I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with this amp. I have never played thru any of the Dr. Z amps, but I've always heard good things about them and never heard any criticisms. I always thought that they only made Fender-style amps...shows you how much I know. "Good, old school Marshall" always rings a bell for me too. I like the lack of switches and little knobs which I think takes away from the inherent character of an amp. The "Touch" switch is useful and being able to switch rectifier type is really cool. You can go from a Plexi to more of a JTM-ish type of amp. It looks cool too! So given the choice between this Dr. Z or the 1987X, which would you choose?
Amazing playing Euge.. amazing as always.. Tone is bad ass. very thick. One of these days I have to try an SD-1 with my Splawn Nitro to see what Magic I can get it to make. haha. Keep up the awesome work sir.
Love my EMS, you've got it sounding killer. Did you mention which Borgen IR you are using from the Lead/Clean pack? I bought them after watching this video but I haven't got them sounding this nice yet!
@@EugeValovirta230V If you get a chance, try the MAZ-18NR over the 38. I think you might like it more than the 38. You'd really have to try it in your system to get a feel for it, I think anyway. You'd get a kick out of it. Have a great day!
@@EugeValovirta230V The 38 and 18 sound similar, but different tubes and transformer make them different. The 38 excels at the cleaner and mid gain side, and the 18 excels when cranked. To me anyway. The 18 cranked in a 4x12 is still really loud, but it doesn't kill you, and then you are brushing up against the power tube compression/distortion and it really cleans up well from the guitar at that point. The big bonus is the eq bypass switch. I think you'd like it a lot.

You can do a lot with eq like on the video I posted a while ago so if you’re not happy with the sound of the DSL try eq and see what happens. You can shape the tone a lot 👌.
It's a Marshal with different clothes on. That said, it ticks all the boxes so that's not a bad comparison.........and it sounds awesome boosted with the SD-1 and the solid-state rectification.
Sounds fantastic Euge although they command a very high price. Just bought a Fryette Power Station for taming tube amps - would love to see you review one? Great content as usual!
Price - I always thought that too. But... they are completely hand-wired and made in America (and not that that is better, but it's more expensive in general). If you consider it that way, they start to look like a bargain. Like how much is a hand wired PTP plexi or Two-Rock, just for reference.
Yeah I think that Dr. Z amps are quite cheap considering the quality, they’re handwired and they sound (at least this one ’cos I haven’t tried any others) pretty damn amazing. I actually thought they’d be more expensive. A positive surprise I must say 😎👌.
@@EugeValovirta230V Yes, not "cheap", but very reasonable in the scheme of things. They'll last forever too. As long as they keep making tubes anyway. ;) Another cool thing since they are point to point... when they upgrade a version of the amp, you can send in your old version to have it modified to the new version for a reasonable price, but that's mainly because they are point to point that they can do that.
Hey Euge, can you review a Kemper or an axe FM3? Please!!! I'm saving for a light weight system I can get out and play with. I'm thinking about the kemper with 2 orange 4x12 cabs. I know the cabs are heavy but saw Tommy Victor video and he was using them. Thanks man!!! Your opinion would mean a lot because of your experience.

Can’t remember anymore but sounds like a Drop-D 😎🤟. Yeah I have five different ones from 90s to 2020s and they’re the same. The design hasn’t changed 💪.
Thanks! It’s like all tube amps IMO: some can sound ok without cranking the master but they all become truly alive when you include some power tube mojo by cranking the master. Especially these old school British style amps. That’s where the magic is👌😎.

Like you said, sounds like a hot-rodded Plexi! I'm sure that is what they were going for when they designed it. I would love to see gut-shots of all these amps, but I know you can't open-up an amp that does not belong to you. There is a dude on RU-vid that does that. His name is Tony McKenzie, I think.
Yeah they’re great also. I’ve done a few videos of some of them and used BE & Dirty Shirley on my first solo album. But a good old Marshall is still a good old Marshall 💪😎. There’s a reason why I have quite a few of them 😊.
I’ve played with several Plexi style amps but can’t remember all of them and not what was my favourite. My conclusion has always been, and still is that, only a Marshall Plexi can do Marshall Plexi. And Marshall Plexi is my favourite Plexi 😎.
Johan Segebjorn has a video with a horizontal input 2203 titled 'the most aggressive Marshall'. I left a comment just now asking if he had a chance to look at the guts of that amp and see what is different from the less aggressive ones. He would know, because he has done circuit explanation videos. Most would presume the 2203 ZW has the largest gonads, but no. The *Bad Boy* reigns supreme. I want to know why, so I can account for it when modding my amp. If we knew, then any 2203 might be able to be modded to be very *Bad Boy* too. Plexi amps too perhaps. I suspect it is to do with power supply and filtering.
Sounds like crap and copy as it is, you are good player but to support brand that use and have such fake name to me it seems ugly. Marshall is Marshall and some overpriced copy of dude who hype things will never come close. That is an amp for businessmen without ears and endorsers who are payed to use it - not for a players who seek the good sound and reliable amp that will last for years.
I was joking but yeah it’s all about personal preferences 😎👌. I have many Marshalls and I’ve always loved them but I liked this amp a lot. And it’s not much more expensive than a new 800 or Plexi. I think it’s actually cheaper than a 100 watt hand-wired Plexi. And these are hand-wired also.
@@EugeValovirta230V it is all OK , yes it depends what we like and i often observe what brands do, since i wind pickups and make amps since 1990's not for fame or as primary job but due to love, for that i went to school (I graduated power amplifiers and had to design new IC power amp) etc My point is that here are lot of things which brand use to pump up quality which are myths, like hand wiring for example then ''original'' components etc. Hand wiring with larger components is easier for manufacture when human do work VS PCB in the past people had to drew them with hands. Good side of Hand wired amps or PTP is they can easier for repair with a simple tools but down side is noise issue and radiation that ruins the signal. Anyhow i have nothing against that brand per se, just I dislike name and use of academic title that the owner don't have at all, he is not a doctor not engineer of electronic. Fact that they copy other amps without giving then any credits i my book is not cool but other brands are doing hat as well so hat' nothing new. Also they don't give schematics for an amp so when player is on the road and amp broke down his tech will have problems to repair it. an experienced engineer can mange that but for a player or tech that can be a hell. Regarding price if you like Marshals there are great DIY kits for 200-300$ and any person who knows to use solder can make it. also there are real engineers of electronic who make any sort of custom amps hand wired for under 500 Euros. There are marshals only with a difrent name for 100Eurs 2nd hand in mint condition combo amps, i love such items and search for them in order to help my friends and hard working musicians. Of course i can share that data with you as well, to sent em to you if you like. i don't need anything in return at all. there are such great amps for silly small prices, YERASOV Bulldozer and others can be found under difrent name for 200 Euros literally identical amp made by same people, LABOGA also etc. Same goes for some big names recently i did some tweaks in fender blues junior that is 5 w stronger but they were 220E new with celestion speaker. Have you ever tried out old tube CARLSBRO? they made 1st few 10's amps for Marshall when JM starting out. They are a bit more aggressive but with sweet sound, can be found easy under 500E an old heads. Forgive me if it is to much of writing, probably i'm obsessed with amps to much .
