I have a patient who is 10 years old, where the seeds of autoimmune encephalitis were set very early but they were not recognized by his pediatrician for years.
Once I got the history from the family, I realized the immune dysfunction started early - the raging and extreme anxiety, tic behavior started around the age of 4. He was unfortunately sent to a psychiatrist and other physicians who did not believe or understand the diagnosis.
And finally at age 8, they found a PANDAS physician who ordered the Cunningham Panel. He had four antibodies positive and began intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment.
There’s a value to showing them, that you’ve got a physiological condition. You’ve got antibodies to tissue in your brain.
Sometimes, we’ll order the Cunningham Panel because they will say, “My mother, my parents don’t believe in this. They think that this is just a spoiled, ill-raised child.”
