Thanks! This amp wound up not becoming the X-Ray though and is on the back burner for potential future release. What looks to be like new x-ray is really cool though, an old Vox inspired amp.
Infectious enthusiasm with you rocking out. (Almost like youre being hit by electricity). 🤘 Wish there was a local place i could walk in and play one (and charge up my car at same time). ✌️
More gain then the Stangray, which was more of a clean amp this seems to have some grit excited to hear more! I know my favorite amp he builds is the Z80. 2nd fav is the DB4 and 3rd fav def the Z Wreck but you can't beat a Wreck its a do everything superstar amp for sure.
@@-Atmos1 Yay England! My parents were from there (Birmingham). The new one should be even better than this one. This was the first prototype that Z had that was going to be called the x-ray, but it isn't what the final production release x-ray is going to be, and the real one I think is going to be the bomb. This was one was kind of the preamp from the Cure married to a dual el34 output section (cathode biased I think), and I thought it was wonderful. But he took that name in a different direction which is basically a further refinement of his old StangRay amp. Think of it as an absolutely killer rendition of the clean channel on a Vox ac30. The next one I got to test was the ef86 version and that hands down was the best amp I ever heard. So much so that I told Mike (Z) he couldn't have it back and I wanted to buy it. But he said no, I sent it back, then they had problems with that tube in that amp config so they moved to another pentode based preamp tube and that one had some problems. So he redesigned it again around that tube which is the current one, and I haven't heard the final version of that one, but I'm sure it sounds fantastic or it wouldn't be released. Regardless, I'm sure some will be making their way to Peach guitars before too long. It should be a killer, killer amp. He released a video on it today introducing it. And thank you!
@@AdamGotheridge Cheers , thanks for the information . Noticed on Peach guitars website they certainly have a good selection of Dr Z amps . It's going to be interesting for sure when they stock the X RAY . Very cool thankyou 🙂
Particularly the 800 side of the ems. But it still has some flavor of Marshall in it where if you play certain obviously old Marshall things, it is reminiscent of that. I could also say that about some warmer fender tones too. I'm not really sure what it sounds like as a direct comparison, like it's a unique design. I really liked this amp.
Amp sounds super fun 🤠❤️. You are a lucky guy and so deserving of being the guy who gets to test out some of these prototypes for Dr. Z. Can't wait to learn more about this design😎
@@jeffreymills7069 Yes, I'm a lucky guy for sure. I'm not the only guy though, and they have quite a few guys in the shop with great ears and knowledge who provide feedback as well. I'm not sure why I get to try these other than maybe my opinion is from someone not on the payroll. Z knows what he hears, but he takes into account multiple opinions. Regardless of all that, I think this is a fantastic amp and (I think) better than the z28-2 (as good as that is). Lastly, just thanks and most appreciated! 🙏
I've been desperate for a Stang Ray for years, I thought the X-Ray was meant to be a mk2 of the Stang Ray?! Sounds nothing like it, have I got that totally wrong and spent a year excited for nothing?! 😅
I'm not really sure. Mike sent it to me just as is with no explanation so that I would't have any preconceived notions. I also have never tried the original Stangray. Just looked it up, looks like Stangray was ef86 and el84, I'm pretty sure this is 12ax7 and el34. Maybe it's a new design with a similar name? Sorry for the confusion and that I can't be of more help.
