Interesting that you mention the Dalek sounding like Zippy from Rainbow, because Roy Skelton who voiced him would go on to become the chief Daleks voice actor in the series.

🤯 You're kidding!! Oh wow, yeah I just looked it up and it says he voiced them voiced the Daleks in the 1967 story, "The Evil of the Daleks" and provided voices for five additional Dalek serials including "Planet of the Daleks", and for the one-off anniversary special "The Five Doctors". I've yet to see any of those, but I'll most definitely have to keep an eye out for him! I love that bit of info, thank you so much Keplers. Also, thank you for watching, have a lovely day!

Roy Castle (Ian) was also in Carry On Up the Khyber (1968), Doctor Terror's House of Horrors (1965), and presented the popular tv show Record Breakers for many years.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet, but Peter Cushing actually had a theory about the cannonisity of his Dr, that he came up with around the beginning of the 2nd Dr's era. According to Cushing, his Dr could be a future incarnation suffering from amnesia, who is being forced to relive altered versions of his past adventures by none other than the Toymaker.

If you want the full three versions of this, you should get a copy of the novelisation, also written by David Whitaker. You get a third version of them meeting up and another version of Skaro and the city with extra Daleks and their leader. In fact, you can buy an audiobook of "Doctor Who and the Daleks" and it's read by Ian Chesterton himself, William Russell.

I remember reading that first novelisation in 1973, before I ever saw this film, and long before anyone thought we might see The Dead Planet on tv again. Very well written, and we get a hint of a budding romance between Ian and Barbara.

@@papalaz4444244 The Barnes Common scene is a great setup if you don't intend to novelise An Unearthly Child. Whitaker writes it like the beginning of a 60s "kitchen sink" drama, very ordinary with just a little unease, until the moment Ian enters the police box....

One thing that has not been said is that people had only seen the Daleks in 405 line monochrome tv screen about 20" or maybe smaller if you were less affluent. A huge part of the appeal of this film is that they saw it in full colour on a giant cinema screen. It must have been like Star Wars to them :) The fire extinguisher guns have a couple of purposes. One is it saves money on hand animating every ray blast. That would not have been possible. The other is that it makes the deaths less horrible for the young audience the films was really intended for.

For the Peter Cushing world of Dr. Who i like to think they used an ordinary Police Box added in time circuits somehow made the inside bigger and just named it "TARDIS" similar to how Doc Brown built the time machine out of a delorean from "Back to the Future". In the 1960's the Daleks were so popular there was a thing called "Dalekmania" so they wanted to make a film about Daleks and saw some money making into it even though this is called "Dr. Who and the Daleks" these are basically Dalek movies.

41:42 I call it the Dalek bug zapper. Back in the 1980's where I live, which is a large, rural farming community, EVERYONE had at least one. The locals 'the good ole' boys' as they are often called, after a day of farming related work would relax on the summer nights by sitting down in their porches, beer in hand, and some pretzels or crisps on the nearby table, and watch as the insects, drawn to the bright blue light, approach the light and get electrified (bug zappers had a long inner core that gave off a nice, pretty blue soft light, surrounded by a wire mesh, not unlike the grid like patter that Dalek light trap thing has there) and just laugh as the bugs went ZAP.....it was the late 80's in a the middle of the night, corn and wheat fields all around....these guys had little else to amuse themselves with. I bet the Daleks were also giggling as they saw at least a few Thals falling into that thing.

Interesting that they have the TARDIS doors opening "out the way" a point made in the Doctor's Wife. Another thing that occurs to me is that this TARDIS looks like it was made from scratch using Earth's comptemorary technology, much like the Third Doctor's attempts at trying to repair his TARDIS after exile to Earth after The War Games.

20:59 I just think the 'toilet rolls' were just containers of food, perhaps seeds, or something like protein or amino acids. Look at the tray of food the Daleks gave here in this film, mostly pudding or jelly like stuff, would need a container for those. And since the Thals did not know what the Daleks looked like (they thought the Daleks were long gone, and the city was deserted), the Daleks would need to minimally hide, since the Thals might think the Dalek machines were just some bits of machinery, especially since the Thals were simple farmers.

BTW, there was a comic book adaptation to this movie, I THINK Marvel did it, it's almost like the movie, but Ian is a little more like his original self, even yelling at the Doctor when he admitted to lying about the needed mercury. It's not a bad read.

I think I started with Tom Baker, etc, then watched the previous doctors. I don’t remember seeing this film. The color and design are excellent. The Daleks seem to speak in sy la bles. I see you mentioned this in the trivia. I didn’t know it was intentional. The Dr burning the cakes reminds me of… That’s right, King Alfred the Great, leader of Wessex and defeater of the Danes is most commonly known for the time he managed to burn some loaves of bread (sometimes called cakes) by accident!

These Thals are my favorite depiction of them. Genesis of the Daleks' Thals and Kaleds were underwhelming, no alien features at all. The Dals, the blue skinned creatures that look like Goblins from the lord of the rings, are how the Dalek ancestors should have been like. And Thals being blue skinned is a nice idea, too. Wonder if the blue eye shadow is merely cosmetic or serves some purpose...like some sorta sensory thing. I also like this depiction of Skaro, especially since it's night all the time, which might explain the Thals, perhaps little to no vitamin D in the Thal biology, like the Remans from Star Trek, they too live on a perpetually dark world. I just wonder why that one Thal had blue hair rather than the normal blond all the others seemed to have?

@TheCastellan

@@MoviesWithMarty Here we go, then. The events of Stolen Earth ends.....and the 10th Doctor, being the preaching, overbearing lecturer on how to behave, chastises his clone for doing the RIGHT THING (Sorry, but I DO NOT like the 10th Doctor.....an annoying motormouth who NEVER shuts up, and his overbearing pacifism gets old FAST...ESPECIALLY his "I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry!" Only Doctor of post 2005 Who I liked so far was Eccleston), dumps him and Rose off in the alternate dimension. The Clone Doc, is not a human, nor a timelord, but a mix. He's got one heart, MAYBE a respiratory bypass system but still more time lord than human....probably can regenerate. I'm also gonna make him a 1st Doctor, new fresh body and new regeneration cycle. Probably gained some of Donna's eccentricity. He and Rose get together, maybe marry and eventually starting a family. They join up with UNIT or Torchwood, Doctor becomes their scientific advisor. Years pass, Rose eventually dies from old age, and a distraught Doctor takes on his granddaughter, which he named Susan. Knowing Susan has some timelord genetics, he begins to teach her in the ways of science, way above anything earth has to offer (also, do timelord childhoods last as long as humans, or is it like Grogu, and Susan stays a little girl for decades?). The Clone Doctor is older, now, and decides to leave UNIT or Torchwood, and decides to go on his own again, with Susan in tow. To make things easier to train Susan, he takes the partially grown/finished Tardis, with it's limited ability/power, takes the Tardis to the 1960's of this alternative dimension, or maybe a little earlier, considering what's next. After settling in this new setting, Clone Doctor, now using the alias "Doctor Who" begins to teach Susan (who can now read science books overnight, and probably considered a prodigy, probably making appearances at some fancy universities) Timelord science and history. Eventually, he reads in the paper of how a teenage girl lost her parents in some accident, or mugging gone wrong, and, to his amazement, sees the girl's name in the papers is "Barbra Wright", THE Barbra of this dimension. Remembering his fond memories of the time he spent with Barbra, and wanting to help this poor girl as much as he can, he offers to take her in as another of his grand children, knowing she has the potential of being a teacher herself in our dimension. Fast forward to to 1965 of this dimension, and Doctor Who and Susan finish TARDIS (remember, Doctor Who said he and Susan spend 'many years' building Tardis, which adds to my idea that Susan IS herself a Timelord, or at LEAST a human/timelord hybrid like Doctor Who himself). And have plans to get it running in a few days. Barbra is dating, like any grown woman, and gets a new boyfriend, who Barbra invites to pick her up at the Who Residence (considering the stash of various currencies the Tardis had in the rubbish 1996 TV movie, and even Doc Brown from BttF had a case full of cash, I'm sure Doctor Who did similar), and to the Doctor's surprise, it's IAN from this dimension. The Doctor is tickled pink at the similarities of this dimension. This is just a rough idea of what I got in mind. With some tweaking here and there, I am sure it COULD be feesable to make this work.

@@MoviesWithMarty Also, in regards to this movie: This was actually my first Dalek story. Was watching Dr Who since I was 3 or 4, between 1982 and 1983, on WGPR channel 62 (which was also the first black owned TV station here in the US) and they'd show Dr Who, they were showing Tom's final season and Peter's first. And after we left Detroit and moved to a more rural setting, PBS channel 56 (Detroit's public television station) was airing Dr. Who, on and off during 1985. They started airing regularly in September 1987. And did so till late 1992. Anyhow, 56 NEVER aired Dalek stories, not until about late 1988 or early 1989. First time seeing Daleks was on CBC channel 9, a Canadian channel we were able to get, and one late night in the summer of 1989, Dr. Who and the Daleks was shown. Shortly after that, 56 starting showing Dalek stories. Always liked these Daleks most, (which I refer to as AARU Daleks) with the 1960's Daleks coming after. I like both films, and feel this is one of those times a remake does better than the original in terms of Dalek Invasion of Earth. Though I think it SHOULD have been called "Daleks: Invasion of Earth 2000", because the world we see in this film would make A LOT more sense if these was 2000 or so, since all the buildings and cars and fashions all look mid 20th century. Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future (which is another good series, think Terminator meets Super Sentai) did a better job showing a post atomic horror earth in the 22nd century. Anyhow, this film was my first exposure to Daleks.
