I already had to replace the def header. it went into engine stop 5 mph limp mode and I was stranded. good thing I'm a tech. So answer me this one. If you can physically verify the DEF level in the tank with a stick and can buy a $25 DEF quality tester, then why, the engine stop 5mph !@%$#^& limp mode stranding you? Simple answer, so you have to take it to the shop and spend megabucks, that's why! I bought a scanner and a header and replaced it myself. And why not separate the level and quality sensor so you don't have to change the Whole $1000 thing? Greedy corporations piss me off!

People thought i was being picky however when you have an expensive vehicle and you have it modified so that it is no longer safe or legal and then you find the insurers will not pay when something happens, may not be your fault, don’t blame someone else for what you have done to your vehicle. I just want to say this, Matter can change form through physical and chemical changes, but through any of these changes matter is conserved. The same amount of matter exists before and after the change-none is created or destroyed. Meaning the soot inside the DPF doesn't just disappear during regeneration, it changes form from soot particles into ash particles.. This ash is also a lot lighter than soot meaning it'll travel further than soot once airborne. What are the most harmful airborne particles? UFPs are the most dangerous particulate matter because their tiny size makes them extremely inhalable. They are less than 0.1 microns in diameter and make up roughly 90% of all airborne particles. Now which is worse? Soot you can see or ash that you can't? Just because you can't see microwaves, ultraviolet waves doesn't mean they aren't harmful..
@akmurf7429
@akmurf7429 11 дней назад
Absolutely, and it remains in the atmosphere longer, just like volcanic ash. It's just a stupid and expensive system that doesn't accomplish anything except to make corporate people rich. The people who mandated and designed this crap know this and lobby the government to enforce it. They need to stop calling congresspersons and senators "representatives". They don't represent us. Most are bought and paid for by corporate interests. they get in there with a $1000 to their name, and come out millionaires after a few years. Well, we aren't paying them that kind of money, so they are getting it elsewhere. We need to get corporations out of the government, first thing! Then slap the EPA upside the head for choking the economy!

Also add in there: DPFs often aren't well designed for city driving. DPFs can clog up, put your vehicle into limp mode and require replacement from as little as 80,000km in the case of the car I had. Are very expensive to replace. Over $2,000 every 3 years is absolutely BS. Required to use additional fuel to create that burn cycle. Required in some vehicles to "have to" go for a minimum 30 minute drive a week at 100km or so for it to do it's burn cycle, and if that's not in your needed routine, then that's a lot of carbon. The system is stupid. But that's it

Sorry mate, but while I fully agree with the content of this video and am a big fan of your channel, this sounds like a perfect example of "someone preaching water, but drinking wine". You explicitly state that you don't want to own a car from 2016 (or later) because, amongst others, you like the V8 sound and power without DPF. Yet you make a big issue about the environmental / health consequences of doing away with the DPF in a post-2016 car. Do you honestly believe that the two pre-2016 cars you own are less polluting because you're legally allowed to run them without DPF?

Maybe in the off-roading world the main reason to remove the DPF is for a V8 sound but for the rest of us sound is the least important reason. The most important reason is not having something that could potentially go wrong at anytime and then having an expensive fix or to have a DPF clean. 2nd reason I would say is to let the engine breath easier and to gain more power. I really don't think the environmental impact of a small percentage of owners removing them is that much of a concern. There's much more of an impact from other things such as air travel, fossil fuel power stations and things such as cargo ships etc. Electric/hydrogen vehicles are gonna be main stream pretty soon so it's just totally a none issue, especially considering the small percentage of owners that do it at the moment

Figure it would be prudent of me to add that fines and unroadworthy also apply to the removal of any emission systems (ie cat converters) and can lend you in the same situation. Also the Toyota issues around the dpf seem mainly centred around it being a new system, we’ve had the systems on euro cars for 15+ years now and some brands struggle with issues in the early days but very rare to have major issues with them these days.

That's not the main reason that people want to get rid of DPF's. People want to get rid of DPF's because when they clog up they fail and cost thousands and thousands of dollars to replace and Toyota in my experience as a dealer who specialised in 4x4's and commercials seem to be one of the worst. DPF's only burn off when sitting at highway speeds so if you're not regularly on the highway, you're more likely to clog up then other drivers. I've seen DPF's go on vehicles with less than 3000k's on them and they aren't covered under warranty. Some vehicles have a manual Burn off mode in the ecu but its not guaranteed to work every time.

OK, you said that emissions are a really big deal, but you said yourself "I won't buy a vehicle fitted with a DPF". That means you're driving two vehicles that both produce diesel particulate which enters the lungs and the blood stream. So what's worse, removing a DPF or choose to drive a diesel vehicle without a DPF? Seems like they both produce the same amount of emissions. Just on DPF, there's two facts you neglected to mention. 1. A DPF makes a vehicle less fuel efficient, by up to 2l/100km. So DPF vehicles burn more fuel (to do the same job) and produce more emissions. 2. The question should be asked, where to all those emissions no go? Answer: into the DPF, until it's full, then the car is overfueled to cause the DPF to heat up and burn that soot and convert it into....Carbon Monoxide, the greenhouse gas.

From an engineer to an influencer, people don't remove their DPF for noise and power, it's removed for reliability and general engine health. DPF's increase EGT's, and change how consistently the engine runs (depending on how blocked the DPF is at the time). They also go wrong as hell, and put your car in limp mode. I'd be interested to see how much of these "prevented emissions" are spat out during a burn though. Same stuff as EGR, but more harmful to the car in my opinion. Are the emissions saved really ofsetting the need for a rebuild in certain situations?

It’s 99% problematic those EGRS and DPFS. As you said causes the car to go into limp mode but can be as bad as hydro locking an engine as the EGR cooling problem on the P5AT. Majority will think people do it for the noise but don’t know the real problems it causes.

100% if the government want to constantly introduce these ridiculous emissions laws that over the long term have very little positive impact on emissions then it should not be at cost to the consumer or the reliability of the product/vehicle! From an engineer to an engineer your reliability claims are spurious at best. Sure there were issues with initial roll outs ie the 2.8 Toyota but those have all been addressed and there are seemingly no problems 2020 onwards. They are also very effective (some claims >90%), as they are oxidating the carbon into CO2. Besides all of that there is still the ethics of the whole thing; how much damage to the public is worth a tiny boost in performance and potential reliability gains? Taking them out will just accelerate the death of diesel as regulators crack down.

Hey Ronnie, great vid. I’ve had a number of sports cars and a couple of late model diesels go over the pits (vehicle inspections) over the years and have known plenty of people that have done the same for various reasons (yellow stickers, getting engineered mods etc). From my non scientific observations you can get away with a lot of mods including “illegal” wheels and lifts. But the moment you remove catalytic converters, mess with dpfs or vent anything to atmosphere (like a blow off valve or waste-gate ) it has been an instant fail (meaning the car is not roadworthy) which lines up with your message. It May be worth doing a video on the process of how to get your mods certified by an engineer and then going in for inspection and then advising your insurance etc (hey you could even do a dpf delete and see what happens). Cheers - by the way, having watched the video in question, I'm not fully convinced they deleted the DPF without replacing it - either way they could have done a better job making that clear to avoid this situation.

People leave the DPF in so you have to burn more diesel to do the same job and create more soot that eventually comes out in 1 big dump from the DPF anyway. The high EGT are a great excuse to keep having to replace cooked turbos. The EGR is great way to add soot straight back into your engine intake to create a grinding paste to degrade the oil and wear out the motor 10 times faster so you need to buy another motor after 5 years of general use. The EGR cooler is a great device for blowing up engines too dealships love them..easy money. The greenies should put DPFs and EGR's on their private jets and private luxury boats. DPF's and EGR's are just GREAT for engines..... and having to burn more diesel is great for the environment.🤯

By removing your DPF you’re actually also helping ensure not just your vehicle but all other diesels get completely banned sooner. Australia might be behind the curve when it comes to emissions standards by they will catch up. Without a DPF your vehicle will emit between 10x and 100x more of those really nasty particles that kill people. So when they are measuring levels around towns and cities, your vehicle will raise levels much higher than necessary and therefore require measures like some cities around the world have implemented to get levels down - banning diesels.

Good job Ronnie! If the manufacturers were to relocate the DPF to a higher spot on the vehicle, they could be proactive in stopping bushfires worldwide. However most goverments are pushing for full electric vehicles to eliminate our outdoor hobbies. Although some manufacturers like jeep are trying to build an electric offroad vehicle, they are far ftom having the driving mileage equal to diesel or petrol. I cant fathom trying to do an electrical repair on a trail like the Canning Stock Route. The DPF only provides extreeme heat while it is in regen mode so it can burn off the soot it has collected. Most diesels create the most soot while at lower RPMs, and this sends the DPF into regen more often causing concern for brushfires while overlanding.Caterpillar engines here in the USA could meet the particulate matter reduction without using a DPF, but could not get the certification because the law required the engines to have a DPF. So as Ronnie stated dont be an Id10t removing any item the manufacturer had to install, you WILL get fined.

If you watch at it with international travel in mind it gets a bit different. Dpf and egr systems require the highest fuel quality and lowest Sulphur in the fuel which is not available everywhere at every time. For us it's illegal and there is no way around keeping dpf and egr, we just have to deal with it.

It is wrong to say ALL DPF filters potentially can cause grass fires. The DPF filter on an Isuzu D-Max and MUX is next to the exhaust manifold in the engine bay, nowhere near the bottom of the vehicle. A DPF filter works much more efficiently in the heat next to the engine than as part of the exhaust where it is constantly cooled by the passing air. When DPF's became mandatory, Isuzu re-engineered the vehicle whereas it appears all others took the cheap way out and just added it into the exhaust.

There is some great points in this video - however there are also some things in which you failed to state as to why people remove emissions equipment on Diesel by FAR the biggest reason is reliability (especially in cold climates). 1. DEF fluid freezes easily in colder climates and can cause issues, 2. dpf filter build up and regeneration is also far more common in colder climates 3. EGR (especially in colder climates) can cause a lot of soot build up in your intake system and lead to engine failure (if your dpf fails - this can also cause extreme backpressure and can lead to engine failure). 4. Efficiency - since your not burning fuel on regen - your not using fuel on something other than powering the engine. I don't think most people who do this want to do it to create soot cloud ("roll coal") - they just want their trucks to work and be dependable. Granted I don't think the modern emissions systems in newer diesels are that bad and they have definitely worked out a lot of the issues - however ask any shop owner and they will tell you by FAR the largest service item they see trucks in for are emissions related issues. So in a bit the video was a bit disingenuous about why people delete emissions systems from their diesel power plants. There is a reason why military vehicles (and many government vehicles) are exempt from requiring emissions systems and the key aspect by far and large is reliability and you completely missed the point on this one.
