CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ripper (Sterling Hayden) tells Mandrake (Peter Sellers) his views on why Communists don't drink water.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1964, with the Cuban Missile Crisis fresh in viewers' minds, the Cold War at its frostiest, and the hydrogen bomb relatively new and frightening, Stanley Kubrick dared to make a film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button -- and played the situation for laughs. Dr. Strangelove's jet-black satire (from a script by director Stanley Kubrick, Peter George, and Terry Southern) and a host of superb comic performances (including three from Peter Sellers) have kept the film fresh and entertaining, even as its issues have become (slightly) less timely. Loaded with thermonuclear weapons, a U.S. bomber piloted by Maj. T.J. "King" Kong (Slim Pickens) is on a routine flight pattern near the Soviet Union when they receive orders to commence Wing Attack Plan R, best summarized by Maj. Kong as "Nuclear combat! Toe to toe with the Russkies!" On the ground at Burpleson Air Force Base, Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake (Peter Sellers) notices nothing on the news about America being at war. Gen. Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) calmly informs him that he gave the command to attack the Soviet Union because it was high time someone did something about fluoridation, which is sapping Americans' bodily fluids (and apparently has something to do with Ripper's sexual dysfunction). Meanwhile, President Merkin Muffley (Sellers again) meets with his top Pentagon advisors, including super-hawk Gen. Buck Turgidson (George C. Scott), who sees this as an opportunity to do something about Communism in general and Russians in particular. However, the ante is upped considerably when Soviet ambassador de Sadesky (Peter Bull) informs Muffley and his staff of the latest innovation in Soviet weapons technology: a "Doomsday Machine" that will destroy the entire world if the Russians are attacked.

Sellers's laughter is genuine. This was the hardest scene to film because these two kept cracking each other up. They kept this one because the strain peter sellers was under to not laugh made it look like he was frantically in fear. If you listen closely, right after Ripper says, "70% of you is water", you can hear Mandrake mutter, "oh lord..." and from then on out it was a desperate battle to stay in character. Two great masters of the craft exchanging blows of talent. My favorite parts of this movie happen in Ripper's office.

You can even see the veins on Sellers's forehead begin to bulge from strain after that point, as he struggles to keep his composure.

@@almostfm Which fictional character said it doesn't make a difference in terms of merits in real life. It's a movie. What people say and how they say it is scripted. Thus, information "smuggled" in trough dialogue should not be perceived as inherently tainted as whatever, because a fictional character said so. An inquisitive, rational mind which respects truth, will look into the matter, and come to their own conclusions. A foolish, cowardly conformist will care only about wanting to be perceived as being right, and getting validation in a dysfunctional tribalistic dynamic. Truth and merits don't matter, only what won't put him at an social disadvantage. He will look around, observe what the majority says, and how they react, and replicate that pattern of behavior just to fit in. This occurs on subconscious level in most people. It certainly has a potential to spark a debate. Perhaps that was the intention all along. This movie is from 1964. Access to such information was much more restricted than it WAS on the internet ( at least up to circa 2016, later - it's debatable ).

I had a class from a professor who would ramble with these long anecdotal stories with the point being that there was a decision between choice A or B, and he would keep talking about how it had to be A or B, until you're on the edge of your seat, waiting for him to tell you which answer was right, and then he would end with, "And of course, the answer was [inaudibly low]." This happened several times, and I am certain he knew exactly what he was doing, from building up suspense to putting the answer at the very end of the last sentence to dropping his voice so low in volume that you couldn't hear the word. I think he was daring someone to ask, "Could you repeat that louder?" And no one ever did. And it didn't matter, because his stories were totally off-topic.

Some of us have been in this situation - the person you're talking to is utterly insane but you don't want to or can't offend them by pointing it out, so you mumble and avoid eye contact and try to keep the conversation going, attempting to convince them that you aren't saying they are wrong, but also trying to avoid agreeing with them. I've had conversations like this with relatives. It's never pleasant. Let an older fellow provide a bit of perspective: I saw this movie when it first came out. Now, it is a great comedy. Then it was still a comedy, but also terrifying. It references several things that younger people might not know. 1. Gen Ripper is not just some individual nut case. His profile is that of the "John Birch Society", which at the time, was fairly strong. They saw a vast conspiracy against democracy, and produced a book called "None Dare call it Conspiracy." Unfortunately they saw the conspiracy as communist, and they did promote the idea of fluoridation as a Communist plot, including the idea that it was "sapping our precious bodily fluids", which would eventually destroy us from within. There were many Birchers in the U.S. military leadership. 2. Peace was kept by an insane and flawed doctrine known as MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction). The idea that no one could survive, or win a nuclear war, would function as a deterrent, and make nuclear war impossible. However The USSR (Russia), was way behind the U.S in building nuclear missiles. Many in the U.S. military and CIA pushed for the idea of a "Pearl Harbor-like" preemptive nuclear strike, to take out the USSR, in a surprise attack, before it could obtain parity, and the "opportunity" might disappear. Discussions were held, as to what would be "acceptable losses" for the U.S., including entire cities, and numbering in the millions. Documents declassified in the 1990's, show that President Kennedy was being pushed in that direction. We came closer in the Cuban Missile Crisis, than most of us imagine. So, insanity ruled on many levels, and the danger of starting a nuclear war by miscalculation, was real, as it is today, in the ongoing "demonization" of Russia.

Are these things fads? Have any of you wondered if the ozone hole is still there, if it's suppose to be there, or if the supposed problem has been solved? No-one is interested in the Ozone Hole anymore. We have moved on to the next fad, "Climate Change." Does the truth lie in any of these scares, or in what connects them? @@tmillchr Back in the mid-‘80s, I attended a game convention where I played a boardgame called "Kremlin", which re-created the cut-and-thrust of Soviet politics as each faction in the government vied for enduring power -and was opposed, of course, by every other faction. A central mechanic of the game was the fact that, each turn, the incumbents in top government positions aged, and that due to age and stress a certain number of them could be counted upon to become sick - maybe even die in office, in which case they could be replaced by a member of another faction. One turn was especially bad for this - the dice rolls turned against everyone, and previously hale Party leaders withered and dropped away right and left. Whereupon the guy currently playing the Soviet Premier observed, in an endearingly cheesy fake Russian accent, “Oi! Sickness is running like wildfire through Moscow! The ranks of the upper Party are being devastated!” Turning to his friend and fellow-player, he asked, “Did you place fluoridation in the city's water supply as I directed, comrade?" The friend, looking shocked, slapped his own forehead and replied, "Fluoridation! I thought you said RADIATION, comrade!"

How...??
@jkorshak
@jkorshak 3 года назад
@@mr.t5262 tldr: Mumbo jumbo because everything is a conspiracy. Fluoride, a mineral, is naturally present in many foods and available as a dietary supplement. Fluoride is the ionic form of the element fluorine, and it inhibits or reverses the initiation and progression of tooth decay and stimulates new bone formation. Fluoride reduces the decay of tooth enamel by the formation of fluorapatite and its incorporation into the dental enamel. The fluoride ions reduce the rate of tooth enamel demineralization and increase the rate of remineralization of teeth at the early stages of cavities. Fluoride exerts these effects by the demineralization and remineralization cycle. The remineralization cycle, critical to decay prevention, occurs when fluoride is present in the oral cavity.
