Emergency Medicine Dr. J Mack Slaughter joins the Glaucomfleckens to talk about his life before he got into medicine, touring the nation as a singer in a boy band (Sons of Harmony) and getting the opportunity to open for Destiny’s Child. He then goes into how he found medicine, how chasing prestige can be detrimental to your mental health, and the time he treated a patient who cut off his own penis! Lastly, Dr. J Mack talks about his program Music Meets Medicine and how his lives in entertainment and medicine were able to be combined.

Man this guy is so bubbly. He gives off a 5-year old playing with puppies kind of vibes. I’d love having him as a doctor if I was stuck in the hospital. 😊

@@ethanyoung9927 correct! Haha I have adhd and my ER placement as a med student was my absolute favourite. The one time the outside environment matches what’s inside my head… it’s oddly calming. Finally at one with the world.

Anyone else picture Dr Mack in biking gear and sunglasses? He definitely fits the energy profile of an ER doc. Great interview with a lovely human being.

My grandpa loved listening to 50s music on headphones when he was in the nursing home. It lifted his spirits and he remembered lyrics he hadn't heard in decades. The music and medicine connection is a great one!

As a former violinist, who sat as Principal Violinist in several orchestras- yep. You nailed that one as "most arrogant musician in an orchestra" is 100% correct, lol.

Waiking up and putting dress pants on is so close to the only sleepwalking episode I know of! I had a concert with my orchestra in 2 days, and it was 1/2 major events in our schedule, my most favourite one, I loved it. And that night mom found me putting my dress pants and shirt on. I told mom that it was the concert day, and I had to go, the others were waiting for me. She had to convince me the concert was in 2 days, because I refused to go back to sleep

Firstly, I love the show. Secondly, because musical specialities is the kind of thought experiment that I love: Neurologist: Xylophone played with reflex hammers Ortho: Big Drummer Energy Cardiologist: Kettle Drums General Surgeon: Electric Guitar, of course Radiology: Keyboardist Neurosurgeon: Norwegian Nyckelharpa, because it's weird and hard to play, which affirms his superiority Family Medicine: Harp (it's painful to play and shreds your hands, but it makes beautiful music) Paediatrics: Otamatone Opthamology: Jonathan plays 9 or more instruments and serenades him while he works

i'd say harp for anaesthesia for sweet dreams and contrabass for pathology cos without them it doesn't vibe ❤

My cousin's daughter sleptwalked into the roomwhere we were up talking quietly. She bent down, stuck her finger into a large potted plant and said "I'm stuck". 😂 Had to go help her to lay back down.

What a chippery doctor! I wouldn't mind that, when I'm in the ER. So far (and thankfully rarely) I only got quiet friendly ppl and grumpy annoyed ppl who kind of grumbled why the heck I'm there or why at this late hour when the doctors went home (cause in Germany, doctors do get to live more). 😅 Thankfully the one time I was there for a serious issue and needed a ureter re-implantation, I literally did not know I was having an emergency. I was still sore from the previous surgery a month ago, which triggered said problem and hadn't been spotted earlier (not, due to lack of doctors trying. I got checkups. It was just sneaky!). But other than that and having a big belly regardless of my very tiny build, I was completely fine. No pain. Just the sloshing of the fluids if I drank a lot at once. I had mistaken it for the remnants of surgery gas, that can take a month to get re-absorbed! Everyone was so concerned over me n my kidney, but I would waddle around for more tea and help other patients while waiting for my surgery (which failed after 15 minutes and the big one getting postponed to 3 days later to avoid the weekend). They were worried about me getting fevers, which made me laugh. Cause 1) I rarely get those since I've gown out of my fever-ish childhood and 2) I had been like this for a whole month, so why should I develop a fever now, of all the times? Either way: It would have been very hilarious to have had Dr. Slaughter around for these episodes!

Hi! Im eager to see this new episode. Would you be open to having a medical historian on? Patrick Kelly (channel name) has so many interesting topics you all could talk about! And his name is even more Irish than Will Flannery.

I used to sleepwalk so much my mom almost sent in a note to document it because she was worried I'd go somewhere and get in trouble while dorming on campus. I eventually commuted to school.

The drums are the coolest band member, so I'll take Ortho as the drums because Ortho is the coolest specialty; Cardiology is 100% trumpet; Nephrologist, woodwind all the way; Anesthesiology I think is timpani or an instrument with long breaks in the score, because of all the sitting around they do; Ophthalmology matches triangle for sure - doing one thing really well; General and the pipe organ is a good choice, super old school and skilled for a number of things, in a very specific setting

It may be worth seeing a sleep specialist if this bothers you! A sleep study might be able to reveal more of whats going on. There is research related to cardiac issues with sleep apnoea as well.

Clearly the vascular surgeon plays the pipe organ, while the neurosurgeon plays the electric organ.

How does a lateral canthotomy heal? Like, if I understood Dr. Glaucomflecken's explanation properly, if you're making an incision into the lower lateral eyelid then how does that eyelid reattach to the structures surrounding it after the procedure?
