@Big Obungus I do indeed apologise my dearest of fellows. Please do forgive my person for this incorrigible fallacy on my end. Clearly I am not utilising the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. Jolly good day old chap and god save her majesty the Queen!
Hugh Laurie can't remember any of the medical information he recited on house. In one ear and out the other ... not useful information for his day to day life.
Psychologist here. I've had more than one client with alcohol-induced Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome. That's not that far off from what it's really like. It's really cool, but really creepy.
maybe a stupid question, but what does a psychologist even do with a person like that? isnt talking to them pretty useless because they can only make stuff up?
@@cembaturkemikkiran4109 mainly prolonged use in combination with bad diet. Alcoholics don’t get enough vitamin B1 (thiamine) in their food, which causes the disease
I love House’s extremely intimidating _”Yes?”_ at 2:55! It seems that when dealing with med students doctors, especially very talented doctors, really don’t like stupid questions. And she knew it!
@@cyanidesparkles Because he told her she was drawing attention to her boobs with her cleavage? If telling the truth makes you a piece of shit then we need more pieces of shit, not two faced fake "angels".
@@cyanidesparkles No, he's not a "yes" person. His view is 'you came to us for help to heal your body' if you're looking for empathy go to a priest or a nurse.
@@jimpink7245 Flawed view btw. Even with his brilliance, he's only tolerable because people know he's in physical pain. Don't get me wrong I love House
Mmm, the symptoms she's experiencing are fairly involuntary. She's papering over gaps in her memory not really accessing the same parts of the brain as imagination. But I suppose she could be asked certain questions and she might tell a story that might be entertaining. But that's a bit exploitative.
I remember the whole class being told on the first day of prep. school “You were probably near the top of your class in high school. Get it through your head, here you are only average. Improve your game or you will fail.” House's attitude quickly separates the wheat from the chaff
The only issue is that korsakoff specifically results from permanent brain damage, so while wernicke’s could be reversed with vitamin b1 (also known as thiamine), korsakoff syndrome could not
Korsakoff Syndrome is also known as Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome the first part Wernicke's is reversible and Korsakoff isn't like you said however it is usually referred to as just Korsakoff Syndrome. When he said Korsakoff Syndrome he wasn't saying she had the irreversible Korsakoff part of it he was just referring to it by the more commonly used name.
Exactly, once it reaches to the stage of psychosis, namely korsakoff syndrome, they won’t be able to do anything. Her CVS system will Also be in shit, 6 months life expectancy
Actually this symptom of Korsakov syndrome is called confabulations which does start with a c. Also thiamine probably won’t help much as the damage to the mammillary bodies is already done. But she definitely needs it to prevent further decline.
@@iLastStar Thiamine would help any further damage happening, but the brain damage is essentially permanent. The brain may reform new synapses and pathways, but it's unlikely to recover completely. That's why whenever chronic alcoholics come to the emergency department they're assertively given thiamine to prevent wernicke's encephalitits and then the eventual Korsakov.
As a medico I was always amazed how well researched this show was. Always give thiamine first and then carbohydrates or the remaining thiamine can get used up, increasing severity.
Sir.Raphim Revelator Huh, so you’re saying you forgot about the show you used to watch, and then you saw this video and suddenly you remembered all about it? Ironic Tell me, what do you think of my bird pin and Ferris wheel clip board, does it remind you of how you broke your wrist?
Fun fact: the building in the opening shot is Frist Campus Center at Princeton University. I’ve always wondered why they chose there of all places to be the fictional hospital.
Probably because a school facility can be rented during the short off season relatively cheap. A public hospital is always crowded with really sick people. Hard to film in one of them.
I knew a patient at a hospital I worked at for a while, she got the same diagnosis, but would not admit to being an alcoholic. Years later I met her again and it turns out she had an inoperable cyst in her brain causing the symptoms.
@@bab00n15 It was a small town hospital so there wasn't a CT-scan on site, but when you have a 40 year old developing basically dementia you'd think they send her to a hospital that has one. Still don't know why they didn't.
House is the agent of truth. He is to a lot very unlikeable but he says things as it is and I like that. I wish we had more Houses in our society in every single field even if it hurt people's feelings.
Med school is an incredible experience, yeah all the technical stuff is a pain, but when you deal with patients or how some idiots call them(costumer) that's how you really learn
I suffer borderline disorder, PTSD, and anxiety disorder, I also always had great grudge over people who hurt me, my condition make it worse, because even little hars word can hurt me so bad, even the person who said it doesnt mean to, that make me WISH I had amnesia everytime I interact with people. Perfect Forgiveness.
All I can picture are the scenarios of just walking into her room with different objects and see how far and crazy I can take it, just to hear a different story each time.
There is not a single med student with a brain who would talk like that to their Instructor. You never ever, EVER talk back, complain or coment negatively on what they are doing or they could fail you or worse, they will remember you when it's time for your rezidentials and job interview. The instructors are usually heads of their departments and department heads usually last for a decade or two in their jobs so the guy you where a smartass too years ago will probably be your BOSS or the factor on whether you will or not GET A JOB. And when you are dealling with lying patients, stuborn patients, alcoholic patients and your most cooperative ones are usually with one foot in the grave, you do not want an insubordinate newbie making your day HARDER.
Sensitive, ain't cha? They questioned, not talked back. Also, if someone doesn't want their bullshit behavior called out on, then they shouldn't be doing it. Wow.
I worked with a patient with korsakov's He was hard work at times. If you said the wrong thing he would shut down on you. Luckily I could leave the room, return and start again. He was a good guy. Miss him.
@@Joseph-nh6in I think it might depend on how long someone has been drinking heavily rather than just age. And some people would be more susceptible if they are low in certain vitamins especially b1 to start with. Alcoholism is worse than any other addiction in my opinion. Korsakovs is only one of many bad outcomes.
korsakoff syndrome is irreversible, you can't just give thiamine. He was talking about Wernicke syndrome, which does not cause cognitive function decline.
My uncle was a severe alcoholic when I grew up also always hateful. One day I met with him not by choice and his memories were misplaced and swears completely about facts about our childhood things that were false with a hint of truth. My family had a dog a rottie and he thought we had 2 as a kid i fact we had 1 when I was barely an adult. It was interesting and sad how his mind was damaged by alcohol also he was trying to set me up with my aunt sexually at that point I left. Alcoholism is no joke.
Med students bein sassy to a world renowned doctor is something you never see...he could be playing tennis while listening to music and the med students are expected to continue telling the history....my professor would have tear me a new one if i ever said-"you are reading a comic book " or "cant you be nice"...
There is difference between your college in India than prestigious fictional Princeton-Plainsboro. Even AIIMS Delhi has no match to any Ivy League Med School!
@@amolkhobaragade the thing about "people" is that if you take out religion out of the equation they are pretty much the same everywhere...the difference in rank between house and med students almost guarantees he wont take any sassiness..you must be a mwd student to...watch dr. Yeah Indian boy, Your shitty "Universities" are no match to Ivy League Med Schools, Go shit all that curry in some street somewhere in India and leave the doctoring to real doctors.
People think house is mean but if most of the physicians on this show acted the way they do in a real setting. Theyd just be fired. There wouldn't be any fighting and eventually learning from their mistakes Obviously here they are students but the main cast is full of trained physicians. Their behaviour is down right ridiculous. House's attitude and behaviour almost seems like copeing from having to deal with horrible physicians everyday.
Yeah, I guess he meant that as a symptom and not the disease its self. The name of the condition, it starts with a "K", I cannot remember the name. Sounds Russian/Ukrainian. Confabulation is a manifestation of the condition.
Similar thing with engineering students who "have to slum it and come and work in a workshop with real techs/real work" while on a break . But they couldn''t learn anything from anyone hands on, as they were instilled with the "you know everything/you are the future thing" by their teachers. Until they didn't............ like when confronted with how ANYTHING actually works.......
Tbh, comparing those students to me and my colleagues at their age, they seem either pretty dumb or supposed to be on their 2nd/3rd year out of 6. If the latter is the case, then it's good they had a class with him so early.
They choose the character and behavior of the students, so House can be a smartass douche to them, and we'll still root for him. Writing. Same reason most patients on the show are idiots (in some variation). It's not really realistic, i mean the amount of testing they do on some cases alone, it's after all still a tv show. Pointing out where the show does not match our boring reality is a bit pointless.
I'm appalled at the fact that they couldn't recall her weight. It's at the very top of their charts in general statistics because nurses perform daily weights on short term in-patient units.
My dr friends say it bs, but I love the show anyway. By the way, how awesome is the actor whose name escapes me right now. Oh no! I better eat some cake.
Fun fact: supposedly one of the most medically accurate shows is Scrubs, a sitcom created by a doctor to make comedy out of what it's like to be an intern.
