Welcome to the lovely experience that is a Vincent Briggs video, It's like your soul having a spa day. I was so happy to see this come up in my subscriptions as I've watched all the others. Going to have to dole it out to myself slowly over the next day or so for maximum delight (and progress on the handstitching I'm doing while enjoying it).

@@dinahfromkabalor Sadly, RU-vid's algorithm 'downgrades' videos where the viewer doesn't watch to the end in one sitting. It sees you as an 'incomplete viewer'; ranking it as an 'abandoned watch' by assuming that the video wasn't engaging enough to hold your interest. Engagement algorithms are a rather blunt tool, and sadly they often harm content creators.

'I put my dragons facing inwards so they can see each other and say hello, because they are of course good friends.' Absolutely delightful! For very thin masking tape, modelmaker's tape goes down as thin as 1 mm - Tamiya, Humbrol, and AK Interactive are common brands. Tamiya also does masking tape that can go around curves.

Yup! I have some 2mm Tamiya and you can get surprisingly tight curves with it because it's got just a bit of stretch. Car pinstriping tape works similarly. Both can be pricey tho unless you find them on sale. But yea, the modelmaking, miniature painting, and Gunpla hobbies (and car detailing lol) niche is a great source for teeny masking tapes. There's also masking fluid (liquid silicone?) that can be painted on and pelled off. Not sure how it would act on fabric/leather tho.

@rollo.q
@rollo.q 3 месяца назад
@@GossamerAtara lol I'm thirty, I don't have a tiktok! Or any social media really. I am also immune to tiktoks allure because it's all just random videos. (Congrats on escaping tiktok btw it's seriously addictive to a lot o people I think) I think you might be right in a sideways sort of way though. Lots of RU-vidrs meander around and don't really say or show a lot, it's not very information dense. Or they drag on when you've gotten the point. It's a perfectly valid style and the dominating contemporary mode, and I suspect it's a reaction against tiktock 'shortform' it's just not my thing. Plus a lot of usamericans/canadians just speak veery slowly and with big gaps compared to my local english so my only chance at maintaining normal auditory processing is putting them up speed. UK/Aus etc style speakers i often watch at normal speed. This video also has real subtitles which means I can watch slower. (Thanks) But everything in this video was relevant or conveyed important information by speech or image. Spaces felt restful rather than endless. Very good editing. Neither fast nor extremely slowly spoken but clearly and precise and every single word to the point and in such a beautiful even voice. The entire video is the experiential equivalent of sitting down to sew to a thousand triangles together - or whatever shorthand for hyperfixation you prefer. And most importantly at no point did I think: this could have been an article.

I did still watch it at 2x speed, I very rarely change that, but I definitely did not realize the length of this video (and no, I don't watch tiktok either, I started doing it because "I need to go to bed but if I put the speed up I can still watch this), so props. Also handling snow with painted-black gloves? That must me some paint, I'm impressed, especially because it looked so smudgeable while painting

I have no idea how I ended up here, but I am so very happy it did. Even though the period is not my jam, nor am I the target audience for menswear, I was utterly captivated. Someone mentioned in the comments how thoughtful you are of the audience and after binge watching your every video I have to agree whole-heartedly. I really appreciate how clear you make the instructions (like in the leafkerchief as of 'don't flip it, rotate the pattern') and why and where. I found it immensely helpful to have someone say 'don't do this because X instead of just 'don't do this, period'. Helps with my scatterbrain.

Absolutely amazing work as always! I don't know what it is exactly, but i really love Vincents videos. Something about the slow, but not to slow tempo, the immensely soothing voice, the soft lighting, giving just the right amount of detail to make me feel I can follow along and actually "get it" without ever wanting to skip any "irrelevant" or too lengthy parts. It is like they have just the perfect balance. As if they achieve the actual "optimum level of arousal" for my autistic brain. It is almost as if I can feel my brain purring the way a much content cat does.

Vincent, I really appreciate how thorough you were in this tutorial! A lot of costuming youtube tutorials can be hard to follow because they sacrifice detail and clarity for time, but your inclusion of every single step of this creation process, from actually creating the finished product to showing your experimentation and mock-ups makes this one of the clearest and most inciteful tutorials I've seen in years. I fortunately have some leftover leather that needs to be used up, I'm looking forward to revisiting this tutorial to make some gloves of my own once I finish my current WIPs. Thank you!!!

I wish I had your level of dedication to 18th century men's fashion but for 19th century clothes. I know, that extra century probably makes you hold your nose, but what can I say, I'm in love. On the subject of putting an image on your gloves (the medalion), there is an excellent video series here on RU-vid that details a DIY intalio printmaking technique using repurposed, thick, plastic packaging and a pasta roller. I'm certain that the technique could be adapted to printing on thin leather as easily as it does on heavy paper. I have a pasta roller and a bit of free time. I'll see about getting some suitable leather from the local leatherworks and maybe do some experiments on your behalf. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I really enjoy them.

I dont think I would ever be sewing leather gloves(although I now really love the idea of striped gloves), but still I find your video very educational and useful, so many tips that can be used on other projects. I really, really, really appreciate your attention to detail (the fact that you decided to make another pair, so that it would show better on camera and not put strain on eyes, wow!). I also love the feeling of pure passion that just radiates from your videos. And I appreciate that you leave in all your mistakes and explain them. We all learn best on the mistakes, even if they are not ours. It also gives others confidence. Its good to know that other also have to "fail" a couple of time before they get their (near) perfect results. Sadly, some creators skip this part. About marking... have you tried used up ballpoint pen? So it leaves pressed in impression. Or maybe typical ballpoint pen? The cheap bic type. It might be even visible on dark colour as it leaves it weird shiny(almost oil slick) residue. Just leave it to dry completely before smudge testing. (I have once destroyed my childhood doll this way, the ballpoint was rubbing of if cleaned it immedietely, but when i left the tattoos over-night... it was permanent). And when it comes to cleaning leather: the magic eraser sponges can work wonders.

I love your humor LOL! I very much would love to make a pair. Those are gorgeous, even if they are prototypes. I am in awe of the tiny stitch work. Thin masking tape can be found in the drafting section or model painting section of the craft stores. But your method of cutting painter's tape is probably cheaper, and more satisfying. It probably would be a good idea to measure for both hands individually, since most people have one side of their extremities larger/longer than the other ever so slightly. I don't know if you have a Tandy's Leather up in your area, but it was always the place my grandfather went to get his supplies.

There are tools you can use to create an adhesive stencil so that, rather than having to peel each piece of tape off, you can remove the stencil off all in one piece. We have a Cricut that we use for many applications, including designing templates for carving woodblock designs and 19th century style quilt appliqués. And perhaps using a small brayer instead of a brush, to use the least amount of paint while getting the most even coverage without seepage under the adhesive.

Hurray! I was so happy to see a new video from you in my feed. This was very interesting, I had never considered how different late 18th century gloves could be in construction from modern gloves. As usual, you have a very soothing voice and way of explaining things, and your instructions/explanations are nice and clear. Also, you should know that I think of you every time I cut open a button hole! I am, unfortunately, one of those people who uses a stitch ripper, and I can feel your despair from that other video each time I do so! Whoops!

I'm not that far in but I am fascinated, I've watched other people make historical gloves but idk this seems extra fancy. I love the details in the design !

Congratulations on your gloves, they are very beautiful. I love them all. I just wanted to say that I have enjoyed this video more than any other I have ever seen. Your attention to detail and your transmission of the minutiae is wonderful. I have had a mild curiosity about gloves since seeing a glove-makers store in London years ago. Thank you so much for your incredible videos, you should be very proud.

For glove conditioning/rehydrating I've used normal Kiwi conditioning oil meant for leather shoes on my hogskin gloves after wearing them for a snowball fight during which they got soaked through. As with any product, you probably want to do a tiny test but they didn't discolour mine, which are a lighter natural brown. I love the way your new striped ones turned out and must now add a green stripey pair to my long list of future makes because they bring delight to my soul.

Both pair of gloves turned out beautifully. I love the cow catchers. I think Howl Pendragon would enjoy wearing these striped gloves. The very slightly rough brown stripes look lovely on that neutral leather. If you would like to keep your needles from getting tiny little biting burs in them from using your pliers to pull the needle though, use a little scrap of leather between your needle and pliers. Using it with just your fingers will make it easier to pull through as well

I really appreciate the extra time and effort you put in to make the plain leather pair. Trying to see all the construction details for the first time on the striped pair would have been difficult.
