DR Congo's faltering fight against illegal cobalt mines | AFP

Five thousand diggers pack tightly together at the bottom of a crater in southeastern DR Congo, swinging hammers and picks to prise chunks of speckled blue-gold ore from the earth. The huge pit in Shabara, about 45 kilometres (30 miles) from Kolwezi, is home to cobalt - a strategic metal found in abundance in the impoverished central African nation. But it's also emblematic of a headache. The mining has been carrying on for years in flagrant violation of DRC laws and in defiance of the site's owner, a subsidiary of mining and commodities giant Glencore.

This is the slavery the Left doesn’t want you to see. Fossil fuels have nothing on the “Green Agenda”. Acquiring the raw materials is just the first step in a massive complex process of poisoning the planet. Refining this material, producing a product (solar panel, battery, etc), then disposing of the spent product after its lost its usefulness, which is only a few years mind you…..all are WAY more toxic to our environment than diesel, gasoline, propane, natural gas, coal, or cow farts. I had an iPhone 13 Pro Max that had a completely shattered screen and the phone didn’t work at all. When I went to Verizon to file an insurance claim on it they said they’d give me an $830 trade in value for it. I was confused as to why and then I remembered the batteries are lithium and my battery wasn’t damaged at all. It’s crazy how valuable it is. This is slavery. Companies like Apple buy lithium from these mines. It’s disgusting. I’m angered by it but I still bought an iPhone 15 Pro Max because they gave me $830 off. Just about everyone of us commenting on this video enables it by continuously buying the products that comes from it. I’m 100% guilty too. It’s a sad world we live in. I love my iPhone. I love my iPad. I love my AirPods and I’m sure everyone else who has them does too. It’s sick a multi billion dollar company will cheap out to the point of slavery.

What you see in this video is thousands of men and boys being paid $4 per day which adds up to a bigger cost than using trucks and machinery. This is not cheap labor. The Congo government stipulates manual labor is used and they are paid $4 per day. $4 goes a long way in the Congo unlike America where $4 buys you nothing.

It’s easy to look at it from my perspective living in a first world country and feel like it’s terrible working conditions but in a lot of African countries this is standard type working conditions/roles. I think you’re trying to turn my original comment into something more than it is. If that’s all that they know, they’re making the best out of a bad situation. Their government is the real problem, most African countries should be economically well off due to the large amounts of natural resources. But they’re extremely corrupt and violent towards their own citizens. Try again 😉 I’m not the one.

Governments are just a big business, and alot of multinational companies are wealthier that most countries so you can imagine the power and influence they have. Corruption is rife.
