Rumi's poetry is widely considered one of the great masterpieces of Islamic literatures, and Rumi is now the best-selling poet in America. This talk will serve as a deep introduction to Rumi's masterpiece, by taking the audience inside the main teachings and structure of the Masnavi. No background or language is necessary.
Biography:
Dr. Omid Safi is a leading public Muslim intellectual in America. He is a Professor of Islamic Studies at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in contemporary Islamic thought and classical Islam. He is the past Chair for the Study of Islam and the current Chair for the Islamic Mysticism Group at the American Academy of Religion, the largest international organization devoted to the academic study of religion.
Omid is an award-winning teacher and speaker, and was nominated six times at Colgate University for the "Professor of the Year" award, and before that twice at Duke University for the Distinguished Lecturer award. At the University of North Carolina, he received the award for mentoring minority students in 2009, and the Sitterson Teaching Award for Professor of the Year in April of 2010.
He is the editor of the volume Progressive Muslims: On Justice, Gender, and Pluralism (Oxford: Oneworld Publications, 2003). His work Politics of Knowledge in Premodern Islam, dealing with medieval Islamic history and politics, was published by UNC Press in 2006. His Voices of Islam: Voices of Change, was published by Praeger in 2006. His last book was published by HarperCollins, titled Memories of Muhammad, and deals with the biography and legacy of the Prophet Muhammad. He has a forthcoming volume from Princeton University Press on the famed mystic Rumi. The Carnegie Foundation recognized Omid as a leading Scholar of Islam in 2007-2008 for studying contemporary Islamic debates in Iran. That topic will be the topic of his next book from Harvard University Press. His volume on American Islam is forthcoming from Cambridge University Press.

This talk is not only informative and presented with humour at times but also given relevance to today and everyday life. It kept my total attention every minute and I sent it to a few friends. Dr Safi shows a wide understanding and experience of different cultures and religions. He creates bridges instead of barriers and division. THANK YOU!

AN EXCELLENT talk and I am Christian but a seeker of Truth rather than a particular religion, so I LOVED this! I learnt so much not only about Islam but about the Bible because many things he says relate equally to the Bible. It is great to realise that we have so much of our core beliefs and understanding in common. Dr Safi is also a great presenter!

Yes, Right. But as an Iranian I say: we have an important point to keep in mind: Rumi has nothing to do with Islam, his possibly positive outlook is for everything, because he is a lover, it comes from his deep understanding and astonishment and longing for Existence=God The literate liars are plundering Rumi's Love and goodness for the name of Islam and to showing a good face of Muhammad, the liar, killer, philander and pedophile prophet. and to pretend that Islam is not an anti-human rights and anti-feminist religion, While it is. Islam has many of these rudimentary laws such as the enslavement and the slaughter of people and opposed to dissent, etc. You ask; why they do not talk about the Quran and Islam itself, which is Extremely intolerable. They are just modern Mullahs who hide behind good words and eternal human beings like Rumi, to lie and steal forever which is their permanent job.

If you have read Rumi there can be no questions. That's why we have masnawi to get the answers of questions we never asked ourselves. If you have questions in your mind or if you are not satisfied then you read it wrong. People with closed heart finds the teachings of Rumi confusing its a treasure for the open heart.

Of course, you like others or me would read whatever you like to read and your choices are deeply respected. It all depends what we're looking for. If we're looking for core of Human's divine nature or issues of this kind, Rumi is an excellent source. Since he talks about simple Truth and Truth is timeless and evergreen that is why it seems that he is talking with us here and now.

According to Rumi (جان گشاید سوی بالا بالها در زده تن بر زمین چنگالها). Human has a soul and ego. The soul is an essence of the sacred world, belongs to God, the ego is an essence of the earth or soil. Therefore Mawlana says the soul has opened his wings towards heaven, and the ego has attached its claws to the earth. This attraction is the love which can be spiritual or egoistic.

They say that if you start to see everything as you and you as everything, there is no place for other forces that could corrupt this view. There is no place for religion or contradicting beliefs, as the the truth is one and whole (because there can be only one truth, not many). I think this is the message Sufis and Kabbalists are trying to convey to us, so we can accept people as they are and find ourselves….

The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from pleasure (I loved that meal) to interpersonal attraction (I love my partner). It can refer to an emotion of a strong affection and personal attachment. It can also be a virtue representing human kindness, compassion, and affection, the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another and it may describe compassionate and affectionate actions towards other humans, one's self or animals

Salem aleikum Very beautifully explained. Thank you. A few remarks I’d like to add. The usul/roots/branches I read/understand more like a fractal. Al Hallay (the doxa/illusion/dream) could refer to something like a 3-dimensional Mandelbrot set. The beloved I think has actually two meanings (please correct me if I am wrong) depending on how you vocalize it: al-ashk or al-ishk. Ashk would be Love (maybe this is also related to the name of Ashkenazi Jews) and ishk is the Light - in an understanding as Jesus also used it as truth(al Hak)/enlightenment - as these are not separable. I’m pretty sure the “unity” does involve more than you mention. It’s about the unity of entire mankind! Wahdad al Wujud, al Wahdad mutlaqa! Wujud / Body/Corps / Corpus Christi... It must be understood as “Incorporation”. This is what many Christians get wrong when they think they “eat the flesh of Christ..” (eeeuw!) they mean eating the fruit/gain of the divine (In-)Corporation. The Kingdom of God is in you. And it is outside of you. We have to make the outside like the inside and the inside like the outside. The Divine Equilibrium. Interestingly, while I write this, it reminds me on the Dune saga (Dune+Jah = Dunya?). Paul Atreides calls himself Usul (within the Fremen - or Free Men) and Muad-dib officially, who leads the Jihad and leads mankind to true freedom. Would somebody understand and translate what Muad-deeb migjt mean? Frank Herbert usually used terms/names that have a deeper meaning. “Father! The Sleeper has Awakened!” :)) By the way.. The plural of Sophos (greek: wisdom) is Sophoi - or Sufi! ;) Philosophy means Loving Sufi. (Or at least I like to think of it this way.) And please please don’t use Jihad synonymously with war, as the crusades were. It means every action, every effort towards the common purpose (“la cosa nostra”): peace on earth and freedom for all humans.

this is going to sound incredibly ignorant and it probably is, how to understand Rumi? mmm how to understand poetry, it's not about understanding, it's about becoming, becoming the emotion, the humanness of the writer, understanding the reverence of life and our relationship to the universal, our connectedness to all that is, both physical form and none physical...we're the expression of life itself just as the word is in the moment of receptivity of the universal stream running through the mind at that moment! However with that said, I'm going to honour this scholar by taking the time to listen to what he has to say at whicjh point my perspective will probably change hahaha...love is king!

In response to Rostam Sohrab: Mr. Rostam Sohrab orshould I say Mr. know-it-all! He didn't get into the etymology of the word, Mathnavi; it does mean he didn't know it. Secondly, his definition of the word " Mathnavi " is accurate; the two lines of a couplet rhyme an have the same meter, which is characteristic of Rumi's Mathnavi..

Please read the story of maulana rumi's life. He was a big islamic schaolar having sharia ilm. and suddenly SHAMS TABREZ R.A ( he was also Muslim saint from muslim sufi chain like Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jialani (Iraq) r.a & Nizamuddin aulia (India) r.a etc) meet him and changed his life. If you study deeply his Books you will find every where he loving and calling his Murshid (master) Shams Tabrez r.a. as regard as Rumi says many where in his poetry "He does not belong to any religion' actually he was at stage of 'FANAH FILLAH' a particular ISLAMIC SUFISM STAGE where person perished (fana) himself in the GOD and after FANA the person comes completely into control of god and every act & voice t of such person is called god's act & voice. There are so many popular stories of Muslim saints (specially Indian Muslim Sufi like Mansoor Hallaj(India) & Baba Bhulley Shah Pakistan). It is very famous story that mansoor halaj r.a. said 'ANAL HAQ' (I am God) and ignorant peoples hanged & kill him But all other sufi saints (specially Allama Iqbal) appreciated Mansoor for his achievements of divine supremacy & approximation. If u understands the term FANAFILLAH u will definitely understand that Rumi himself was not saying that “I have no religion”. Actually god says that’ I have no religion’ and Rumi is just passing the words of God. It is fact that God has no religion for him to survive and yes human’s needs religion to find God and without religion there is no way to find truth. God sent Prophets & saints toward humanity giving them one religion the only 1 religion from Prophet Adam (PBUH) to Prophet Muhammad (saw). But unfortunately 1 one religion is broken into pieces by bad peoples according to their own desires. (if you ignore the term of FANAFILLA even you know that more poets writes poems on behalf of other persons like Hazrat Allama Iqbal wrote the poem “Jawab e Skikwa’ as word of God or on behalf of God.)

47:30 "if that's the heaven that you want..." Although people like Mr Safi often imply that they're too good for it, neither the signs of the "anfus" nor those of the "afaq" can become manifest without the bodily senses and the pleasures they give. I always wonder what those people think about the fact that the bodily pleasures of heaven are described in Quran frequently and in detail. Are these verses only for the laity or what?

Most people do not understand anything that is not physical, especially at that time when the average ppl were illiterate and superstitious. Getting ppl to be good for goodness sake doesn't work well, fear of hell at least keeps ppl more humane. In order to have physical pain you need to have a living body. When you die you leave your physical body behind.

Rumi was a Soufi Mystic (non religious) and everywhere he is refered to Islam!!? Himself wrote, I read Quoran, chewed, removed its bones and made Persian Quoran- Masnavi. If himself was in this world, he would jump into his grave to hide himself, from what this world made out of his masterpiece. Himself was against Intellectualisation, once he met Shams, all his poetry is Love - Heart not Intellect. Let us honor this divine soul, came free and left free without attachment to anything.

My understanding is that, when Rumi got Enlighted, he kept the god but he left the slamic religion behind, you can see him throughout his journey with burning love for SHAMCE and sometimes god, this IS not slamic god it is the higher purpose that on seeks, to him there is no differ between love and god because slam cannot lunch into the inner love that he was seeking, slam limits you and its ascriptive, predetermine religious life that one has no input. But Rumi tell you head the road without purpose believe me the purpose will find you, the relationship of slam with Rumi is nothing. His father was the preacher and suppose to follow him and he abend end the whole mission, Shamce mission was to enlightened him to leave the religion behind and break the barrier, what shamce told him during 60 days in confinement, he only pushed him away from the organized religion like slam and thought him about inner self rather than praying based on script of slam.

How do you come to that conclusion? Shams is a Muslim scholar as well, just in case you did not hear about it. They were both mainstream figures, and not marginal figures in the circles of Islamic scholars and in the consciousness of the public, you are adamant that Rumi was about love, yet insist on hating Islam. I think you know Islam of the media, rather than real Islam. Islam is a rich ocean inwardly, and outwardly the human being needs some outward regulation to flourish, even the ocean has boundaries so that it does not destroy life.

Movlana Rumi is an Oguz Turk from Balkh, and his mother's name is Mumina khatun, "khatun" is "a lady" in Turkic languages..Movlana was writing in Persian which was like Latin for Europeans, and he knew Arabic, Turkic and Greek. We are so blessed to become to know such a genius Islamic Sufi philosopher!

you people are funny lol , you call a Persian poet who wrote in persian language who was born in Balkh which was a part of Iran at that time who his name address you where is he from and more importantly who choose the Persian language to write his masterpiece not turkish, not Arabic not greek languages , who was comfortable with Persian language because it is his native language , you call that person turk or arab !!! I'm a Persian and I can read masnavi without translator can you do the same? persian is my native language but even me can not understand some of its Persian words without searching their meaning, that shows he knows more Persian word than a native Persian speaker, how can you say Persian is not his native language and he just learned it? the last word! you claim mulana is a Turk which is complete horse shit, everyone knows that mulana was a Persian poet, the un has also recognized him as a Persian poet and if you search his name on google, everywhere even in Wikipedia its mentioned that he was a Persian poet BUT! I say for the fact that your entire country turkey was a part of the persian empire, just see the Persian empire map , there was no turk at that time , turks are actually barbaric people who were living in qafqaz , they are from mongolia who invaded turkey and north part of iran , people of turkey are actually Iranian who speak turkish , their DNA is Persian , they are from Aryan race , the real turks looks like Mongolian but people of turkey mostly look like Iranian or greeks.
