Dr Chee Soon Juan is the Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and one of the most respected and feared opposition leaders in Singapore, so it was a little inexplicable when he decided to start up a restaurant, "Orange & Teal". Singapore's food & beverage industry is notoriously difficult and competitive, and on top of this he started his venture in June 2021 in the middle of the covid pandemic! PJ Thum visited his restaurant to talk to him about why he started Orange & Teal, his experience in his first year, and what he hopes to achieve. They also talk about the future of Singapore, his vision for the SDP, and its changing perceptions and role in Singapore politics.

Yes I know. His employment was terminated without good reason. Dr Vassoo can write his book and explain why he and his boss did that.

@@rslin4888 If he did that he would not do any harm to anyone except for himself. But I will not advocate that as it is not a suitable method for him to win the battle against the PAP. So why are you afraid of his hunger strike? Similar to my way of thinking?

Sometimes things are no always directly related. Being good in mathematics and music, helps a strengthen a legal mind. Running to run faster isn't good training for running, strength training helps tremendously. Operating a F&B business, helps focusing on people's wants and needs. Get that right and success will follow. Politics is all about people, not just dramatic performance in Parliament.

Just see how Dr Chee analyzed the current situation and how he articulated his solution and vision. That's really inspiring Dr Chee. Dr Cbee really should be in parliament to offer the policies and program that SDP had researched and posted in their webpage for a long time been saying but imitated by the current day government. With the suite of policies that SDP had researched, i believe Dr Chee can make a difference in shaping a better future for Singapore as he does not have the group thinking that is so prevalent and dominant in the current set of leaders.

My own views: Govt must seriously build a large pool of local talents, demolish unfair hiring practices to ensure that qualified & deserving locals hv a chance of getting a good career (not just get any job just to survive eg grab delivery), and give us hope, that our children and their children will also have a better chance at success in our own country.

There is no reason why we need to rely on the government to be talented Singaporeans. Just take a look at our local football team, it 100% Singaporeans and even we have tried Singapore coaches. What is the outcome?

@@rslin4888 So all the more reason to use the best men for the job and that means that govt should include people outside the PAP. I disagree that the best people are only found in the PAP . I suspect that PAP's camp consists of yes men with consensus thinking which only mean that the country remains frozen in time. This is disastrous for any country in a changing world.

when malaysians and other foreigners transfers $2500 to their country , the value becomes around $7500 in their country because their low cost of living , no coe , erp , gst , blah blah and much more when singaporeans makes $2500 in singapore , the value becomes around $1500 due to high cost of living , pap policies with coe , erp , gst and much much much more . pap makes sure that your salary never match inflation , cost of living make sure u remain poor all your life .joseph even suggest u lives in studio hdb with your family while she and her pap continues to live in villas and bungalows , this have been pap policy for decades .

Need to also review the education system (why so many teenagers end up in the ITEs, while foreigners from 3rd world nations can flood in to fill PMET jobs? Our education system is questionable bcos This imbalance is surely going to create hardship & poverty for more local families, and the vicious cycle will continue, in the future putting a lot of pressure on social welfare support to support poor families.

Singapore can be less reliant on foreigners and foreign skills and technology if Singaporean decide that they would rather be small fish in a small pond instead of small fish in a big ocean. One of the most successful local companies are perhaps DBS and SIA, and they are both GLCs. As for SEA, founder Forrest Li he is China-born.

With Chee’s policy and ideas, he will make Singapore into another Argentina less all the natural resources. Argentina was one of the richest country in the world in the 40s. Than, politicians in order to win vote promised to give welfare and free stuffs. Now, Argentina is doing badly and with volatile currency but with mass of natural resources. After so many years, Argentina still cannot recover. What do you think Singapore a country with no natural resources at all?

Did not read his books but find at that time if I remember correctly the news why he was charged too ridiculous. They were calculating petty transport and mailing cost to bring charges against him.
