Licence to Kill (1989) Reaction | First Time Watching

I'm slightly sad, that you didn't include the reaction to Bond's dead wife being mentioned. That's one of my favorite moments in the film. The way Dalton plays it is just perfection.

This is one of the best Bond films and I agree it's a real shame Dalton didn't do more. The Living Daylights was good and needed to make things a bit more serious and less silly after Moore's later films, but it missed the humour. I felt this one struck the perfect balance - there are some seriously dark bits but lots of fun too.

Fun watching this with you two! I worked on this film as the double & stand-in for one of the leading actors. It was an amazing oppertunity to work on a big budget James Bond film. Not only were the perks great but being part of some of the spectacular action scenes & stunts was an incrediable experience! It was also fascinating to witness how many of the action scenes were done. I hadn't seen the movie in many years so thanks! 👍

From what I understand, Timothy Dalton actually wanted to return after the legal troubles which caused the 6 year gap between this film and GoldenEye ended (the film was originally written with him in mind) but at least at that time he was only willing to commit to doing one more film whereas the producers wanted him to do at least 2. He completely agreed with the producers reasoning though and the two parties thankfully parted ways on good terms. Part of me has always wished that Timothy Dalton had gotten the role earlier and starred in A View To A Kill instead of Roger Moore.

Probably the most violent and darkest bond ever ;) Sanchez is one of my ALL time favorite bond vilain : He's scary, sadist, dangerous and one of the most realistic vilain in the bond franchise (very underated). I wish we've had more vilains like him in bond movies :(

This is easily one of the best Bond’s. Benicio Del Toro is so young and so EVIL. Such a great villain. Nick, you take the cake: “How in the name of Zeus’s butthole did they pull that off!?!” I’ve never heard a phrase like that 😂 😂 😂

Nice job knowing Carey Lowell from Law and Order, but the actress who played Felix’s wife was famous as Terri from Threes Company.

Bond fact...this film was originally called Licence Revoked, it was called this all the way through production and even theatre posters were printed saying Licence Revoked (I have one) but during pre-release testing in the USA it was found that majority of USA public didn't know what Revoked meant so the title was changed to Licence to Kill.

It is going to be a lot of fun for James Bond fans in the coming week or so as both you 2 and Jen Murray will be reacting to Pierce Bronson's first Bond film, Goldeneye. This is going to be awesome!

I run either hot or cold on this one. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I'm rather put off by the dark tone. Either way, a unique entry in the series. None of it filmed in the UK or at Pinewood Studios. The only time, thus far, in the franchise. And yes. Who doesn't love more Q?

The scene where Bond is at Sanchez’ house, Dalton is so effortlessly suave and cool and badass all at the same time. Craig is amazing as Bond as well, but to me, with Connery and Dalton, they were simply effortlessly cool, whereas Craig does reach that same level as greatness, but it always feels like he’s trying just a tad too hard. I remember seeing this on TV as a kid and didn’t even realize it was a Bond film at first until the music started kicking in during the final truck chase

Traditionally a vodka martini is stirred not shaken, Bond for whatever reason always asks for it to be made what is classed as the incorrect way hence he emphasises it.

This is my favourite Bond actor, but the film is kind of all over the place for me. The villain is better and Timothy Dalton and Robert Davi's chemistry is pretty good. I like the idea of it being grittier and Dalton is the right guy to do this with. But it's a bit too American for me and the tone goes from ultra-dark (there's actually an R-rated version) to pretty silly with Wayne Newton and Q now in the field as comic relief. I like Carey Lowell as the sidekick, but her character goes from being a tough, capable ex-army pilot to a jealous little schoolgirl when she hears that Bond hooked up with Talisa Soto's character and then we're into silly season with the gadgets. I'm also a bit iffy on Bond's relationship with Felix Leiter. Sure, every once in a while, he shows up as professional ally, but there's very little indication throughout the movies that there's a personal relationship there that goes beyond work. All of a sudden the Leiter from Live and Let Die, who is much older than Dalton, shows up and we're supposed to buy that Bond would quit his job to go on a vendetta against the people who maimed his ally and his ally's wife. In a few short minutes, we are supposed to accept a lot. We barely saw Felix in The Living Daylights and I can't remember when we saw him before that. But I do like that they at least had Felix mention Bond's marriage. I just wish they'd done more with the question of whether Bond is doing it for Felix and his wife or if he's doing it for Tracy. Having said that, I'll take any Bond film with Timothy Dalton. He's the most like the Ian Fleming novels.

Pointless trivia: del Toro got a little over eager with the knife in the scene on the conveyor and cut Dalton’s hand. As a result the close up shots are not Dalton’s hands.

Here's an interesting fact. Carey Lowell played ADA Jamie Ross on a couple of seasons of Law & Order. What's even more interesting is that she played opposite Benjamin Bratt, who played Detective Curtis. Benjamin Bratt is married to the other Bond girl, Talisa Soto.

Dalton was my first new Bond and it's a shame he was denied a trilogy of hits. My JB fandom mostly exists within a triangle of Connery, Moore, and Dalton.

Saw this when it came out & I remarked to a friend, "Wow! That skinny henchmen is so intense. And frightening! I think we'll be seeing more of him in the future". I'm happy to have been correct. Connery is my favorite Bond. And I think Dalton, specifically in this movie, is 2nd fave. He was handsome, charming & debonair but could be brooding or rugged when necessary. I had noticed him way back in 1971's "Mary Queen of Scots" as the sleazy, villainous Lord Darnley opposite Vanessa Redgrave. Great film. And even before that in 1968's "The Lion in Winter" with Peter O'Toole & Katherine Hepburn. I was a kid but admired the whole cast & still consider it one of the best films ever made. AND the theme song from this film is in my top 5 Bond themes...the others being.. Dame Shirley Bassey belting out "Goldfinger"... Sir Paul McCartney's bombastic "Live & Let Die"... Sir Tom Jones' "Thunderball" (more belting)... And Nancy Sinatra singing "You Only Live Twice". Her voice was a little thin but the song itself is beautiful & atmospheric. Loved your reaction, guys. And the post-movie discussion. And I agree about Robert Davi. He was a believable villain & even though he was so vicious I also found him strangely charismatic...something about how he openly admired James & seemed anxious to charm & befriend him. The planned to rig the oil tanker at the end so it would drive on just the left wheels, but the stuntman just managed to do it anyway with the normal tanker! The wheelie was with a specially modified rig.

This is different than the version shown in the theater. They extended a few scenes that were considered too gory for a PG13 audience in 1989 • The shark attack on Felix. They showed the leg bitten off. They used an amputee as a stand in. • Krest's head explosion didn't show as much chunky bits originally. • Dario's demise in the grinder shows more guts and blood. • Sanchez burning to death has a few more seconds of screen time. I saw this twice in the theater the summer it came out. Both times the audience exploded in cheers when Bond escaped by waterskiing behind the plane. Dalton will always be my favorite Bond. He would have made a couple more but the 6 year gap because of the legal battles interefered. He was offered Goldeneye and would have done it, but would have had to sign up for four more films and didn't want to so he turned it down. Dalton also insisted that he didn't get all the funny one liners and made sure that Robert Davi had his share as well. This is why Sanchez is the best Bond villain to date.

4:00 Christopher Nolan himself admitted that his entire inspiration for the opening of Dark Knight Rises was from this movie.

Felix and the shark scene is taken from the book of Live and Let Die. As is the macabre note left on Felix. Fitting they used the same actor. Making up for lost content.

Glad to see you guys enjoied this one too... much more tonally darker, but Timothy Dalton really eats up this role, right? And as an amusing bit of trivia for you- THIS was the only Bond film that on its release was not rated "PG-13", but rather it was rated "R" for it's violence and intensity. Now we're off to Pierce's turn... and while some of them can be a little cheesier with dialouge and plot, I really love his take on *BOND* and being the character... I CANNOT WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK and Goldeneye! It's my all time favorite one (hooray best villian ensemble)- hands down! :-)

it's the most underrated film of the franchise based on the box office...darker and grittier, there would be no Goldeneye or Casino Royale without the introspective charm of Timothy Dalton and the vengeful plot of Michael Wilson! no wonder the villain Robert Davi has the best lines, he's a drug dealer!

The darkest, violent and controversial James Bond movie ever made. It was the first film in the series to receive a PG-13 Rating. This was also th first Bond movie I watched on CBS back in 1995 to promote the new film, GoldenEye.

This is the first Bond movie I ever saw as a kid and the one that made me a fan of these movies! And I'm embarrassed to say I never noticed the Felix LIGHTER! I'm a bit dense like that!

I think its unsaid but the Dalton films were a money making disappointment for the producers. The films were excellent but they underperformed. Compare the grosses with the Pierce Brosnan grosses.
