This is one of the most beautiful renderings of Rumi's poetry that I have ever heard. The modern music perfectly harmonizes with Rumi's ancient words, and creates a magic that further confirms for me the relevance of Rumi's poetry today. Thank you to Coleman Barks for sharing Rumi's poetry in this video and in your books.

Rumi is love! Love belongs to all... It doesn't matter where he lived, where he was born or to which religion. All he was and is, is LOVE. Be that! Forget the rest. And thank you Coleman Barks for your astonishing work!

mae she - very well stated ;) though can’t blame people for wanting to recognize the Faith that inspired this Muslim that is all Love. Bc if a Muslim acted against his faith in an ill manner, it would be Islam that is publicly shamed. That Faith recognition isn’t extended when a Muslim like Rumi is recognized, even though his Faith was his greatest inspiration.

Sometimes I feel so sad that some people called our nation Iran(Persia) "Axis of Evil". I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW THE LAND AND NATION OF the root of poets like Molana Rumi, Algebra, math, sciences and arts can be called axis of evil! So unfair! LOVE AND PEACE TO ALL NATIONS! This is from Molana Rumi's master, Shams: "We all have different faces, characters and names. If God wanted us to be all the same, He would have done it. Not to respect the differences, to accuse others is our fault and not respecting God." (Shams Tabrizi)

there is nothing called evil, it is a misnomer. all things carry good as well as bad aspects. by naming a subject, object as evil we deny the chance to see the goodness in those and promote hatred for selfish reasons and with self interests. iran has offered so much to humanity and will continue to do so.

Rumi was born as Mohammed Jalaluddin Balkhi, on September 30, 1207 C. E. in Balkh Province, Afghanistan. He descended from a long line of jurists, theologians, and mystics, including his father, who was known by followers of Rumi as “Sultan of the Scholars.” When Rumi was still a young man, his father led their family more than 2,000 miles west to avoid the invasion of Genghis Khan’s armies. The family travelled to Baghdad, to Mecca on pilgrimage, and to Damascus and eventually settled in Konya in what is now western Turkey. This part of the world was then known to its inhabitants as Rum, a name derived from the Byzantine Roman Empire that had formerly held it. Jalaluddin's name in religion and literature - Rumi - is itself derived from Rum. Rumi became a celebrated Islamic scholar at a young age and was admired for his learning. However, his life changed when he met the wandering mystic Sham al - Din in 1244. This meeting had a profound impact on Rumi, he felt Sham to be a divinely inspired person and he took him to be his Guru. Under the guidance of Shams, Rumi became interested of the way of the Sufi. Rumi is today thought of being a mystic and poet and is closely identified with Sufism within Islam, where devotees seek a direct union with God. Through his poetry, Rumi expressed his philosophy which included tolerance of all religious beliefs, the importance of goodness and charity, and above all, he advocated the importance of love. Rumi passed away on December 17th, 1273 in Konya, Turkey; his body was interred beside that of his father. Today, Rumi is loved around the world and is the best selling poet in the United States.

Thank you for your clear & right information. It is sad that many people discuss about his “nationality”, ignoring that at that time mentioned nations did not exist. Rumi didnt care about nationalities & religions.

A moth, flying into the flame says with its wingfire: Try This. The wick, with its knotted neck broken, tells you the same. A candle, as it diminishes, explains- Gathering more and more, is not the way Burn. Become Light and Heat and Help. Melt. The ocean sits in the sand, letting its lap fill with pearls and shells; Then, empty. A bitter salt taste hums- This. The rose purifies its face, drops the soft petals Shows its thorn; and Points. Wine, abandons thousands of famous names The vintage years and delightful bouquets, To run wild and anonymous Through your brain. The flute, closes its eyes and gives its lips to Hamsa's emptiness Everything begs, with the silent rocks For you- to be flung out like light Over this plain

Thanks, I really love this. But I think there are two problems. First, it would be reasonable that you use "Balkhi" instead of "Rumi" (because he was born in Balkh, and it is common), there are plenty samples about poets in this way like, "Attar Neishaburi", "Abol Moayed Balkhi", "Fakhruddin As'ad Gurgani", "Saadi Shirazi", "Shams Tabrizi", ... . Second, poems have written in Farsi ("Persian") that you mentioned from Afghanistan and Turkey, it was good that you mention from Iran and Afghanistan. Also I belive that Mollana Jallaledin Mohamad (Balkhi) belong to all people , countries and cultures. Thanks for your attempts, Good Job.

So many want to direct and argue. We listen to love thru Rumi and instead of embracing this Holy energy you argue about what does not matter. ? These poems are a holy baptisms and all are welcome to share in this bliss and feed on the delicacies of thoughts and beings of light will feed our minds and hearts . who could not bless the world with such light and love. Rumi is that key that turns the tumblers that will unlock the door to mind or heart and feeds the world with light and understanding allowing GOD to connect all things he created from love.

The performance was nice! But the original poem in Farsi/persian/dari with a background of traditional Persian music is greater!!! Molana or Romi has spoken Persian/Farsi/Dari. It does only matter that we (people with Dari/Farsi/Persian mother tongue) understand the poems more like it's original way (words)!!! We feel each world directly not through translated words!!!

Outlaw Soul- Rumi was born in Balkh, Afghanistan as Mohammed Jalalludin Balkhi, then moved to Turkey where he lived most of his life and where they began calling him Rumi. He was an Islamic scholar then met Shams Tabriz who inspired him to become a Sufi (Islamic mysticism, a direct path to God through love of the heart). But he said he was not from anywhere, that he was one with all of humanity. That is the essence of who he was.
