Gotten sun burned a once or twice. Showers afterwords was a literal pain. Skin was peeling off and had stop going the surfing class that caused the sun burn in first place. Been a long time since it happened. I don’t regularly wear sun screen, but i do throw on a sweater to help block the sun. Only exposed part is face and hands. Recently went out without sweater and instantly regretted it. I could feel pain from the sun the moment i stepped outside. Stuck to shade as much as i could.

My mother was clearly a dermatologist in a previous life. As a small child, when all the other kids in the street were outside running around under the sprinklers in their togs (bathing suits) in Summer, I was put outside of the house in a neck-to-knees outfit of her design and making, in a lovely floral print, complete with lace around the sleeves (that came to the elbows) and legs. The whole outfit was completed with an enormous wide-brimmed mop cap (also trimmed with lace). To finish off, my face was caked with zinc cream. Pink, of course. It absolutely had to be pink. Because she worried that if she'd used blue on a girl, the other kids might tease me... I became intimately acquainted with social death by the age of four.

I actually found some recommendations to expose large areas of your skin (like hands, arms and face, or the legs) without sunscreen to the sun for 5-30 minutes (depending on your complexion, if you’re dark skinned it's more) daily/a couple times a week for vitamin D production, between the times of 11 am and 3 pm. Doesn’t match with your UVI numbers or times though. I'm still curious.

I somehow doubt that. There are dermatologists who say that you should wear sunscreen even indoors because light will reflect off the walls of the house (Dr. Dray on RU-vid being one of them). As a non-dermatologist, I often go outdoors without sunscreen, but I think that any dermatologist who says you can go outdoors without sunscreen at any time of day would be excommunicated and ostracized by the dermatology community.

Entirely depends on where you live. Sometimes the sun is barely up at 9. Also, time zones mean time or the sun can lagg behind 30 minutes or more. In summer, where I live, the sun is at its highest at 1.40 pm. Meaning you can easily get a sunburn at 4 pm, but not so quickly at 10 am. They warn mostly about between midday and 3 pm because of it. 9 and 3 would only be most intense if you live somewhere where time aligns perfectly with the sun.

As the mother of three redheads, I must attest that this is not that far from the truth for some of us in the population. (Minus the medical jargon, of course!). When not in the water or such, my family is huddled in whatever shade we can find or make for ourselves, desperately trying to avoid direct sun at all costs for fear of bursting into flames. And then we go inside for the peak hours of the day. All the while observing the rest of the world pretty much doing the exact opposite. I'm sure people think we're insane!

Kelda I hear you! Just spent a week in the Florida Keys. Lived in my dive skin & wide brimmed hat for the most part. Protecting my delicate British Isles ancestral skin was a full time job. I did alright, only getting pink on top of my hands due to one day failing to lotion up those small uncovered bits with the zinc oxide cream while kayaking. Dive skins are like a full body leotard and have the added bit of firming up all the jiggly bits so you look more toned - LOL oddly sexy & geeky at the same time!

Funny but true. I live in the PNW, where we're know for our rainy, foggy, dreary winters yet also we have an extremely high rate of skin cancer from the reflective powers even dim sunlight off of all the water here. While waiting for a friend to get biopsies completed to remove suspicious spots, I had the most informative conversation with another patient's support person, the wife of a head doctor (at the time) of a well known university's hospital's dermatology clinic who schooled me well about protecting your skin even in areas you wouldn't automatically think you'd be in danger. The Sun's power is strong...protect yourself.

By the end of my honeymoon in the Bahamas I looked even MORE pale than I already am because the constant use of mineral sunscreen left a nice white sheen on my body 😆. Sarah, try a dive skin. It covers from wrists to neckline and all the way down to your ankles. Best invention ever & no washing sunscreen off every body part at the end of the day. Also looks very sleek & sexy as it's firming in all the right ways while protecting your beautiful skin. No more pasty skin creams for me if I'm going swimming or doing water sports. It's like a scuba suit but super thin like a leotard. Wore it all day in full sun each day for a week in the Florida Keys while swimming, snorkeling & kayaking and only got pink on tops of my hands when I failed to lotion up my hands one day. It's been worth every penny! You can buy them at dive shops or probably Amazon. 😊

And ALWAYS use more than you think you have to, because you really do have to apply that much. Thicker coating is better than thin. Don’t scrimp on sunscreen application. If you’re going to be out in the sun it’s a essential. - Not dermatology, but has similar thoughts 😁

@reddragonflyxx657
@reddragonflyxx657 2 года назад
SPF is a bad metric. It doesn't measure UVA blocking, longevity of protection, or ease of proper application. Several countries banned high SPF ratings because it's considered misleading. I'd look for something in the 30 to 50 SPF range that's comfortable, gentle on skin, and easy to use if I wasn't a vampire who rarely needs it. If you're worried about indoor UV (lots of people don't like gradual fading of furniture) there are window films available. Clothing and shade sources can help a lot too (parasols are the best in summer). I'm iffy on wearing anything on the skin every day, especially if it's from a company that labels their products with misleading SPF ratings. Of course that's your right to choose, but I suggest looking into other factors.
@katydid5088
@katydid5088 2 года назад
@@reddragonflyxx657 well, given that most people don't apply enough spf, 50 to 50+ is a good thing to have on as a singular step. But, I agree that so far as spf goes uva protection is best mitigated by other means on top of the initial layer of sunscreen with reapplication as recommended. But, of course, this is coming from someone who has family with sun allergy (not just photosensitivty) and an incurrent risk of skin cancer from the other side. Most regular sunscreens don't provide enough uva protection so you have to seek out ones specifically formulated to exceed the labeled uva/uvb protection required by most countries. Go Australian sunscreens, go!😁

@@katydid5088 Very interesting, I'll keep that in mind when it's time to revisit the surface world, my sunscreen stock is a bit small ;) The bit about Australian sunscreen reminds me of some toothpaste research I've done. When it comes to mineralization abd sensitivity the rough order of effectiveness is MFP, NaF2 (common fluoride) < SnF2 (stannous fluoride) < CSPS (NovaMin®, bioactive glass), nHAp (hydroxyapatite). Of these, CSPS seems to be licensed for sale outside of the US, and the nHAp products with published research aren't targeted at the US market either.
