How are they holding up?
Comparing an eight month old set of DR Neon Pink coated bass guitar strings to the same strings the day they were installed on a Sire Gen 2 V7 active jazz bass. Bass clips were recorded direct with a touch of compression from a Diamond BCP1 Bass Compressor. The DR neon coated strings are nickel plated steel roundwounds and offered in a bunch of cool colors. The coating affects the tone of the strings, but it also affects the feel, and after trying them I still prefer the DR Fat Beam set, which is my favorite round wound string for bass.

Yeah listening back they do record really nicely. My daughter still likes them and hasn't asked to change them.

I love my DR strings, especially the Black Beauty's. All 4 of my basd guitars have a set of either DR Neons or Black Beauty's. I like the way they feel, they don't tear up my fingers and I like the sound.

I had black coated DRs on my first bass and this video sounds exactly like them! I don't play that bass as much anymore since I have become a big fan of Kallium Hybrid strings. They have the bite of stainless steel, but with a softer nickel stainless hybrid winding. Which helps it maintain versatility in either direction and helps with comfortable playing.

I wasn't familiar with Kallium strings. Just pulled up there website -- interesting gauges. Thanks for the info, Kyle.

I've used this strings for a month now and it's just fine, they sound worse than normal strings and feel worse aswell, but not that much, if you like or need color it's worth it, but not for having it for a long time, just for some video or show, colors look great irl

Great video. I have the red version of those DRs and my Sire V9 right now. Recently I noticed a kind of 60 cycle hum when touching the strings, and just read a piece by Roger Sadowsky about the lack of conductivity on these kind of strings (for the most part). I've never really been sure of them tone wise either. They sound quite aggressive and lack definition, but they sound ok in a mix. Like you I use DR Highbeams and I have a set I'm likely to put on this weekend. I have used them for about 2 months at this point.

@hoganshideout Год назад
Hey thanks for the comments Joanna! Yeah I remember reading where Sadowsky talked about coated strings and grounding -- makes sense. I do really like Hi Beams or Fat Beams, especially as they get a little age on them.

Try the Elixir coated strings if you don't like the stickiness or the Drs. The Elixirs are slippery. BTW, nice chops.

@hoganshideout Год назад
Thanks for the tip and for the compliment BasementStudio. I think I tried a set of Elixirs on a Taylor acoustic guitar years ago but don't remember anything about them. I'll definitely grab a set for bass and give them a try.

cool video! seems like you played more towards the bridge on the first recording though, that might have made the difference in tone.

I've got a set on my Epi EB3, they sound/play great but I wish DR would come out with a flatwound version (all my other basses have flatwounds)

I wonder if I would get more used to the feel if I played them exclusively for a while.

@@hoganshideout I wonder if the oils from your fingers are different from your daughters? Maybe a chemical thing. Great playing, by the way.
@hoganshideout
@hoganshideout Год назад
@@vidmooreda Possibly. I know when we were kids my brother would always wear out and rust strings faster than me so chemistry does make a difference. Thanks for the comment David.

I put black strings on my Ibanez 5 string not quite 2 months ago and the coating is already wearing off.

I'm enjoying the Black Beauties on my Jackson at the moment but I'm a drummer so strings are still fairly foreign to me lol. I think the sound is quite acceptable but you can hear the difference in your recording. Can't tell whether that's a bad thing or not myself but hey, it's good enough for funk baby! HAHAHA Thanks for the video, and exceptional chops my friend!!

Got DR coated bass strings a while back, the coating wore off in a month. Granted, I live in South India where humidity is high, but I loved how they sounded and felt when I used them!

I wonder if you got the ones without the K3 Coating the originals and first generation of these strings didn’t have the K3 coating ! DR themselves said the first edition coating would start to fade or chip in 20 mins in the factory with a 6 sided guitar pick wheel which they’d machine test & spin on the strings , the K3 coating lasted at least 180 continuous minutes of picks scratching it before any even change , and barely even then

The strings definitely deadened a bit but with the right amps and pedals you could stretch some more life out of them. Coated strings probably can't be boiled, right? I've Never seen a bass that color with those strings looks and sound so good before. Really adds a personal touch. :)
@hoganshideout
@hoganshideout Год назад
Hey, thanks for the comment. I have never tried to boil coated strings, but I used to boil Rotosounds all the time, back in the day :). It works!
