CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Kong (Slim Pickens) tries to fix the bomb door, he accidentally opens it and ends up riding it all the way down.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1964, with the Cuban Missile Crisis fresh in viewers' minds, the Cold War at its frostiest, and the hydrogen bomb relatively new and frightening, Stanley Kubrick dared to make a film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button -- and played the situation for laughs. Dr. Strangelove's jet-black satire (from a script by director Stanley Kubrick, Peter George, and Terry Southern) and a host of superb comic performances (including three from Peter Sellers) have kept the film fresh and entertaining, even as its issues have become (slightly) less timely. Loaded with thermonuclear weapons, a U.S. bomber piloted by Maj. T.J. "King" Kong (Slim Pickens) is on a routine flight pattern near the Soviet Union when they receive orders to commence Wing Attack Plan R, best summarized by Maj. Kong as "Nuclear combat! Toe to toe with the Russkies!" On the ground at Burpleson Air Force Base, Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake (Peter Sellers) notices nothing on the news about America being at war. Gen. Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) calmly informs him that he gave the command to attack the Soviet Union because it was high time someone did something about fluoridation, which is sapping Americans' bodily fluids (and apparently has something to do with Ripper's sexual dysfunction). Meanwhile, President Merkin Muffley (Sellers again) meets with his top Pentagon advisors, including super-hawk Gen. Buck Turgidson (George C. Scott), who sees this as an opportunity to do something about Communism in general and Russians in particular. However, the ante is upped considerably when Soviet ambassador de Sadesky (Peter Bull) informs Muffley and his staff of the latest innovation in Soviet weapons technology: a "Doomsday Machine" that will destroy the entire world if the Russians are attacked.

fun fact - the actor, slim pickens, was a professional bull rider before he got into acting. when he was drafted in ww2 the draft board asked his previous occupation / relevant experience and he said “rodeo” but they misheard it as “radio” and he spent the war at a radio site stateside

Pickens lived with his wife in Columbia, California. He died in a hospital in Modesto on December 8, 1983, after surgery for a brain tumor. He was survived by his wife and children, Thomas Michael Lindley and Margaret Louise Wittman (née Lindley), as well as his stepdaughter he chose to raise as his own, Daryle Ann Giardino (née Lindley). If you never got spoiled before watching the movie, when the door rips open with the viscous loud wind gushing through, seeing the land underneath, its such a switch in tone, and unexpected, i love it. @oxtailsoup6493

Indeed. For me it’s top 5 in iconography. There is so much packed into this one scene. You know a cinematic moment is special when you can evoke a range of emotions that run the gamut from laughter, to sadness, to fear. I’ve heard so many different emotional reactions to this scene and I think that’s what makes it so special. It’s so many different things to so many different people and it’s almost impossible for a 3 min scene in a movie to evoke such a varied emotional response that transcends gender, culture, race, and nationality. Even foreigners who have a distant opinion about American culture in general have widely varied emotional reactions to this one single iconic scene. Truly one of the greatest movie moments in cinematic history.

I'm pretty sure Sellers wasn't comfortable with the prospect of playing a redneck cowboy like Kong and was probably relieved that someone like Slim Pickens replaced him. As for Dan Blocker in the role of Kong, I think Pickens outdoes him in the high-pitched "yahoo" yell.

The description's not accurate - Kong doesn't accidentally open the bomb bay doors - opening the bomb bay doors was why he was there in the first place, specifically to improvise a fix to the damage that was keeping the doors closed.
@RedSky-vf8bf
@RedSky-vf8bf 6 лет назад
I think the description meant to say that he might've inadvertently went out the bay door with the bomb. It's ambiguous, probably intentionally, but you can't know for sure that the Major actually wanted to ride that sucker into the ground. Or if he was so focused on getting the bay door open, that he didn't even pause to think that "Maybe I shouldn't be sitting on top of this when I fix the panel."

Personally, I don't think it would much matter. The planes were ordered to go in, and nothing of the information the plane crew received gave them any reason to believe that a nuclear war wasn't already underway. Even if the US was conducting a 'first strike', the inevitable retaliation would be massive. What would there be to return to? I know *I* wouldn't be particularly motivated to go home. But given the option of going out on the ultimate rodeo instead..... OH HELL YEAH.
@joevignolor4u949

The bomb bay doors on a B-52 are operated hydraulically and not electrically. And I can tell you from personal experience working on B-52's that no pilot is going into the bomb bay and would be able to find the correct wires to do anything. It's hard enough for maintenance personnel to figure out the wiring on a B-52 sitting on the ground using a wiring diagram.

'YE-HAW !' Kong sure went down making a personal statement rather than just dropping a random bomb! 🍷

The fact that no music plays during his ride down and all we hear is him howling with the wind makes it so much better.

He goes from cheering, then there is a flash of light and silence. It goes from being funny to reality hitting. The world just tumbled.

I always imagined this as him knowing the second those bomb bay doors opened, he was essentially dead right there. Absolutely zero chance of survival, so hell you might as well be along for the ride and enjoy the last few moments of your life on Earth.

I love the tone of human perserverance, bolstered by Johnny Comes Marching Home through the B-52 scenes, in an ordinary movie we’d be rooting for them all the way, but in this case human ingenuity ran face first into human ignorance, and doomed humanity. God, what a great movie.

Wow, actors Shane Rimmer, the voice of Scott Tracy from Thunderbirds, James Earl Jones of Star Wars, Lion King, etc, and Slim Pickens! What a combo! Complete with Peter Sellers! Edit: can't forget about George C. Scott as Patton!

Shane Rimmer was in Star Wars as wel. His single line was "This R2 units a bit beat up , want a new one?"
