John, I love your soap and deodorant! I am using the deo myself now for some time- as well as Siliski's. the "Dr" doesn't make their own soap, it's factory made, always has been- but you do. In my mind, that puts you miles ahead as you are passionate about the product. Yeah, they got the marketing down early and pat- but that's even gone downhill imo of late. Keep up the good work, you are just getting started! Thanks for the encouragement a few months ago, you know you got a friend in NY!
Tried them both, TBS is on another level, really good stuff. Plus Dr.S is only in it for the money, older ads go on about how bad shower gels are and now they sell gels in the grocery store. They never were about the quality of the soap they are about marketing
I like both, Dr squatch is what got me started. But I like Dr squatch more to be honest. I feel tbs scents all smell similar. Squatch deo works great for me also.
Started with Dr. S but have been exclusively using The Black Stuff for nearly a year now. It lasts longer, smells nicer and is top quality - plus I prefer to support local businesses and TBS is just a short hop down the M50😊
I can't believe I'm saying this, I've been a Die hard Squatch fan for years, but as soon as I'm out of my current supply, I will be trying The Black Stuff. And ONLY because of this video right here. I first saw them on an ad on IG and honestly just thought it was a Squatch knock off (sorry John!), but it got my attention enough to look into, which led me here. I'll give it a try and come back to this video and give you an update :)
TBS is hands down better than Squatch in all categories. While I do still have a couple Squatch deos and Briccs, I prefer TBS because they are 100 percent natural. Squatch uses synthetic fragrances. Also worth mentioning.. TBS soaps last WAY longer. To the point where I have a sliver left of the Irish mountain rain and it refuses to crack or break 😂 I actually fused it to my dogs bay beach so it’s easier to hold now. Squatch always breaks on me when it starts getting thin right away
I was an avid squatch fan but having tried 'the black stuff' I think their scents are better quality with being essential oils and they are well blended/balanced mixed scents with more interest rather than squatches more 2d scents using fragrance oils. By no means is Dr squatch bad quality but my money is firmly with 'the black stuff' ❤

Nice notes between the two brands. I have used Dr Squatch for 4 years and decided to try the Black Stuff. The difference in quality is very apparent! Needless to say I am always impressed. The scent comes off as a natural musk and not blatant fragrance. The grit is done much better. It leaves my skin feeling better. The difference between the Dr's pine tar and TBS' Atlantic Pine Tar js astounding. As you mention, I love the personable experience you get with the Black Stuff. The Dr is still better than generic soaps, just not on the same level of quality and the overall customer experience. The Black Stuff does leave the market open for shampoo and conditioner bars, as well as lotion. That said though, the owner John is always working to create new products and not just rushing something sub par to the market.
So you were an avid Squatch user? That's where I am at now, but will now give The Black Stuff a try because of this video, but nice to know someone else has already done that and had a good experience.
Im looking at the website and each TBS soaps are 4.75- 5 oz. Not the 5.5 you mention. Shrinkflation? Squatch shows only 5oz bars...must be because of the robots.
I started with DrS but found it left my skin very dry (important as already have skin conditions). Switched to TBS and no such problems. Next for me the product quality with TBS is superior. Thirdly, John's customer service is second to none. Finally, if you are lucky enough to be in Dublin (Ireland) then you can go visit the team.
I ordered 4 bars, 2 deodorants and a soap case from The Black Stuff today. Saw this video after and it made me happy I seem to have chosen the right one. 😅🙌
i think that Dr Squatch makes some nice soaps, very nice soaps, and they're good at what they do. I also agree that the box is kinda copied. very copied. carbon copy. i have never tried the black stuff, and to be honest, its not good that i only came here because i looked up best mens soaps, i saw them pop up, i thought it might be a review website and saw it was their own brand. they had the same branding as dr squatch, "our soaps arent bullshit". i saw their boxes were the same. i saw the scents were even the same i mean they just put atlantic in front of pine tar and called it a day. i will definitely try these and not jump to conclusions, but imho, bad start for the black stuff. i also prefer the color scheme on dr squatch. about the review, i think it was nice, but there wasn't enough review for my liking. i know and understand the bias, but it is important to note that Dr Squatch is a much bigger company, and you chose a red brick soap, some of their soaps have nice colors and also designs and elements within. i just used cedar citrus and really enjoyed it.
In all about lathr and grizzly being a canadian squatch was dissapointing with there regukar lineup but the halloween collab was solid. Bur shipping is awful they lost a order. Grizzly hasnt and there states based and lathr canada lol
Compared to TBS, squatch stuff is terrible, having used the black stuff I think they have a far superior product that lasts longer and smells better. He's right about customer service, TBS is fantastic and being able to interact with John on social media especially if you have a product or shipping issue is great. Yes their product isn't always 100% perfect (Deo bottle that sticks) but thats life and how they sort it is what sets them apart.
This guy definitely dropped the soap for the Black Stuff lol to say they didn't copy the box is crazy I have no connection with Dr. Squatch I only purchase one bar from Dr Squatch because I work in Iraq and really not at my disposal but I can see clear as day and not saying one product is better than the other because I haven't tried the Black Stuff I'm just commenting on the copy of the product.
I love how people write comments about me but directed towards me as if I don't read these or reply. 1st off id agree the boxes do look similar but I don't believe it's a blatant copy. You are entitled to your opinion and it's welcomed here. 2nd legally you can't trademark a box so there's technically no infringement issue here as the mascot and logos are not the same or copied. The point of bringing this up is that Dr squatch sued them twice over a box they had no trademark for which I believe is a big brand punching down in a smaller soap maker. I think that's lame and I expressed that in this video. The black stuff is changing it's boxes and branding I believe so this won't be an issue in the future. 3rd I don't make money from these videos nor do I have an affiliate code with either brand. I don't always recommend the black stuff as I feel there are other brands people would enjoy more like Valhalla beard and body or grizzly natural. In this case I'd recommend the black stuff over Dr squatch for reasons I mentioned in this video but I also just don't care for the brand. 4th I Appreciate you stopping by, have a great day :)
Haven’t tried the Dr S brand. Have used the Black Stuff the last 16 months & can honestly say it’s absolutely incredible for your skin. Reason I switched from gels to soap. You feel cleansed … it’s that simple. Oh by the way the deo is super too. Only thing is it take about a week for you body to adjust from sprays to stick. It’s not roll on guys just to clarify. It’s a top quality product folks
I like the soap guy. Thats where I’ve been ordering now. Comes to about $3.50 per bar for 1 loaf = 9 bars. And unlike the Dr Suatch says it weighs 5oz but it weighed 4.4 with the box , the soap guy all weighed over 5.2 with no box. If you order a bunch of soap and they are all short on weight like that it adds up to being like 3-4 bars you’re missing. Plus add in the price difference and going with “The soap guy” you’re getting like 5 free bars compared to Dr S (between weight and price). Just my opinion though. It’s all natural and all that as well check out his website they sell a lot of stuff.
This is awesome. I had no clue about the battle between Squatch and TBS . I’m new to the natural soap scene, approaching a year now, Squatch was my my introduction to it. About the beginning of the year I started exploring other brands, in May I got a link for 11 bars for $55, I’ll never refuse $5 bars 😂😂😂 I’ve been able to acquire an LE or 3. My only question is was because the box was square? Or Rectangle?😂 😂😂😂😂
Being bombarded with advertisements for the "dr." soaps, I have purchased a bundle from them. When the box arrived I was happy to try them out. In the box they smell very nice. However the happiness made quick way for disappointment. One bar last max 2 weeks (when showered once a day). Furthermore and this is for me a bigger disappointment, the scent is only a little noticeable during showering (I haven't tried them all yet), so maybe it depends on the type. Once I am out of the shower, I don't smell it anymore, neither on my skin nor in the bathroom. For the high price per bar, this is a real disappointment and i have no clue why people are so excited about these average smelling soaps. Now I am considering to try the black stuff soaps. Have these bars a more noticable scent and can you still smell it after showering? Who can give information about this?
Let's not sound to biased 😅.. I don't use either one yet. I thought this was going to be a real head to head review against these 2 brands that keep stopping my videos to advertise themselves.
Being biased does not mean that you are not being honest. I started out with Dr. S, and honestly, I still like a few things that they put out. When it comes to The Black Stuff, it is absolutely killer.... every single thing that John Larkin puts out is top notch, and his customer service is beyond measure.... Great video James....
Yeah had you watched the whole review I mention scents. The black stuff is essential oils which won't last as long as fragrance oils but have more natural scents. Thanks for stopping by though
This feels hella bias to me, not all the bars are one color from squatch and that Dracula soap smelled super good. He's mainly talking up the black stuff and talking down the squatch. Nothing is wrong with it being a uniform shape either lol
Yeah I don't like Dr squatch it's trash IMO and I do mention I'm biased to the black stuff in this video. Regardless the black stuff is superior to the Dr squatch for the fast they use EO instead of FO. The have the edition of Castor oil in the soap base. It's made in house compared to being made by the soap guy. Thanks for stopping by though
@@scentadventure it's still natural and isn't toxic so I don't see the issue. It also is pretty moisturizing as it is so I also don't see an issue without it having Caster oil. It's also fine that it's made in large amounts and not by hand
Yeah but those are my reasons that it's better. Have you tried the black stuff? I wouldn't even say the black stuff is the best brand but it's better IMO than Dr squatch. Grizzly natural or Valhalla beard and body would be my top 2 brands for soap.
Tried all the major brands and the Black Stuff Deodorant works the best (although the scents are inferior to Squatch) The soap scents for the Black Stuff are inferior to Squatch. Just my opinion.
