As and owner of the the Cure, I can highly recommend it for the home or studio player in particular. You can use the Volume and Master the get the amount of crunch or clean you want, then use the Level to get that exact sound at the output level you want. For my preference, I replaced the stock JJ 12AX7 for a much improved sound and also ended up changing the speaker to Eminence Josh Smith (because I had it on hand and knew that I liked it a lot).
The Carmen Ghia clean, particularly on the neck pup sounded pretty good to me. I think Jack makes his best magic with a Tele and a Fender combo amp though.
Worth mentioning; the Cure comes with a foot switch with a knob that lets you bypass some or all of the tone stack for a more Marshally tone. I quite like mine. The combination of the volume, master and level lets you get the amount of crunch you want at any volume. Great home amp feature.
There always seems to be this special squish and crunch to every Dr. Z I've heard particularly when you play Fenders through them. Your licks never cease. Cheers to both.
Always nice to hear Jack noodle...Dr. Z amps are really good. Love the sound of all of them! I’ve played the MAZ 18 at a rehearsal studio, and really love it! Z amps are so articulate, they illuminate everything you play. You can’t get lazy... or you sound like 💩 with amazing tone! The Z Plus was a bit of a sleeper for me? Z Plus!
If you can, then a Z in your stable is a must have. I bought the Z-Wreck from John a few years ago and then a Therapy + 12'' Greenback cab to compliment it. I got rid of the Wreck (superb amp but far too loud for what I needed) and bought a Tone King Imperial II from John with great help from Rob.....fantaaaaaastic amp. Really amazing. But I still go back for a bit of Therapy once in a while. Peach...a dangerous toy shop :-D
Awesome video! Love Z amps. If you decide to do a video on high-power models, please do feature the ezg 50. It's my favorite Z amp and it's one of the 3 amps I'm currently torn between. Great playing as always, Jack and that Eastman suits you rather well. Cheers
Thank you for this demo. I have been debating a Cure and a Plus. This didn’t make the choice any easier, but it was very helpful nonetheless. Factoring a reverb pedal into the price of the Cure, they’re about the same price. The Cure sounds more practical for most applications and that Level control is a game changer, but the Plus sounds more inspired.
I can only echo the comments previous. Excellent demo. Brilliant playing and some fantastic sounds here. Wish I could afford one of these amps, but I'd never make it sound like this...
Hi! Great video! I have the maz38 nr and The ems. Both are superb! The ems 80's jcm mode is such a Great distorted sound. Very transparent. You dont need any fuzz or od pedals! Just use my tape echo for some lush roominess. The ezg was an interesting complement for me!
I have a Cure combo and an M12 combo. Love them both but the EF86 amp seems a bit diff in the upper mids. More forgiving...? The Cure is just a perfect example of amazing design and execution. Then again, I've never plugged into any Dr. Z and felt let down. If you can't make one of his amps sound good, sign up for more overtime shifts at the carwash.
Does the Cure have a fair amount of clean headroom? There seemed a tiny bit of breakup there even when specifically trying to show off its clean tone on the strat, and then a little more on the Eastman 335 clone. The cleans from the Plus were orgasmically sweet. I liked the way the Carman Ghia sounded; but with only one volume knob (i.e. no master), can it get quiet?
man how did you get all that crunch...prob has to do with how hard youre attacking the strings...but my maz and ghia have never had that level of just saturation and im kinda jealous.
The CURE's clean sounds seem kinda small and weak.....probably takes OD/Dist pretty well. But holy shit those driven sounds are like the best Blackface grind I've heard😳🤔❤️
