Hi there I'm very interested in this amp as a audio diy amp builder my only concern is the transformer . I would like to know is the transformer made by hammond . The reason I'm asking is in the past year I have had many problems with there transformers bad manufacturing practices no washers where there should be some. cut wires . Also wires all painted black that you have to clean them off with acetone to see the proper colors for wireing. And some had a bad hum from not having enough plates that caused the humming it's been very disappointing . And know one wants to back them up I like this amp alot and want to purchase one but afraid to purchase one for my son thanks George
I like how the pre-amp gain works with single coils?.......2 things that don’t always play well together. Some nice 70’s, 80’s & 90’s British hard rock sounds. Cathode Biased 6L6 and Triode wired 6l6’s bring a warmth & sag that’s absent from the usual Pentode set up. Sounds like a high gain “Tweed” to my ears. It’s great to see these builders combining their knowledge & experience.........these builders are the last of their kind.
It definitely has a Tweed like character, especially with the volume of the guitar rolled down. I believe the initial prototype was built on the Therapy chassis (which was also 6L6 and low powered Tweed Twin flavor). The Therapy is one of my favorite Dr. Z designs, and it definitely gets gnarly when you wind it up, has almost like an American voiced Trainwreck feel to it...
Great amps. 2 Brilliant men. Alan made some of the best sounding amps. My sd-60 is a tone monster. Top-quality and killer sound. Good to see he is still involved with amp building.
Thank you AJLGUITFIDDLE for the update! Bc I was thinking the same thing! I wanted to hear the high gain and never got an actual "high gain" video. None of the videos on youtube that I have found actually go into using the high gain. They just do blues or 80s crunch lol no actual metal high gain. But so far I'm pretty interested and I use a PRS Archon as my main amp.
@@matthewwright7706 This amps has gobs of gain. Doc really needs to send one to someone who plays serious hard rock and metal and not Scorpions and Kansas...

Feel like The Remedy was a better GAIN platform...for me. I’m not in the high gain family, and have trouble getting down with the crispy, heavy thing? If you put some of the improvements from this amp, on the basic Remedy circuit...? That said, I love what Dr.Z is doing with other builders! Z Wreck is an incredible amp. I’m sure that this one will fill a particular spot for the High Gain player? Bottomline, Z’s ROCK!
@@DrZAmplification I never heard of a tube called 12dw7. Mostly they use 12AX7, 12AU7, etc. Any reasons why Dr Z is using a Tube effects loop instead of a solid state effects loop?
@@waynegram8907 because it’s easy to integrate into an already busy chassis and it sounds better in this design. It started with a solid state loop and didn’t sound as good with some pedals as the tube loop Alan designed. A 12dw7 is a twin triode that utilizes half of a 12ax7 triode and half of a 12au7 triode. You will see them in vintage ampegs often.
@@DrZAmplification Why I'm asking is because I have heard that using tube effect loops causes capacitance looping issues from guitar cables to the impedances of the guitar pedal loading down the effects loop send jack the tube driven output impedance gets loaded from capacitance loading issues. Not sure how Alan has designed this not to happen. But what happens is that the high frequencies roll off a lot and there is an impedance issues.
@@waynegram8907 many loops, solid state or otherwise, have the potential to cause capacitance issues and impedance mismatches if they are not properly designed. A solid state device like a mosfet can also cause these issues. It’s a matter of designing the input and output buffer around the gain stage so this loss doesn’t occur. There is no “one size fits all” solution to this, it’s a matter of engineering the loop to work within the context of circuit itself.
It's nice. The amp is rock to the core. But we have modern ears to contend with. We must dis-thank JM and his fans for that and for driving the last nails into the hard rock coffin. The lid is on pretty tight; I don't think any rock aside from modern metal, woosy country and some tribute band material is going to ever escape. So I don't have much hope for the amp. Sad; it could have strategically carried hardcore rock into lots of new boundaries. Blame it also on those woosey ukulele loving millineals.
I'm not a boomer, I gig playing many styles including some modern heavier styles and its my design. While the demo doesn't really show the full gain available it has about 85-90% of the gain you would find in an SLO but more mid focused and less compressed. The harder you hit it, the more you get. Probably more Gen X, if we really had to get generational. Everyone has a different metric as to what 'high gain' is too. Its all good. Appreciate you checking it out :)
This guy is neither a compelling speaker or player. Maybe get a guy that can actually play metal to demo a high gain amp. I'm sure Don did some sweet high kicks in his leopard print leotards back in his heyday but this isn't a good demo, especially if you're trying to sell a VERY expensive amp.
And neither are some great amp designers great speakers IMO; it goes with the territory -- Bill Krinard, Alexander Dumble, Mark Bartel, Cesesr Diaz, Brandon Montgomery, are all in that league of great amp designers/builders.
Hand wired.. Whoop de doo.. I bet it'll grab some idiots by the balls though. Just like the ones who buy "hand wired" pickups and think they shape their tone so much 😒
