Dracula (1931) COMMENTARY

James and Mike sit down and watch the classic Dracula starring Bela Lugosi.
This was originally made as a feature length audio file, meant for syncing up with the movie. (similar to Rifftrax) This means you would have to own the movie. To make it a lot easier, I cut the audio down to the best parts and used STILLS from the movie instead, seen here for the first time.
To hear the full audio, go here:

I like the original Dracula because of the eerieness, cinematography, Bela Lugosi, and Dwight Frye.

Chandler Chamberland You're right, the movie deserves a masterpiece, way better than the cut down version from Castle Films.

I'd wager that if Bela had slowly opened his mouth to reveal fangs on one of those wide-eyed close-ups the audience would've dropped a bollock It's funny that we see him 'fanged' in our minds, I think the Sesame Street Count has much to do with that

I just watched it last night. The begining really is the strongest part. The scenery, seeing Dracula go about his morning routine, waking up his wives, and then the really tense meeting between Drac and Reinfeild. The lack of music and the long pauses as Dracula stares at him with a painted-on smile. I feel that Nosferatu manages to be creepier, both in it's cinematography, and just how absurdly bizzare Orlock is, but Lugosi's Dracula had more personality, and I absolutely love the push/pull conflict between himself and Helsing.

The Count was his own coachman, who came and fetched Jonathan Harker and brought him the rest of the way to Castle Dracula in the book, and this was kept in this film.

Very late but to future viewers, he was heavily shrouded and unrecognizable in the book and Spanish version. Only in this version is it obviously Dracula.

Dracula's castle (in the book) was inspired by a cathedral in Whitby, England, where he wrote the novel.

Including inflation 5,000$ are about 73,000$ today. For a 10 week job that seems like a respectable salary, considering that movie-making wasn't a hundred-million dollar business back than.

+BuzzKill The math works out. It was 500 dollars a week for ten weeks. Which would amount to about 73,000 dollars today. It breaks down to 7,292 per week. I don't necessarily know that it counts as a respectable amount, though. David Manners, the guy who played Harker, was a much bigger star at the time and made 2,000 (the equivalent of 29,169) per week. That'd amount to about 291,691 for 10 weeks of work.

I watched it last Saturday with a friend and it ended up looking (to an outside observer) like an episode of MST3k. It wasn't that bad but we really had fun commenting on the lack of music, "special" effects, quick scene switches, the slow pace, offscreen action etc. Ofc. we followed it with Frankenstein and The Mummy. Fun evening xD

About the whole "there was no body remains in Vlad's tomb" thing; it's true that Vlad Tepes probably wasn't buried there. To this day it's in dispute just where the body really was buried and if Vlad was ever buried in the original tomb or not. As far as I know, no one has ever found his real tomb yet.

Never read the book, but I have seen the 1979 screen adaption (both the theatrical edit and television edit) and found it really creepy. I've heard good things about the book though. Not surprising considering it was written by the best horror writer in the world. I've put off reading it though because Barlow is so different. In the 1979 screen adaption, he's more like a speechless Count Orlock from Nosferatu (which I really liked) while in the novel I've heard he's more like Dracula from the films (which I probably won't like as much). Still I need to read it one of these days. I am a fan of Stephen King as well as the 1979 screen version, and I've heard the novel's really good.

Very interesting film, albeit a bit outdated, but enjoyable nonetheless. Bela Lugosi is perfect as Dracula and captures the character well. Unfortunately the pacing leaves a lot to be desired, and it's a hard watch. Overall if you want to pretty much the genesis of most horror films this is a good movie and I enjoyed it for that reason.

The reason that the screams were cut in subsequent releases was because of the 1936 Motion Picture Production Code that lasted until 1968. Under this code, a movie could not depict: blasphemy, nudity, drugs, miscegenation, sexual hygiene, childbirth, or ridicule of clergymen. You also had to be very careful with depicting any flags, international relations, arson, brutality, murder, smuggling, death penalties, sympathy for criminals, sedition, cruelty to children or animals, branding of people or animals, prostitution, rape, and surgery.

In Stoker's original novel, Dracula could never turn into a wolf or bat. But he could control certain animals such as wolves and bats. However, in this film, Dracula could turn into a bat and a wolf, and it's stuck into vampire lore ever since then. Just like the 1922 silent film Nosferatu. In Stoker's novel and old vampire lore, sunlight did NOT kill vampires, but in Nosferatu, vampires can be killed by sunlight and it got stuck into vampire lore after that.
