In this amazing special, we see all the surviving Classic Doctors and most all of the companions, we see the 6th Doctor and the Brigadier on screen for the only time ever, we see Liz Shaw rush the Rani to save the 3rd Doctor!! This special is like a theme park live action show, don't ruin it by asking questions on whether it's good or not, just watch the awesome!
Despite the "uneveness"" of this special. It is just soo good to see what was to be the last appearence of many of these performers as their Doctor Who incarantions. I wish somehow some of the footage could be used in an offical adventure.
Thus far, it’s proven itself to be the last official performances of Jon Pertwee as The Third Doctor Deborah Watling As Victoria Waterfield Caroline John As Liz Shaw And Kate O’Mara As The Rani
5:00 im more concerned this scene doesn't make sense since the doctors granddaughter is a timelord herself and some how she she doesn't recognise her own grandfather or the fact that timelords can regenerate considering she already met the doctors future selves in "the five doctors" episode ?? 🤷🏾♂
Remember watching this at 7 years old wishing that they'd bring back Doctor who for the 50th anniversary, my dreams were made true, thankfully the standard is much better these days.
Diamond Song Yeah, to make the Pulfrich effect work, everything has to be in motion. Therefore everyone was constantly running or was standing in front of some ridiculously colourful and spinning background and why there are flying heads. xD
It was part of a 3D experiment.. had to keep the camera moving to create the effect.. the best line .. "well I've seen them thrown out of The Vic......"..cheers
From what I can remember the 3D effect was pretty good. Unfortunately you literally have to have one of the original pairs of 3D glasses to make it work because they weren't the typical red and green 3D glasses
Oh, the documentary is real enough, and a lot of Classic Series fans are looking forward to that more than to the actual 50th anniversary show. Having said that, it would indeed be cool to have David Bradley turn up on the show as the First Doctor!
Shows with less than perfect FX, yes, because the fans are drawn in by the writing and the performances, thus obviating the daft notion that such shows are taken off T.V. for a stretch of decades until they can "do it better." No, I heard the truth, as you can hear it from the lips of JNT, Sylv, and Sophie if you watch "More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS," available on disc 3 of the 3-DVD set of "Shada." There's also the special "Endgame" on the DVD of "Survival."
This one makes me think... I can't wait to see what that have planed for the 50th anniversary doctor who, just to see how many of the past doctors will be in it. Hope to see Tom Baker and Peter Davison
I myself acknowledged that the BBC never dug too terribly deep into its pocket; it shows in other programs they put on, sci-fi examples of which include "Blake's 7" and "Red Dwarf." This did not stop those shows from having cult followings just like DW. You are the one trollishly insisting upon something that simply is not true. DW was not on hiatus when "Dimensions in Time" was made. It had been canceled, axed, given the boot, and chucked.
As a long time who fan, that was painful to watch back then. Its not better now, such a great chance wasted. Great to see people who aren't with us anymore. It always good to watch and realise how much the BBC didn't care about doctor who back then. Its terrible but I can't help watching it once in a while. So bad it might be good
I think the main reason the BBC did this was because they had some new tech they wanted to play with. I remember that this was filmed in 3D and you got the specs as a free gift in that week's Radio Times. The swirling camera action was to take advantage of the added depth that movement in a certain direction gave the film. This is what happens when effects and tech have a priority over script and acting.
Probably THE ONLY special i wish was available on home media (whether it's here in the states or over there in the uk) also, I hope they make a sequel of sorts to this someday. Could you imagine doctors four, five, six, seven, eight, ten, eleven, thirteen, and even the fifteenth doctor appearing on the small screen together for the first time along with their respective companions? (Although thinking about it now I'm not sure if christopher eccelston or peter capaldi would want to return as doctors nine and twelve......but,hey a fan can dream can't he?)
The Rani's assistant Cyrian is played by Samuel West, who played King Caspian of Narnia in the T.V. version of "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" and Victor Frankenstein in the movie "Van Helsing."
Trust me, nobody would care, and a hand-waving explanation would be more than satisfactory. I mean, folks looked at Pat Troughton's grey hair in "The Two Doctors" and just shrugged. Now, they could have the Doctor visit realities where his counterparts never regenerated. As for digital rejuventation, I don't know if even the FX department as it is now could afford to do that.
that's what I thought, but I know in the Five Doctor's special Susan only refer's to the 1st Doctor as Grandfather and doesn't call 5th, 3rd or 2nd Doctor's grandfather, she refers to them as Doctor like any other companion would
It was the original series with its expert writing and superlative performances that kept the fans watching for twenty-six years. The effects were, in many cases, very innovative, and fans did not obsess over them. I was referring to the classic series, obviously. As for the new series, there have been things less than 100% effective; the Raxacoricofallapatorians, for instance. But there's an inversion now: great effects and lousy writing.
"It's laughable and other movies and shows are making us look worse than a puppet show." That could be construed as an attack. I didn't say anything that the folks at DW haven't said; I also said many of them were very innovative. A lot of them were impressive when you take into account the budget, or lack of. I advise you to find the three-DVD set of "Shada." It contains the special "More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS," in which Sylv and Sophie share their memories of the cancellation.
I never attacked the original series. What I meant was it's been said the decision was made to "rest" the show until it could be done with good special effects on their budget (like other productions were being done with). Notice when it got to the point even people with home computers could do videos with really good special effects that DW returned? (Which was an excellent choice on the part of the Beeb.) As for the writing... I dunno. I take what I can get. I like Doctor Who.
I remember that too, To experience the depth effect, get yourself a cheap pair of sunglasses, pop out one of the lenses and wear them whilst watching this.
I meant "even the current series"? Because it was the earlier series and its bad effects (compared to what you'd see in productions with bigger budgets) that was said to have led to the hiatus. "We can't go on doing this the way we are. It's laughable and other movies and shows are making us look worse than a puppet show." Are you saying that the current version of Doctor Who is world-famous for "dodgy special effects"?
I want a follow up special that reveals that the origin of The Rani is really a human girl from Earth's early 21st century who accidentally transforms herself into a Time Lord and regenerates into an evil incarnation before being saved by her friends Clyde and Luke
We need to bring Rani back in the modern series, because if nothing else, I refuse to have this as her last on screen appearance. She is a better character then this.
Camille Coduri's credits didn't include this, so, no, the woman at 4:27 didn't play Rosé Tyler's mum. Jackie Tyler was evidently a caricature of a specific type in London, though
Actually it is. This wouldn't show up in her credits because this wasn't "Doctor Who" this was a cross over with a show called "EastEnders" So, Camile Coduri's credit for "EastEnders" counts as this. Thought she's playing a completely different character. But headcanon's and all that.
Hell no, Peri was the hotty back then. I remember being a little kid and watching that era of Doctor Who with my Dad and he used to say Peri had a nice pair. Didn't know what he meant then but I agree now ;)
Funny about how people get worked up about the special effects. It was the 1970s and the budget was very small! My daughter (who's still only 15) used to be like "But I love the bubble wrap monsters, Mummy!" - when we watched old Jon Pertwee episodes on VHS. She then got scared of it because of the Ood, and only returned recently because she has a thing for Peter Capaldi. But in my mind, the rubbish special effects were what made Dr Who. That and the great acting. X to all.
I would love for this to be released on DVD. I would like real time, death comes to time and shada (animated version) to be released on DVD. also I would like for the crusade episodes 2 and 4 animated for a DVD release, mission to the unknown the whole episode animated and episode 3 of the web of fear with animation. hopefully the underwater menace in going to be released this year to.... the BBC said they would with episodes 1 and 4 animated. fingers crossed.
Made for $1.98. The BBC really didn't really care about Doctor Who at that point. That's understandable, since they (wrongly) felt that the program was over and done. This is REALLY bad.
I attacked nothing. You yourself said the effects weren't done well. Did YOU attack them? I, by the way, AM a "classic Whovian", having first "met" the third Doctor. I've been on board ever since. As for what the series being "cancelled" really was or what it meant, I know what I've been told. Surprised you hadn't heard the same things.
This was meant all along to be almost a parody of the classic series. Look at it. They mixed it up with a SOAP OPERA! Please, don't present this as better than the current WHO. The series was still on hiatus when this was made, and it continued on hiatus during and after. Now it's back. Faster moving, but the return of a hit series. Too bad you can't appreciate that.
Susan raises an interesting question in this charity special, when she tells Colin Baker's Doctor I want my Doctor where's grandfather. When the Doctor regenerates does he totally become a new person that past family ties are cut? For instance when River Song meets David Tennant's Doctor she doesn't refer to him as her husband. (the meeting is the 1st time that the Doctor meets River but the final time River is with the Doctor) She only refer's to Matt Smith's Doctor as her husband
