David Mooney, Director of the Trauma Program at Boston Children's Hospital, tells us the 6 steps of sledding safety.
Slope - Pick a slope with no trees, poles, rocks or other exposed objects.
Snow - Avoid sledding on icy or hard packed snow. Snow that is light and fluffy will absorb impact better.
Sled - Choose a sled that has the ability to steer. Tubes are the most unsafe.
Sit - Sitting provides better stability and a better viewpoint to see obstructions.
Sun - Avoid sledding at night or other times when visibility is impaired.
Snowsuit - Making sure your child stays warm will help avoid hypothermia when the ability to make good decisions is at its worst.
