Dr. Richard Patton’s Views on Animal Nutrition 

Dr. Karen Becker I just want to thank you for your passion for and compassion towards our animal companions. You are, in my opinion, the best thing that has ever happened to our pets.

Farmer in Alberta has been in the record books several times for having many cats live past 20 years. They asked about the diet. He said, " Just meat and vegetables from my farm." My boxer has not had an allergic reaction for over a year since I stopped buying commercial kibble and raw. I only home cook now. I use Dr. Becker's suggested balance blueprint.

Kudos to Dr Becker for sharing this SIGNIFICANT info. With the DCM issue getting every concerned pet owner alarmed, its time to make the info on this video a widespread issue for our country. We have to LEARN HOW to feed pets correctly after generations of letting major pet food companies do all the thinking for us, where has it gotten us?

AMEN TO CHANGES IN THE PET FOOD INDUSTRY! my rule is: if it is something I would not eat, my dog won't eat it either. If it's not good for me, it's not good for my dog. Why feed a dog so it eventually gets sick? Knowledge is power - especially when it comes to the health of me and my family - furry relatives and human ones both!!

Great content! I started as an amateur, species appropriate diet creator for my pets 15 years ago. I constantly upgrade my knowledge and strive to do better every day. I served dinners of raw meaty bones and breakfasts of ground meat (of all protein sources) combined with vegetable and fruit content. I have experimented with different natural supplements. I am now feeding ground whole carcasses. I hear people pointing out dogs are distant relatives of wolves. They picture a wolf tearing at a carcass and tearing meat from the bone. But if you picture a fox consuming the whole prey they eat the stomach contents, the brains, the eyeballs, the bones, the fur and the thyroid. I cannot help but wonder if pet food manufactures take into account all the microbiology that should be consumed by our pets. How can we possibly duplicate what our animals would forage on their own? Even the meals I serve, I wonder how the rabbit that was ground was fed. Was this animal fed a species appropriate diet or just processed pellets deficient in all the microbials it would forage in the wild. And if it was wild caught, was it feasting on grasses and weeds on a roadside, contaminated by exhaust fumes and automotive wastes. Or, in a field treated with glycophosates? Oh my brain hurts!

My take away from this excellant and informative interview: 1. Reduce (eliminate) soluble Carbs from ours and our fur kids diets, stat! 2. The AFCO standards are misleading and do not represent quality guidelines to nourish our fur kids. Sustaining life is not the perspective we are seeking. We assume (wrongfully) these guidelines are nutritionally based. They need to measure the nutritional markers in the blood and for more than 6 months. 3. Dietary constraints and considerations noted: Economical and Convenience are top the challenge. Dr. Becker mentioned adding in higher quality meals into the mix to provide better nutrition based on your budgetary constraints. I see this as a smart option for better health. Replacing 3-4 meals a week is a brilliant recommendation. 4. Lifestyle changes to intentionally Create Resiliency through better nutrition will extend the life span and better health. DCM is on the rise. Lowering Soluble Carbohydrates is the mantra for today's Pet Parents. Moving back to a more primal,species specific diet is the place to start. Thank you Dr. Becker and Dr. Patton for sharing this critical pet food industry challenge to help us be better stewards of our Fur kids , to know better is to do better.

This is the second time watching this interview, very well done. I went to the feed-store the other day to buy more hay for the goats. The man working there was busy with other people. So the "barn cat" and I were hanging out together as I waited for my turn. The cat was an ordinary tabby cat. However, he was in just beautiful condition. lean but not too skinny, his coat was gleaming and his fur was very soft. As I would run my hand down his head, neck, back, and then up and over his tail (over and over again as he wanted more and more attention) next to zero cat hair would shed out into my hand. Most cats that I know including two of my very cubby cats seem to lose tons of hair into the hand when they are getting "attention". The man that was working there informed me that the cat is given "High quality" grain-free cat food, but that the cat eats very little if any of it. He does however hunt and kill the mouse and rats that move in and out of the barn and outbuildings. I have witnessed this cat eating rats and mice under his favorite picnic table a number of times. This is just a glaring example of how we have been feeding our domestic cats & dogs all wrong. That barn cat is the picture of health. and two of our three cats are NOT "healthy" at all. This is my fault, and it is going to change. We have a new addition to our household cat population a kitten that is just under a year, and I have been feeding her better than my other two cats (the "kitten" is eating canned food without kibble) the older two cats seem addicted to their kibble. But we are working on moving over to canned then (eventually ) a raw diet. I plan to do a photo diary of the transformation that I think our fat cats will have. I'm excited to see them get healthier and healthier. My household "pack" of dogs is also slowly being switched over to gently-cooked food. After they are all switched over to the gently cooked homemade diet, we plan to get them all switched over to raw. I have one dog that may be quite a challenge on this as every time I offer her a raw treat, she spits it out onto the floor and then the cat eats it. If I COOK that same RAW meat she will eat it without question. Again thank you for the interview.

Unfortunately you can't trust these manufacturers of kibble. years ago I had a dog that I bought the best top brand kibble with no grain and she lost all her fur and it cost me so much money to reverse the damage. But when I fed her a homemade diet she did so much better. I know a lot of it depends on perhaps genetics and a lot of other factors but I really don't think that any animal is going to be happy just eating kibble.

Wow this was exactly what I was looking for. This is the type of thing I want to learn more about and do for my career full time. I am so glad I found this youtube channel. Do you guys have any suggestions for someone who wants to get started in this industry?

Dr. Becker, still feeding your meal mix everyday! My little upchucker, hardly ever upchucks anymore. I find your meal mix is so easy, other than money, no one should not feed your product. But it can be expensive, especially if you have big dogs and multiples!

My 10lb dog can not tolerate much coconut oil. I can usually get away with half a teaspoon of organic extra virgin coconut oil. Any more than that and she will get diarrhea in a really bad way. Check your dog’s tolerance to any oil before settling into a specific daily amount. If your pet develops diarrhea stop administering right away. Get your pet on some probiotics to help settle the digestive upset then try the coconut oil again at a lower dose.

So grateful for the discussion. I wish you both could join and do something for the dog/cat/bird/chicken etc etc food to be more healthy. Meaning, bring awareness and ask the animal food administration (?) to raise the bar to make nutritious food. For companies to STOP making food that is even criminal. Filled with horrifying additives and preservatives. People need to become more educated to choose differently. There are a lot more"healthy" food now, but not only they are very expensive, but lets face it, we do not know what we are looking at, of what it is REAL nutrition for animals. Unfortunately, I do not trust meat. The one affordable we have no idea where it's coming from. They are adding more and more syntactics, even GLUE to meats. Where to buy? Not everybody is fortunate to live near farmers that treat and feed well their animals. It's complicated!! I haven't seen all the Dr. Karen Becker's videos, but I hope there are some videos, showing which ones are the most nutritious and the ones NOT TO TOUCH!

My childhood dogs and cat had mostly scraps and some dry food. The dogs would always poop in the dry food so we feed them mostly left overs. One dog died of heart worms, but the other one lived a few years over 20. Our cat was an outside cat and never left the property. She eat what ever she caught, scraps, and sometimes canned or dry cat food. Our cat was definitely over 20 maybe close to 30 before she died.

HUMANS HAVE NEVER……EVER……DONE ANYTHING…. AT ALL BETTER THAN NATURE. Plain and simple. I cannot feed raw, my area the meat won't allow this so I home cook and everyone is doing well. I also follow Dr Judy Morgan, I have both Dr Backer and Dr Judy Morgan as a template feeding my Beloveds.

All my dogs have lived well past there average age just feeding orejen regional red, they also had raw green tripe with steamed veg about 3 times a week, never had any health issues.

I LOVE YOU BOTH! My baby a Fox Terrier, told me she was only going to eat what I eat!. So she got her wish granted, and actually she eats better than I do!. I get her organic and grass fed beef, Organic free range eggs, get her Certified Organic free range Chickens including the kibbles, I meal the bones for her, she doesn't like fish. Some times steak bones too. A little well cooked pork, no fat certified organic plain yogurt mixed with her food, spirulina, vitamin E, carrots. Sweet potatoes, spinach, spirulina, dandelion greens, chlorella, pumpkin, squash. c,ucumbers, broccoli. Co Q10.

I rarely hear anything about frozen raw diet. I switched over to Natural Instincts for my 9 yr old Shih Tzu. She stopped a disgusting habit I could never stop even on high quality grain free kibble. At 9 people are shocked because they think she is very young. I use Mercola probiotics and their eye supplement only. No illness or diarrhea ever. She is happy and content.

Feeding raw was a scary decision, as we have been raised in a world of pet food as pet food, where marketing and vets have taught us that commercial pet food is the only way. Initially when starting raw feeding my dog had upset stomach for 3 days, and had to figure out how to eat large pieces of food. But now, after 3 years raw feeding, she is in excellent health, energetic and shiny coat, lovely teeth, and won't touch even "high quality" kibble. Her poop is smaller and less smelly and easier to pick up than when she was on kibble. Recently she got bored with her raw meat, so we have started occasionally cooking the meat, adding coconut oil, veggies etc for variety and she is loving her food.

Yep you guys are getting it. Now my dog is suffering from Cushings disease, heart murmur, Ear infection ( won’t go away). Skin probs from cushings.... & arthritis on top of it all . He’s almost 15 years old.... no cure for any of it .... what do I do ? Put him down? 😭

What about locally made kibble that is made every month at low temperatures over a longer time?

Karen I find this information to be beautiful not only in your appearance along with the information. I have been dealing with yeast with my Labs and have been getting better at it.

I agreed completely that soluble carbs are the elephant in the living room. Both for people & their pets. The whole world is overdosing on carbs & its killing us.

Hi Dr. Becker. Are there any ingredients in "Science or Prescription Diet", which helps to prevent seizures in some dogs? In 2011, I liberated my dog, mostly a Jack Russell Terrier, then just shy of one year old, from the local city shelter. They told me to always give her Science or Prescription Diet food because my dog had "issues" with one hind leg[Luxating Patella]. What they failed to tell me is that these dogs are sometimes prone to seizures. For years I kept my dog on Prescription Diet/Metabolic/or Mobility /JD without out incident. However, a few years ago around 2016, I took her off for Wet and dry Core Wellness and Fromm brands along with some raw food brands. On the label, Fromm and Core Wellness appeared to be a better affordable food. Then the seizures started. She's had a seizure earlier this month.There has been one about every six-eight months. IDK🤔

I am trying to find recipes to feed my German shepherd with epi. We do boiled chicken rice and squash with raw bloom vitamins. Please help. His stools have been soft to watery for 2 years. Our vet just did the epi test. What can I do to find the right foods and amounts for him per meal. With the enzymes.

The closed caption dialogue for this video is really poor...someone needs to go through and correct the MANY errors...it seems to have been transcribed phonetically in many instances with no thought to whether or not these are actually words that make sense. I used to take dictation as a secretary once upon a time and I get it that in making a transcription, it is hard to keep up with rapid speech, but with a taped dialogue and a foot pedal, you can play it back to make sure you do get all the words correctly and that it is correct and makes sense. I do appreciate the CC function for videos as my computer's sound function no longer works, but it would be a much more pleasant experience not to have to strain to read and make sense of the dialogue. I have enough understanding of animal nutrition that I did not find it incomprehensible, but others might not. I think you should be able to do better.

I really like when the Dr's. stated about doing the Best you can especally now in this time with cost to lower income People. Feeding afew times à week naturel raw whole diet with afew vegs and fruits 1 or 2 whole eggs for dogs and for cats yolks only. This is fifty thousand thumbs up. WOUNDERFUL WOUNDERFUL SEGEMENT

My Dog got diagnosed Bladder stones they are too small to operate So I don’t know what kind of prescription diet and did not dissolve the stones I was told to stay on the diet I do not want to stay on the diet I’m looking for a consultation I can give me a homemade diet To keep her healthy can you recommend any where I can go to get advice I will pay for a recipe with a qualified professional

I hope someone can help. I have Italian greyhounds I live on an old farm next to a Wheatfield that blasts me with round up and 24D and the farmer could care less that he’s killing me and my animals. The female has suddenly become scared to come in the house she looks around like somethings going to get her and is worse towards evening. Acts like she’s dealing with inflammation somewhere. Inner sinuses mouth I don’t know. Been running cedarwood and a diffuser seems to help some. The vet here thanks it’s dementia. But it’s hard to believe because even when she’s at her worst she still responds to me. Been trying to clean as much dust out of the house if it’s her sinuses. But she just wants to hide under the bed on a pile of papers that she has spread out. She pants and shakes violently when she’s going through an episode

Then why are so many vets ignorant or stupid or stubborn. I think my vet is the reason that my beloved dog died. Why oh why wouldn't a vet understand how majorly important nutrition is. Do not make excuses for them. This is a reason why our beloved pets are dying too early.

Hey Mercola I have been trying to transition my 8month old puppy to a raw diet and she is not taking it well at all. She cant even hold down a raw chicken wing. There is a huge difference between a chihuahua and a husky. Do you think that both would thrive on a raw diet? Also as dogs evolved along side of us we fed them our meat we cooked by the fire too so could smaller dogs do better eating cooked meat?

Hi Doctor's i have a big problem my dog will not eat and commercial food or shop food. that is not the only problem she is producing milk for the past 6 months have not bread her but she thinks i am her pup she is 12 years old now i love my Sassy and am scared of what will happen to her if she dose not stop producing milk. She just flat refuses to eat Shop dog food i have to feed her a barf diet. left a bowl with several different types of shop dog food for 4 days and she will not eat it that food ended up in the garbage bin. Please help me and my Pomeranian dog called Sassy i am 74 years young lol i grate the raw vegetables for her and give her some soft fruit

I "cant afford" to pay for natural food. My income bracket is the lowest bit I still feed a homemade diet. Granted Ive had a lot of animals and therefore know how terrible commercial "pet food" is and all the health problem it causes so its not an option. Commercial food is not food! If it were it would cost hundreds of dollars a bag.

Omg peoole it’s so simple ! Dogs in wild have access to alfalfa/ grass/ berries/ even some toxins .. like apple seeds .. that can help the gutt!!! They would not walk around searching for brocolli or cauliflower plant . Or a filed of sweet potato .

Vets are not trained about zoology or veganism either.

Good food is not cheap for us or our pets. Avoidance of another gorilla is the fact that conventional meats and produce; all foods are going to have their consequences on us; AND our pets. I think Americans more than not could not afford it to feed themselves AND our pets organic foods and grass fed animal products. It is a fact that CHEAP FOOD policies of the past generations has been a health problem. Just look at our health as a country. Sorry to say this but if we can't feed our pets right what does that say about the feasibility of having pets?
