Vaseline is the brand name for pure petroleum jelly or petrolatum (also known as white soft paraffin).
Traditional emollients like Vaseline generally increase hydration in the skin by creating a barrier to transepidermal water loss by both sitting on top of the skin, as well as filling up the spaces between the corneocytes in the stratum corneum.
Vaseline was ‘invented’ by Sir Chesebrough in 1870.
Vaseline is safe: it is a very complex mixture of hundreds of saturated hydrocarbons and it is produced by the fractional distillation of petroleum. It is refined exhaustively to remove colour, aromatic hydrocarbons, and impurities.
Vaseline has anti-inflammatory properties.
Vaseline does not clog pores.
Vaseline enhances the repair of a damaged skin barrier better than most other emollients.
