I have been photographing for 54 years. The conundrum for me is that question, "Do we need all these features to capture a great image?" I think not. Over those decades I have used many brand name cameras (Rolleiflex TLR, 5 versions of Nikons, Canon 5DMIII, Contax N, several Olympus, Pentax and now Fuji X-H1). What I have learned is that there are only several things that I need to take a quality photograph: sharp lens with great resolution, very accurate spot AF and a terrific sensor. The rest of the stuff that they have piled into cameras is just that--stuff. I do like, however, the connectivity that is now commonplace within cameras. So, to my point: enjoy and learn while shooting on a basic camera. Experiment with the settings on your camera. Develop an "eye". You WILL develop your craft through practice, workshops, tutorials, etc. It is very satisfying in the end and your brain will love it!

Yesterday I used the Sony RX100 VII for the first time without reading any manuals or getting any hints. For someone like myself who is concerned about image quality and how it reflect on my services, I would choose to spend the money on this camera any day to get the better image quality over my Samsung S9 phone. After using the camera for a couple of hours I was driven to learn a bit more about what I am missing and so checked out this DPReview video. I've learned a lot of what other features to look for when I am out shooting with it today. Thanks for the hints of what to explore!

If you want a camera for video why not buy one specifically made for it alone? If you add the loss on the V1 and the cost of the V11 and all the extras you could afford (maybe used) a pro video camera.

I hope they split the RX100 line like Sony did to the A7 line. Could you imagine if the did a 24-70 or 16-70 in f1.4 or f1.2??? For it to be perfect I think making a faster lens and putting a hot shoe on the opposite end of pop-up viewfinder. And full touch screen. And built in nd filter.

Thanks for the review! I've shot with the M6, and it's a great little camera. I'm sure this will be even better. The 24-200 range is nice for me, since I prefer the wide end or telephoto lenses. I don't really get all the love for 24-70....such a boring focal length range. I can live with f/4.5 for the big increase in versatility.

I have 50 years of photography, currently I spend my day downloading RAW files from various manufacturers: Canon, Nikon, Sony, Leica, Lumix ... Honestly, I find no significant differences in the quality of the images that justify saying - this is good and that is lousy - All are great, since the Nikon D80 and Canon 50D nobody has done much better. It is necessary to exalt the photographer, that makes the difference.

I think the "vloggger" market has the ability to save the 1 inch / point and shoot market (or at least make it survive in it's niche like all other cameras are doing). Cellphones aren't full featured enough, and full video DSLR/Mirrorless are too bulky and complex. Whenever I'm on vacation anywhere I see lots of people making videos of their trip and trying to make them "youtube professional" instead of just a quick cell phone video. Lots of cellphones on handhold devices, stabilization mounts, and with franken-lenses attached to them; I've even seen cellphones on tripods. Many are willing to upgrade to something like a DJI Osmo to document their trips, and I think if you have a full featured stills camera that is also a high quality vlogging camera people will buy them even if it's only for their own 20 subscriber channel (many 100k+ full time vloggers are already using these cameras). The only gap now is they need ease of use, and lower prices. The key features for vlogging are becoming pretty standard: Flip up screen, mic jack, decent stabilization, and and arm length wide angle lens.
@terrytk9398
@terrytk9398 5 лет назад
Dustin B hi - I would agree. I gave a small Sony camcorder which takes great video. But for family trips etc use the following:iPhone 7 & Filmic pro app. And handheld grip, Moment wide angle lens, Rode ext. mic. So although quite a set up it’s still small & portable. I suppose capitalism is making all these options available to filmmakers.😀

I eagerly anticipate the release of the Sony RX100 Mark VIII, hoping for exceptional specifications at a price point of €1499. I'm are prepared for this investment.My desired specifications include: -4K resolution at 60 fps with 10-bit depth -4K capability at 120 fps with 10-bit depth -Integration of a high-quality 3.5mm audio jack -Aperture options of at least f/1.4 or f/1.8 to facilitate captivating background blur -Utilization of Sony's latest and most advanced 1-inch sensor technology -Implementation of 32-bit audio recording directly within the camera, a feature that would be truly remarkable -Integration of USB-C for convenient charging from power bank batteries -Enhanced touchscreen functionality -Improved software interface -Better lowlight video recording like a a7s3 -Maintaining the renowned build quality characteristic of the RX100 series, ensuring durability akin to that of a tank. Solid review as always. I agree with the thinking of why Sony went with the longer range lens because smartphones suck for zooming, but i also wished they released an f1.8 shorter focal range version like last time. An f1.8 on a 1” sensor is still gonna be better for low light shooting than a smartphone. Having said that, like a lot of people i tend to grab my smartphone over a point & shoot now for most of my daily shooting. It’s just all around better for convenience & for quickly sharing photos to social media. Plus these point & shoots are getting crazy expensive. I much rather invest in a Sony mirrorless a7s or r with some lenses for speciality shooting...and use my smartphone when i want to shoot fast & light. It’s just getting harder & harder to justify a point & shoot these days.

Great honest review! I remember the RX100 gen1's poor shutter feel. Lots of dust issues with these and probably worse with the 200mm version. I had a GR II as well, both were impressive, but also equally frustrating to use. I'd rather have a better/faster/fixed 24mm with better weather/dust seals. If they could integrate a switch directly to 85mm (or 135mm) it would be ideal for me. Most of the time I find myself shooting at the ends of zoom ranges. Adding a gimbal or monopod to a smartphone (pixel 3 owner) can yield incredible results these days. I was very optimistic when Sony started making devices likes the QX100. This would use the superior processing power/connectivity/storage features already available on a smartphone.

For the price sony already makes an amazing "pocketable" camera. Their a6400 with the kit 16-50 seems to blow this away. Yes, its a little bit larger but with the kit lens it can still store in a purse or a fanny pack. I mean how many people are really putting the RX in their pocket with their already capable smart phone? Plus the ability the aps-c line has with all of my already owed e-mount glass, i just think the pocket point and shoot line is about at its end, or it should be.

I keep my RX100 in my purse for spontaneous shots. It runs circles around my phone. I have fantastic photos blown up on canvas from the RX100, which I couldn’t do from my phone and look this good. When I travel I keep two extra batteries in my purse and I keep shooting long after my cell battery died. There is absolutely a place for a camera like this. Is it expensive? Of course it is. It has a9 technology in it. It has the world’s best AF. But it’s a quarter of the price of an a9. Older versions of this camera with older technology come with lower price points. There’s a version for everyone. The video specs on this look amazing, possibly better than my Handicam. If so, then this camera is actually a bargain.
@mikldude9376

Yep , in my neck of the woods the a 6400 is somewhat cheaper even with a kit lens , and the 6400 with the 16/50 kit lens and a vlogging kit (shotgun mic , small stand ) is still 100 cheaper than the point and shoot .
@AndreasAntics
@AndreasAntics 5 лет назад
Phil Jones65 Not the point. This camera isn’t meant to replace the old point and shoot cameras from the 90s. That market is absolutely fulfilled by phones. Soccer moms taking photos of their kids for IG can absolutely get by with a phone. THIS camera is made for travelers. A photog coworker recommended this camera to me, and he was spot on. I left this camera at home once and brought my DSLR to Alaska for “better” photos and regretted it. Lugging that glass up to the glaciers was not fun. I swore I’d only travel with my Sony after that. I recommended this camera to a travel book writer and she used this camera (Mark 6) for the photography in her book. This camera is for people who want the quality and manual control of a DSLR squeezed into a compact. I bought a scuba kit for this and outshot all the GoPros. This camera is for my husband who wouldn’t know aperture from a hole in his sock, and he is able to take photos he’s truly proud of. Just because it isn’t for you doesn’t mean there isn’t a market for it. Yeah, I can get a 6400 and kit lens for the same price, but I don’t want to haul that around Europe. I can slide this in my pocket. I can discreetly take shots I would have been too shy to take with a more noticeable camera. Will I upgrade to the Mvii? I’m considering it. Doubling the zoom is worth it. Adding the A9 technology is a game changer. Might be how I spend next year’s tax refund. It’s just odd when you think this is the death of Sony and I see my dream camera.

Hi, thanks for the interesting review. Chris, you haven't said if there has been an image quality improvement compared to the Sony RX100 Vi considering the Mark Vii has a new sensor. I would also like to know if there is any way to see the images you've taken in burst mode when reviewing them in playback mode. It's very annoying to have to wait to download the photos to a computer to check if you've got the desired pic.

The Sony RX100 series has always been too small for me. I used the RX100 M2 for a weekend & it was just too small. When is the RX10 V coming out? It’s been almost 2 years since RX10 IV.

@@okaro6595 Have you ever seen that camera? Considering sensor 12mpix 1/1.7" with 8x6mm vs 20mpix 13x10mm so the area is 2 times bigger, but resolution also. It certainly is not "Much bigger". The density is about equal and for me 12mpix in compact camera is plenty enough. If I want more, I just take my DSLR. Considering low light performance, Oly has constant F2.8 through whole range, so it is easier to keep fast shutter speed at long zoom end. Not to mention 100mm difference. Considering size and wight, there is 100g and about 1cm difference in height and thickness when sony EVF is retracted. But Oly has hotshoe and EVF is always available. And yes OlyXZ-2 is probably closer on the size/weight aspect, but then we have F1.8-F2.4 vs F2.8-4.5 difference....

Not enough difference between a cell phone camera and this to justify the price. Just in Calgary, went to this cool store you might have heard of, The Camera Store, and picked up a discounted Lumix FZ300 super zoom. Great travel camera. Less than 1/3 the price of the Sony.

I think the vii is fantastic technologically speaking, but I'm going to keep holding on. They have yet to make the "perfect" RX100 model. I'm glad they're adding back in mic jack support, but I'm really holding out for the return of the 24-70mm 1.8 lens and built-in ND filter. I owned the RX100 iii for a time, and I loved it so much that I'm actually picking one up again. The lack of 4K and HLG on older ones is a bummer. For me the perfect RX100 would be the lens system of the RX100 iii with the features of the vii, plus a hot shoe.

how many problems have you encountered yet with the Ricoh GR3? dust or oil on the sensor? poor auto focus and battery? that IBIS "clunk">? the front ring fall off? no IOS wifi compatibility? :)
@PPYTAO
@PPYTAO 5 лет назад
shawn None of those yet. My sensor is lovely and clean. Auto focus has been great for me, but I don’t tend to shoot much that requires super quick pin point critical focus in the dark. Battery isn’t the best, but I usually shoot on my lunch break, or walking through the city between public transport and work, so it hasn’t died on me yet (~100-300 shots a day). And when I do eventually get out for a full day of shooting I’ll make sure I have a 2nd battery, standard practice really. The IBIS is actually barely noticeable at all, so no issues there. My front ring has fallen off once while I was removing it from my point and shoot pouch. I’m not sure if that was an old firmware issue but wifi works flawlessly on iOS for me. One of the more straightforward smart phone connections I’ve used on a camera tbh. As for actual issues, 1 in every few hundred photos when shooting jpeg seems to corrupt and is not viewable in camera. And I once had a very strange OS freeze that took a couple of battery removals and restarts to sort out.

@@francuasantonious I would not agree so much. RX100 VII definitely is not a very cheap camera but it provides a lot of functions which you probably will not get for less. Getting 8× zoom, 4k30p with Log mode, slow-motion up to 250p in almost full HD and up to 1000p in smaller resolutions, mic input,... If you are buying RX100 VII just pro photos, I woul agree and it is non-sense camera for still for such a price. You're the first person to say they actually prefer the Canon lens(es) over the Sony's. I thought the Canon's are very soft. Apart from that, any view on image stabilization in photo mode? Has it improved since the Mk IV? I've used the Mk I and IV and am not a fan of their OSS.

I was initially looking for a 1" sensor camcorder more for a "B-roll" type of shooting or short video sequences. After doing a lot of research, I realized that a good semi-pro camcorder is quite expensive, so I ended up my search with the RX100 VA and VII. The VII definitely covers my needs, is cheaper than a good 4K camcorder, is much more compact and it seems to produce the same (or better) image quality. The only downsides are the lack of built-in ND filters, but this problem is fixed with an external filter adapter, and the very limited bokeh effect from a smaller aperture lens, which is much better in the VA model.

hi thank you very much for that video. i have a question and hopefully you can reply. im just wondering for HOW LONG you can record continuous 4K Videos after the recording stops with the Sony RX100 VII . i tought there is kind of a limitation on 4k video? can you tell more about that please?
@drArtA
@drArtA 5 лет назад
If we talk about the video, The RX100 VI and RX100 VII are 35% closer to the 20X optical zoom of the camcorder, thanks to the long end of 200mm. Therefore, the RX100 VII can be considered as a compact replacement for a video camera with poor OIS, but with a 1"sensor from PRO-segment video cameras for $2000 or more. It's damn expensive anyway! Any amateur 4K camcorder will have less noise in low light conditions, as small 2/3 sensor noise is easier to quench than large 1"sensor grains. Compare PANASONIC HC-VX1 4K Camcorder, Sony FDRAX53 / B 4K Camcorder with RX100 VII in low light conditions with auto settings, and you will understand what I'm talking about.
