We need Edd and Mehdi to start their own podcast. Occasional appearances just aren't enough!

I am so happy that Mr. Sorenson is a proponent of rationale based teaching/learning.

Medhi is an incredible instructor! I cannot wait to train with him again. One day training with Edd won't scare the 💩 out of me ❤

@MikeDodds as someone who’s been trained and certified by Edd on the Sidewinder and Cave DPV, I can tell you that I wish I had started learning from him earlier in my career. Nothing but respect and great things to say. I look forward to learning more from Edd and Mehdi, can’t wait for the next one. I think the key to not being nervous or “scared” of training with Edd is realizing you have nothing to lose…they can only make me better, and I’m not afraid of being seen as a poor diver, compared with them I will always be a “poor diver”, so what’s there to be afraid of? I love being challenged, and I can’t believe we have the opportunity to learn from some of the best divers that ever lived. That is a huge privilege that not many people have access to…golfers can’t get “certified” by Tiger Woods, basketball players can’t go take a class with LeBron James, but we can (and should!) train with and learn from absolute elite professionals like Edd and Mehdi. Hi everyone. I didn’t edit this video. I simply gave the zoom link to Gus and for some reason the direct upload from zoom must have cut off the ending. Gus said he will go back and try to upload just the ending. Believe me I don’t even know how to edit so definitely not sure why zoom cut it off but it played fully when we watched the direct link. Stay tuned for the upload of the brief ending that Gus will upload as a part 2 (it’s like 1 minute).

Love this style of content, but wish the ending wasn't as abrupt. I wanna know what Edd had to say.

Stay tuned. No idea why that was cut off as it’s on the zoom recording. Gus will upload the ending.

I have paid professional instructors for training and was just "observed." It sucks as I was not any better off and did not get the certs either. The scuba training industry is the worst I have dealt with in anything. Very few instructors seem to really care or have the experience to teach well. I hired them to learn knowing I did not know what I needed to. Unfortunately, I can only take 1-2 weeks off a year to go train with someone. So this has all hurt me in the long run.

@Navy1977 I think they would be also. I just want to learn and be the best I can be. I would rather not pass and know why and work on it than to be passed when I should not have been. I already had to get retrained on my rebreather last year. Should not have been certified but I was. All good now.

To me, fundamentals are the most important thing! Ed's training of knowing the why is one of the best training principles that should be done "Hobby" wide. But I do have a major question about the training. If I take all the training, drysuit, side mount/rebreather, DPV, etc.. Does it make me a professional diver? I think the mindset of most (using Ed's friend incident) divers is once I get the card I'm a pro! And that's how you got that incident of zero vis. I have thousands of hours in Fire Service training. Does that make me a professional Fire fighter? I don't think so! I was dive certed to advanced diver. Emergency diver trained, and an EMT-D Does this make me a professional diver?? I don't! I believe it the mindset of the individual. Ed and Medhi's training principles are in my opinion the best way to be trained. If you know and prove the fundamentals and the why, you can be a "better" diver. It's really the instructor who's training is the reflection that shows when someone is trained! If I were to go back through my certs. I'd prefer Ed's and Medhi's training than what I had.

I’m only familiar with how GUE do it but I was really surprised to hear that other agencies train with having the out of air diver in front - that’s just seems crazy to me.

If we don't know what we don't know, how in the hell are we supposed to know what a potential instructor doesn't know? Trust the internet? Trust youtube fame? That's a serious question. FWIW, I actually have a card with Edd's name on it. At the time I was WAY overwhelmed and got my ass kicked in some of the best training I've ever had. Hindsight is 2020, Edd taught me skills that has since saved my 6, but prior and at the time I knew jack shit. The question stands, how do you know your instructor is legit before, during, and afterwards?

I'd be for a course for using DPVs, but also a minimum standard for instrumentation built into a DPV (headlamp, compass, depth, available energy remaining).

Yes read comment above addressing this. It’s not cut off on the zoom version so not sure why when it was uploaded that cut off. Gus simply uploaded the zoom version but for some unknown reason it cut off. The ending will be uploaded soon.

I was taught to hand hold the crotch strap of the diver towing me. (And while I didn’t love the idea; I know a diver that clipped their nose cone to a buddies crotch strap, which put enough strain on the dpv between the two divers to stretch the strap and separate the o-ring causing a flood) all that to ask: Do you clip the nose of the inoperable dpv to the towing divers crotch strap, or do you use a tow strap direct from harness to harness?

Before the video I said, "in open water yes in a cave no". I have not changed my mind. I'm cave certified but not DPV trained. If you gave me a DPV at the cave I wouldn't use it.

Mehdi, Kudos! Like with many things in life, it's the growth mindset that makes the difference. Why not having a class, why not having fun? For the cost of it? Then better get another hobby.

I don't get it how people can have ego in such activities like cave diving. It's like playing with fire ans even if you're not burnt you're just lucky. Since all these legend instructor exist why not utilize them? If I had the time and money I would do full course certifications with Edd and all other instructors.

Let's imagine here an hipotetical situation, guy with money and not that great skill, or DPV certification buys one of those Yamaha scooters, he goes for a deep dive in open sea, let's say 100 feet /30 meters, he conects the DPV to him, we all know the tendency while diving to loose objects, and for some reason he does not control the DPV that propels him to the surface at prohibitive speed, I once saw here in DIvetalk someone that "being a OWD" made the mistake of fully inflate her BCD while ascending and came to the surface like a baloon, so I do believe that everything, even the most absurd, can happen, so yes, certifications can save people from deadly accidents.

I think you need to know as much in cave diving as you do in going to the moon as an astronaut. Both environments are the equivalent in their lethality for those do don’t know what they don’t know.
