Heraldry and the achievements of arms that exist within it were a vital element of the visual landscape of our ancestors. We still rely on these things to shape our national, personal and professional identities - but do we still recognise and understand them fully?

Good morning. I would like to thank you for your presentation of the Royal Arms of Her Majesty The Queen in Right of the United Kingdom. If you ever have the time, I would be interested in viewing a presentation on the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom in use for Scotland and a presentation of the Royal Arms of Her Majesty The Queen in Right of Canada. Thank you.

Thank you for breaking this down, I hadn’t really known the origin of this nor had I realized the details within it.

My eye has always been drawn to the chained unicorn in the royal arms. Something about the crown around its neck told me there was more to it than mere royal decoration. Thank you for sharing that beautiful insight. It’s one of those things I’ve wondered silently to myself for many years. It was worth the wait hearing your lovely explanation.

Great - watching this on a week where the UK bank holiday has changed from the usual Monday to Friday so that it coincides with VE day. Would be interested in the history of the co-opting of previous feast days and holidays as political propaganda or method for public indoctrination. Discussion on if, why and how various holidays were purposefully overlapped.

I started watching the Crown but I still can't finish it , because I began to have too many questions in my head. So now I'm obsessed with the Plantagenets and Tudors. One day I'll go back to the Crown 👑. Thanks for your awesome videos

In Boston at the Old State House that is downtown (where the Boston Massacre took place), there a lion and a unicorn on top of the building. When I pass by the building next, I'll have to see if the lion is wearing a crown and if the unicorn is chained! Even in modern America, there are tiny bits of ancient England still there. :)

Thank you for explaining the absence of Welsh iconography/symbolosm! This was fascinating. I always noticed the Tudor Rose (how could one not?) but never noticed the Clover or Thistle. I'm wondering why the Tudor Rose is present when the current House were renamed "Windsor"?

“Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense” has much in common with Modern French, and so, with the exception of the first word (which I must guess at) means “ [shamed be he (or they)] who think ill of this”..... something else to research!! :)

Hello Dr Kat thanks for this video I am learning so much with each video Queen Anne to me is most interesting Queen to learn about and its a shame she is not talked about more I always wondered how and why Anne was not remembered it breaks my heart to know that sure she had her flaws but it only made her human she didn't just have gout she had a eye watering problem too it's amazing to me how queens can stand firm and not give an itch on what they believe in weather it's wrong or right it takes strong women to be queen so I heard they all have my respect for sure I would not be able to do what they had done ps I am watching each Friday with cat and dog sleeping on the couch with me lol hmming anything gets me a hairy eye ball anymore

I see some things differently. The unicorn represents the tribe of Ephraim, a company of nations, strength of a unicorn ( rhinosores in the Bible) the Lion represents King David s throne and the Harp represents that throne being overturned from Judah to Ireland. King David played the harp. Later it was overturned to Scotland, then to England. The main story is in the book of Jeremiah. A very blessed Commonwealth

One famous movie is "The Lion in Winter". The "lion" is Henry II played by Peter O'Toole and Anthony Hopkins as Richard Lionheart. The movie isn't exactly faithful to history but it's a great movie.

More like the Normans claim to England. Hence the fact that everything is written in French, and nothing in English.

To my knowledge, this is not something that has happened before. Titles have been stripped certainly but when it comes to arms the recourse for someone who has caused displeasure to the monarch is abatement. This is the alteration of the appearance of the achievement of arms.

If someone gets a chance to get an arms commissioned for my family (Like certain William Shakespeare did for his literary achievements), then what is the way? And consider: If they tried to commission something like: Purpure two Lions rampant Agent Armed and Langued Vert Will they get it? Or the achievement will decide the colors and charges? If I ever get my chance it will be Quarterly Vert Fretty Argent and Murrey/Purpure Fleury Argent for my achievements as a Biologist and my love for Nature.

Why did England use lions? Were there lions in England? Or does it have something to do with connection of Egypt and England? I have read that a great many people in England are related to King Tut. And that at one point in ancient history a princess from Egypt moved to England or Scotland.
@lynnedelacy2841

Sad Bunny I think it was more to do with the perceived nature of the lion itself - strong, brave , powerful etc

As I am Welsh, I have always been offended by the dismissal of the symbols of Wales from the Royal coat of arms. No Dragon in the shield’s 4th quarter, no daffodil on the vine. Elizabeth II had all 4 plants embroidered on her coronation gown so why can’t it be changed? It is insulting especially in light of the continuing assignment of the Heir as the Prince of Wales. If the English don’t appreciate us enough to even acknowledge our existence and contributions, then just bloody give it back!!!
@janiced9960
@janiced9960 3 года назад
All well and good. Very interesting, as always ,but where in all this is WALES. I am so tired of Wales counting for nothing. It is about time this was revised and Wales Has some recognition that it does exist. Our flag has been voted, arguably, the best in the world. I consider the current arms of the UK an insult to the Welsh people. I've never painted road signs green but I am cross.

I think the chain on Scotland's Unicorn is a note to the nation feeling chained to England. Showing such a fine and noble beast as the Unicorn chained surely must be wrong and I think it is a way for Scotland to assert its separation from England. My idea runs deeper than that but, I am struggling to find the right words.

When doing research on my family tree, my ancestor, Sir Richard Fowler, became "Sir" on the battlefield of Acre, when he was knighted by King Richard, the Lionheart. Evidently because of his vigilance during one evening, he noticed that Saladin's men were coming to kill the king and he was able to alert the king and sleeping camp and save the king's life. Due to his actions, it has been written that the King knighted him on the field of battle thereafter, and redesigned by his own hand a family crest for the Fowler family changing a hand and lure to a vigilant owl ~ and added the words ~ "King Richard changed it to Sapiens qui vigilat: He is wise who watches." I want to know ~ if this is the usual thing ~ as it seems odd to me, although I can see if someone saves your life and your army, you might want to do just that ~ as a grande gesture of thanks? But I was wondering how did families get their family crest, if a king were not making one or changing one for them. Did one just make their own and put things on their crest that had meaning to them? Could they just decide what badges to create? Seems like there would have to be some truth to what you were displaying, and you just couldn't go around making things up to make yourself look good. The Fowler family crest is very much tied to the actions that Richard Fowler took that night to save the King's life, ~ one event; one achievement, I guess you would say. I have seen earlier coats of arms and crest with foxes on them, as they were from Foxley, so I guess they can change, but who decides how they change? To change our names, we have to do it legally, so did they have to legally change their crests, badges and coats of arms? Thank you! I so enjoy every one of your videos! They are just absolutely wonderful, and I thank you so much!!! We are all learning so much "Reading the Past" with you!!!
