The Real TraderTom
This is a tribute to the most amazing friend and mentor - Dr David Paul. David passed away peacefully on the 31st of July 2023.
David was without a doubt the most unique human being I have ever come across in the arena of trading. He taught me to add to my winning trades. “Press the winners”, I can hear him shout at me. It was a priceless piece of wisdom, one which I practise whenever the market begins to trend.
I shared a stage with David Paul at the Price Action Symposium in London in April 2022. It was a star-studded event with the likes of Larry Pesavento, Steve Ward and Al Brooks teaching. The whole event, which lasted 3 days, was captured by a film crew.
David was relentless in his commitment to his vocation, and it was matched by his commitment to help others trade well. Therefore, in honour of David, I am releasing all the video material of David from the London show in 2022 on RU-vid. There are 3 videos in total.
Rest in peace my dear friend. You were a legend alive, and you are a legend now. Your wisdom will help people all over the world navigate the markets with more conviction and better tools. Thank you for everything you did for so many aspiring and professional traders.

I was particularly struck by this statement: "It is my conclusion after 40 years at this that we don't really trade markets at all. We trade our beliefs about markets, and everybody's beliefs about markets are different". Absolutely profound and well worth pondering.

I just got to know about Dr Paul last year through a RU-vid video. It was an interview he had given for a publication and that that one interview I saw was an absolute game changer (for real). And as I hear this news now, I naturally got a tear in my eye, like as if I knew him or have been following him for a longtime. That's the kind of impact he and his words had on me. "If your entry is sloppy, then your stoploss has got to be a red bus away. The stop needs to be where the stop needs to be." - Dr David Paul

@@Tatang-e1c for example After analysis, Suppose you wanted to buy a stock at a 100 bucks and your stoploss is 90, and due to reasons like confirmation or less confidence, you don't buy it at 100, you end up buying it at 120. Then your stoploss won't be 110, it will and should be at 90 (because you have analysed that 90 is the best stoploss level). All that changes is the position size of the trade. You may trade a lower size than what you would have if you had bought it at 100. You trade a size equal to the risk of your trade. This way you will build a habit of being disciplined and not going against the rulebook. Lemme know if you need better explanation...

@@Tatang-e1c For example, suppose, you analyse a stock's price and want to buy it at 100 and keep your stoploss at 90. But due to reasons like less confidence or anything else, you end up buying it at 120. Then here, your stoploss does not shift to 110, it should and will remain at 90 (because that is the best stoploss according to your analysis). The only thing that will change is your position size of the trade. You may trade a lesser size than what you would have at 100 bucks. In this way you do not deviate from your analysis and will remain disciplined and less emotional. Trade the size equal to your risk. This is the core of risk management.

I worked with him in Rivonia, South Africa for 3 years and he was a superb mentor and my time with Share Direct was hugely impacted directly by David. I loved his lesson about risk and risk management which he described using a toss of a coin. Thank you Dr David Paul for all the laughs and lessons. A father figure to many in the industry. I was blessed enough to stumble across one of David Paul's video's yesteday. It's the one on RU-vid called "Four mistakes preventing consistent market gains" - David Paul. After hearing his ideas...ESPECIALLY the idea of taking positions at your stop targets, I was INSTANTLY sold on his obvious depth of understanding of the markets. I was heart broken to hear he's no longer with us, however I'm forever grateful for the sage wisdom he's left behind.

the biggest win we could wittness is this man speaking his wise words loud so everybody could learn from them, he is such a incredible personality and even though i only knew him threw his teachings i will always remember him as a man that choose to help others with his experience in a world where he didnt had to but he did so from pure heart may this legend rest in peace

Oh my god! I am so so sorry to hear this news. I met Dr David Paul at many conferences, exhibitions and seminars. He was one in a million. A very unique way of presenting and I will never forget so so many of his presentations! This is very sadenning and his smile and presence will be missed. He captured audiences like no other. His passion was immense. May he long rest in peace

I was listening to Dr D at the VV weekly Q&A on the 10th July - 3 weeks before he passed! I was stunned when I read the news on the VV website that he had passed on 31/7/23; I felt quite bereft and still do. I never met Dr D but listened to him nearly every Monday pm and often chatted with him online about various aspects of trading. He was incredibly knowledgeable- and funny at times - and one could learn every time on listened to Dr D. Thanks Tom for sharing this video - much appreciated.

Thanks Tom for this enormous gift ! A few years ago, David said in an interview : "I win because I put my entries at the place you put your stop-loss" . I have this sentence in my mind every day since, and completely changed my view of trading. I am so sad he passed away, but nothing compared to your feeling.
