www.getBJJsponsorship.com - Upgrade your passion from a pastime to a profession. || Vinicius 'Draculino' Magalhaes is a 4th degree Gracie Barra black belt. Part of the GB team since the 1980s, he shared a mat with many of the most famous names in jiu-jitsu, including the Gracies, the Machados and more.
With Gracie Barra academies of his own in the USA, Europe and Brazil, Draculino explains how the organisation was the perfect environment for him and his peers to grow, and why the team was (and still is, in his opinion) number one.
He also explains how jiu-jitsu isn't just a sport or form of self-defence, but has the potential to truly change lives.
Filmed entirely at the Gracie Barra academy in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.

I heard many critiques of Gracie Barra BJJ, and I would like to address every single one. For the record, I love ALL BJJ schools. 1. GB BJJ ranking system is very soft. It is based on time tables and amount of hours people spend on the matt rolling. What's wrong with that? As appose to what? Would it be better of students were ranked subjectively. Should teachers promote their favorite students or only students who compete? But let's examine the actual GB ranking system based on my research. An average Blue Belt is given out after 2 years considering the student trains at least 3 days a week. The Professor reserves the right to postpone all promotion for lack of skill or attitude. What's wrong with that. To free roll, a student should have complete the Fundamentals Program at least twice and have 3 stripes or receive special permission. That's 6 to 8 months of training 3 days a week. And, once again, the Professor reserves the right to postpone promotion. Black Belts take over a decade, and stripes on Blue belts can be as much as over a year apart. GB Professors just want the students to keep rolling. Of course people with natural ability can promote a bit quicker. But it doesn't mean a man in his 40s, training as often, as hard, setting side family and fun to train, should NOT get promoted because college wresters are the studs of the matt.2. GB is all about money. Classes are too expensive:Not at all. As a matter of fact, local GB gyms charge between $145 and $165 for 6 - 7 days a week training. I found that virtually every single BJJ gym charged as much if not twice as much. Let's also be honest and say that EVERY gym owner wants to make money. Can anyone find a name of a well known professor who teaches students for FREE? GB prices fall right like any other BJJ gym.3. GB require students to wear their own expensive Gis. They also require rash guards:Well, rash guards are just more hygienic and prevent infection. They should be worn no matter what grappling art a person practices. I have visited many BJJ gyms and almost all have their own Gi style or patch. All good quality Gi range from $135 to $185. BG Gi are Storm brand. They are sold at just the same price as one would get them any place else. And, GB has sales. The only thing is, students do only have two colors to chose from. But if Gi color is your complaint, you shouldn't be practicing BJJ in the first place. 4. GB Schools have a set program that doesn't allow for flexibility in training:This is an idiotic complaint. There are gyms with no lesson plans or learning strategies. A white belt can be learning complicated submissions before he/she even knows what a Guard is. What's wrong with GB creating a Fundamentals Program that every student should go through before joining the Advance Curriculum??? Would it be better if White Belts on first day began to roll or learn a Berimbolo sweep? Why not drill basic positions, escapes, and basic submissions with escapes? It's just common sense. Keep in mind, just because some gyms don't have a curriculum, it doesn't mean having a curriculum is bad. It just means GB is organized.5. GB just floods tournaments with numbers. They don't have legit champions:If a local tournament gets flooded with a bunch of GB people (which doesn't happen that much anyway) and we judge a team based on number of medals at some local event, I see the point. But this is a ONE on ONE contact sport. A world champion is NOT crowned based on how many people he/she entered the event with. World Class Titles are not effected by membership numbers. 6. GB is a franchise so its all about money:Once again, show me a school, legit established gym, that does not want to make a profit (as they should). Franchises limit flexibility on school owners as far as the look and style of business. But, they also help with branding and marketing. Franchises, if run right, are also excellent for assuring a quality product. Martial Arts are not very regulated, that's why we have so many fake Black Belts opening gyms. A team gym (and GB is NOT the only franchised gym out there), assures oversight. This protects the student.

I started jiujitsu under Gracie Barra and it took me just over a year to get blue then I stayed on blue for 4 years and this year I competed more and won my last 3 competitions the 1st comp was sub only then ibjj rules comp which I had to go up against an ultra heavy weight whereas I am just heavy weight so 2 weight classes lower then yesterday I won another ibjjf rules comp and won all my matches by submission and when receiving my gold medal on the podium my professor presented me with a purple belt, was the best day ever and I don't care how much it is and what Gi's I should wear because I started jujitsu to become good at jujitsu and my GB Professor taught me how to enter competitions with the knowledge he has and passed on to me and prove it works and 5 years later my jujitsu is SO much better thanks to my professor who happens to be a GB Black belt.

I see martial arts in general,provides unlimited options for an individual to grow with confidence and any other part of their life that do not only include self defense. Bjj is beautiful, and can be viewed as significant in combat, but i do not limit myself to see other artforms in the same way.

28 yrs of combat sports including 15 of bjj/sub grappling ,5 yrs wrestling,18 yrs itf tkd and 5 of boxing.It depends on the coach if you learn anything outside the dojo,mostly its left up to yourself to apply the philosophy to your life ,if there even is one in the style

Nothing but respect to Gracie Barra, but it is Gracie Humaita that teaches traditional Gracie Jiu Jitsu, and most of the top guys come from Humaita Relson, Rickson, Royler, Ribieros, etc

Your white belt will comes with the gi. If you are desperate to buy a white belt, people tend to sell them on ebay. Hope that helps.

once a week of anything wont help much but 7 days a week of bjj wont help either unless youre coach is smart enough to impart something other than physical techniques,most arent including bjj coaches

Gracie barra is the fucking mcdonalds of jiu jitsu
@s216674
@s216674 8 лет назад
Sure. That's why they keep producing all those champions, because they are poor quality. Yes, they have a successful business model, but they also have a solid instructional program that teaches good jiu-jitsu. So no, they are not mcdonalds.
@kalikaputra
@kalikaputra 7 лет назад
thejokerceso because it's runs like a McDonald's yeah they have champs but the champs all train in Barra and outside of Barra and they flood comps with high numbers. they have have a lot of practices like their Attendence Based grading system that is highly criticise. you have to be in the jitsu world to understand. they are big with huge numbers but you can find small gyms that have way more effective program.programs

This is not true in one way yes Gracie Barra might be number 1 and that's two reasons firstly they are the biggest and secondly people end up joining by leaving heir old organisation and teachers where they originally learnt Jiu Jitsu and then for purely for commercial reasons as Gracie Barra package and control their organisation well that's all.
@martialartsfan7269
@martialartsfan7269 7 лет назад
The same goes both ways. There have been people who left GB and created their own organization. As a business model, GB helps a new business owner establish a business. Now, let me ask you this, in what way does this hurt a new student. I don't care where Draculino learned BJJ. I would love to one day learn from the man.
