Only an OCD sufferer can actually feel "brain lock". Very informative video. I pray no one gets OCD as it makes life hell. Fortunately, as Doctor says with neuroplasticity we can rewire the gearbox in the brain without getting any meds like uvox.

@@NadeemAhmed-nv2br I used to obsess one couple of things before and i started doing compulsions (this was in my early teens) and continued for years i didn't knew at the time what it was and i thought it was normal little did i know it was ocd i've struggled with absolutely stupid obsessions but it felt so real and i had to do the compulsions in order to ease some of the stress, until recently that something changed i don't know what it is but it seems that my ocd vanished which is quite alarming because this happened before and when ocd came it came really relentlessly but i am educating myself and trying to expose myself to the fear and so far i am managing it slowly but surely i think i can overcome it, until next thing comes, it's a constant battle and it's exhausting.

hanshotfirst1138 Poor you. :( That sounds scary indeed. Do you want to approach this problem in a scientific way or a spiritual one? Combining both can do wonders you know. :) If you by any change are spiritual however or are willing to not exclude it than I can advice you to watch a movie on RU-vid which is called Mindfulness, and is an interview hold by Dan Bradley, who interviews Shireen Chada, a meditative instructor in India. She has a very relaxing and simple to understand positive approach on life and the things that we can interpretate as negative in whichever form. You might want to start from there to rewire your own brain and fly over to different videos from there. Did this comment helped you? I do hope that it did.

I am 29 and have have severe OCD for over a decade. I resulted to sleeping in my car for over a year purely due to the inability to have an apartment. No one around me really know about my problem. I am distant and barely contact anyone so this ends up in my family thinking I am into criminal activity or hiding something, which is funny, but aggravates me too. My OCD is connected to my self-image and how I feel about myself. For instance, if I touch a trash can I view myself as trash or worthless. My body will react by getting hot, to the point that I started itching and feel light-headed. I am not worried about getting sick or anything like that. It is more so that to me certain events have an eternal energy and I want to avoid it. One more example... if someone who appears dirty or of bad character touches my shoulder during a greeting I will probably end up disposing that shirt. In my mind the person in question remains on my shirt. I realize it is crazy. You can watch my videos and see that I am normal... quirky, but normal. I hide it well, but inside it is a constant job stopping myself from suicide.

How on earth did people manage to turn a lecture/seminar, for those who suffer from OCD into a philosophy lesson? It's not that complex or complicated. I have OCD and I understand exactly what he's getting at. I think that most people who have OCD would have no trouble understanding this either. Why? Because they have OCD. And that is exactly who this seminar is for.
@trustinjesus1119
@trustinjesus1119 9 лет назад
I think everyone has OCD, you ever watch a person at a cross walk pushing the button to cross the street. They think it's a carnival attraction at the fair where you're squirting water into a tube to pump up your little character to victory. The more they push the button the faster they think the light is going to change, like the machine is calculating how many people are pushing the button, how many times the button is being pushed against the flow of traffic. OCD.
@titandragon753
@titandragon753 9 лет назад
TrustInJesus111 Sorry, OCD is an extremely painful and debilitating disorder. What you have just described is not OCD. Everybody does not suffer from OCD.
@trustinjesus1119
@trustinjesus1119 9 лет назад
Titan Dragon I'm bipolar and everyone suffers from bipolar. We all have mood swings and we are all more or less compulsive. I understood things a lot more clearly the day my spirit popped out of my body. I'm not trying to make light of your suffering, it's kind of universal. I have a friend that's a type 2 bipolar, and he has a plethora of other mental disorders, he's my behavioral therapist. He's a recovering drug addict like me too. The government chooses some of the most disabled people to offer us hope. I used to go to therapy group 3 times a week, all of the mental disorders I observed all seemed to blend together, and mostly all the people really need is love.
@titandragon753
@titandragon753 9 лет назад
+TrustInJesus111 No, not everybody has Bipolar or OCD. And actually I manage my OCD on my own, I spent many years working on that goal and achieved it on my own. We are all individuals, and until you actually KNOW someone personally. Then you have no place telling others what they do or do not have. OCD is an anxiety disorder, it has nothing to do with carnivals, pushing buttons or squirting water. I suggest that maybe you do a little research into OCD. It is far more complex than you obviously understand, and I'm sorry. But your initial comment is actually extremely insulting and making light of others suffering. Because if you TRULY knew what it is like to suffer from OCD, then you never would have made a statement like that in the first place.
@trustinjesus1119
@trustinjesus1119 9 лет назад

But even the active mind doesn't imply free will exists. The mind in and of itself is coerced through learned behavior (by reward and punishment). People need to be careful that they don't belive that free will exists just because the "brain" and the "mind" are considered sepearte.

This is truly life changing knowledge. It is absolutely priceless, and I don't say that lightly. As someone who's been dealing with extreme anxiety for a decade now, hearing a well respected Neuroscientist perfectly explain the difference between mind and brain, and the power of conscious attention to reshape our brain, is truly wholesome. THE FOUR STEPS Step 1: Relabel-Identify your deceptive brain messages and the uncomfortable sensations; call them what they really are. Step 2: Reframe-Change your perception of the importance of the deceptive brain messages; say why these thoughts, urges, and impulses keep bothering you: They are false brain messages (It’s not ME, it’s just my BRAIN!). Step 3: Refocus-Direct your attention toward an activity or mental process that is wholesome and productive-even while the false and deceptive urges, thoughts, impulses, and sensations are still present and bothering you. Step 4: Revalue-Clearly see the thoughts, urges, and impulses for what they are, simply sensations caused by deceptive brain messages that are not true and that have little to no value (they are something to dismiss, not focus on).

What if the universe is fundamentally informational (that is, computational)? Consciousness could definitely be a "process" instead of a static object. If that's the case, if what really sustains consciousness is a process, who's to say what other things can and cannot sustain consciousness? There's a vast difference between asking pertinent, inevitable questions and actually creating a fictional answer in order to feel safe.

Electromagnetic fields are effected and even created by other forces of nature certainly, e.g. gravity and Van Allen belt, this does not imply consciousness or awareness. Energy and matter are interelated, and in escence the same thing, acknowledging this does not lead to the conclusion that consciousness and/or awareness is at work.

Aww you've got me all worked up. I was finally going to get evidence and scientific theories for this thing. And then you smugly present Bruce Greyson's book as if it's any good or even science... Boy did you're credibility just flew out of the window.

Why do our brain or our own thoughts decieve us?
@iji_k
@iji_k 3 года назад
You can think of the brain as a computer with an operating system installed on it. This operating system does some things without user’s intervention (like fighting infections) and does other things by running user’s commands (like moving your body in a certain direction) The problem is we’re frequently sending poor instructions (like when staying in a bad position for long periods of time, which sends instructions to muscles to trigger and bones to realign and will cause all kinds of health problems long term if executed over and over) I used concrete examples, but this also happens with less obvious things that create habits (habits=repeated instructions). See 10:13 for some examples. So technically it’s not the machine deceiving us, it’s us deceiving ourselves through bad programming. That’s why we need to reprogram the brain by sending instructions aligned to our goals. Now you’re gonna ask how you can learn the programming language so that you can send excellent commands. Well... it seems we can only learn through observation and testing, because the user manual is lost or hidden or password protected or... idk In the video, Dr. Schwartz appears to know some of the instructions. Btw I’m interested in how to tell the brain to learn a foreign language because right now it’s obvious that the commands I’m sending to it are bugged with errors. Hope this helps. Sorry if it doesn’t.

Judge Rez I've been a Christian my whole life, and I'm 52 now. I thought I knew what my soul and spirit were but when my spirit popped out of my body when I was 38 years old it changed my life forever. We just don't understand what God has in store for us.

TrustInJesus111 Out of body experiences can and have been explained by neuroscience. Not fully, but well enough so that it's not a good excuse to postulate a soul.
@trustinjesus1119
@trustinjesus1119 9 лет назад
qorilla There are a lot of people who have life after death experiences where neuroscience can't play a part. For instance people struck by lightning and electricity where the consciousness is knocked out. People frozen to death. There are all kinds of corroborated out of body experiences like a person whose spirit floated through the floors of the hospital and then out on a ledge where there was a red sneaker and the lace was under the heel but the sneaker couldn't be seen from inside the hospital. The spirit covers the whole of human experience it accounts for all the data. You want to stay away from neuroscience that can only explain our bodies, there's more to know about us than just our bodies. Your commitment to neuroscience for instance can not be explained naturally by neuroscience.

TrustInJesus111 Nonsense. If I believed all stories of this level of credibility then I'd have to believe that people are regularly abducted by aliens, Bigfoot roams around the mountains, the Loch Ness Monster and Atlantis, the reptilian conspiracy. These and out of body ghost stories have the same level of evidence. Many extremely committed people would swear that all those above are also true. A critical thinker can't just take words like that. What you claim is empirically testable but nobody has ever scientifically confirmed it. It shouldn't be hard. Just do it in a controlled environment. Controlled is important. Someone lies down in a room, then his spirit comes out and goes into the neighboring room. There he reads a word and goes back into his body and says the word out loud. If anyone can demonstrate such a thing in controlled and validated circumstances that would be a discovery that would overturn basically every single thing in all science. The Nobel Prize would look like a dog's reward treat beside what this achievement would deserve. You don't seem to realize what an astounding earth shattering discovery this would be. Nobody has ever demonstrated anything even close to that.

You gave me examples? Now let me show you what you don't want to read: From scientific america (not great, but a example of a biological explanation). "Peace of Mind: Near-Death Experiences Now Found to Have Scientific Explanations " Check it out. And no, i dont see what i want to see, I see what is obviously true. There is no reason to believe consciousness is attributed to anything other than the brain. If it's proven true, i'd then admit to being wrong.

Omnipotent fantasy much. I was actually irritated by your claims to 'not a $cientologist', with comments not present on your channel, so the lay observer might not check this for veracity. So I got around that, to discover lo and behold, a propensity for you to post on $cientology pages, and on key $cientology issues, to mention $cientology relatively frequently, and to describe $cientology as 'we' on a couple of occasiond. Porky pies come all too eadily to accolytes of Hubbard.

Rofl. When did I say that it's because people dont want "to die"? Certianly this is one reason why people DO act, but hardly the only! In many cases it does matter when it comes down to life or death situations. And you keep saying im trying to "suppress the truth" and all that but you don't realize that you haven't ONCE pointed me at any kind of science that supports your world view. Not one!
@vidfreak56
@vidfreak56 11 лет назад
ROFL let me correct you. So far, you: 0 me: 1. I have posted an actual series of scientific examples against life after death, and you just keep posting videos of self proclaimed "scientists" opinions on how to think about all of it in the first place. LOL it's no different than me posting a video of Sam Harris and saying, "see he said it so it must be right!". Again SHOW ME A PEER REVIEWED PAPERS IN A JOURNAL!

You don't seek truth. Science is the path to truth and you've all ready told me that clearly things beyond science exist. You therefore deny the very tool needed to understand what it is you're actually experiencing. Near death experiences aren't evidene of consciousness after death. Show me one example of this. And "too defunct" may have been a false positive. Isn't that possible? That enough function existed for a person to recall events while they were unconscious?

I don't recall anyone at CERN asserting that the Higgs boson is responsible for consciousness, and it is hypothesised as the key component that gives matter substance. Not that the Higgs Boson has conclusively been discovered of course, the experimental data must be confirmed before that claim can be emphatically made. I see no logical reason to conclude that the cause of natural forces should be aware or conscious, or anything other than another natural force.
@transremaxculver
@transremaxculver 11 лет назад
May the force be with you. Still conjecture, forces exist, they interact, they can be made use of this does not lead logically to the conclusion of awareness. Chi, is a recognition that the human body has energy within it, and that this interacts with other forces such as air and gravity(ie balance) this does not lead to defining Chi as conscious or aware. It might be nice to imagine it is so, but imagination does not equal evidence.
@transremaxculver
@transremaxculver 11 лет назад
That matter or energy does anything, does not give rise to the conclusion that it does so because of consciousness. Visible or invisible is irellevant, large or small energies are irellevant, there is no observable causal link that gives rise to the conclusion that consciousness, universal or otherwise is either present or influential. As to 'nothing' I presume you are refering to the known forces constants particles ect of the universe, which is an odd definition of 'nothing'.
@transremaxculver
@transremaxculver 11 лет назад
There is absolutely no evidence that consciousness makes any use of quantum states, let alone 'transforms quantum information'. And even if it did this would not give rise to the notion that the mind is seperate from the brain, only that the mind arrises as a product of the brain, using quantum mechanisms. There are too many holes in the reasoning, you turn suggestions into evidence, and draw unwarrented conclusions theinvented evidence wouldn't imply.
@vidfreak56
@vidfreak56 11 лет назад
The hilarious part of all of t his is that people think we can see and hear w/o eyes or ears! What's so funny about this is that evolution would never have had to develop either in the first place! We wouldn't need eyes to see because sight is something that exists outside the body (same with sound apparently). It's absurd.
@transremaxculver
@transremaxculver 11 лет назад
I can find no peer reviewed research to suggest any evidence for a link between quantum mechanics and consciousness, though I confess there is a certain intuitive connection between the complexity of the human brain and the data storage capacity of quantum computing. I also know of no empirical evidence to support the conclusion of conscious energy fields, or consciousness as a basis of matter. I think you best provide evidence for this assertion, a reference or two.

By incentives I mean "a thing that motivates or encourages". We all need these things to act. All that people need to do in any conversation, is simply look up words. I have no problem believing in discipline. I just have a problem with people who think they "just did" something. As if they had no reason to act and just did it because they can control their own brains. That notion of free will is quite illogical and impossible. You act for reasons. Conscious and unconscious.
