Gloves are just plain useful, yet we only wear them in the most extreme of circumstances today- safety in our jobs or against harsh weather. Why did we stop? And if we're going to bring them back for everyday fashion we have a lot of research and work to do. When do we wear them or take them off? What style for what occasion? What colors? Fabrics? And how do we even begin to pattern and make a pair?
The history of glove wearing goes back thousands of years. Examples can be found preserved in Egypt that look nearly the same as our modern gloves. Whether they're leather, knit, lace, or dripping in gold, gloves provided warmth, protection, cleanliness, and above all else- fashion. There were certainly eras where they were more popular- it's difficult to imagine most of the 19th century without some type of hand covering.
The 1920s went all out when it came to gloves. Patterns, appliques, lace, embroidery, buttons, and so much more. Though fashion was far more casual than it had ever been, gloves were still a standard part of everyday wear and etiquette. It would be another 50 years before they faded from popularity for all but the most formal or functional use.

This discussion of gloves reminded me of a story my mom told me about from her childhood in the 1950s. She was about 5 and her mother had taken her out shopping. As she was a proper lady, Bubbe was wearing her white gloves as they were going about looking at things in the stores. Once they had finished, Bubbe told mom that she could have an ice cream cone as a treat because she had been so good and she could choose the flavor. Mom got a chocolate and got about 3 licks in before the scoop of ice cream fell off the cone. Bubbe had excellent reflexes and before she had processed what she was doing, caught the chocolate ice cream with her white gloved hand. My mother remembers the look of horror to this day.

This is an adorable memory to have! I'm quite a bit younger (only in my 30s), but I can remember being put in gloves as a small child for church, but I usually managed to ruin them somehow. I've seen photos of my grandmother as a younger woman in the mid-50s wearing them begrudgingly, but by 61ish, she had completely stopped😂. My great grandmother, though, she kept wearing church gloves at least until she went to the nursing home. I miss seeing it on the older ladies around me, it was always so cool and elegant looking. This "post-pandemic" era sounds like the PERFECT time to bring it back, complete with the general rules for wearing and everything. (I realize we're still battling the illness; just echoing what I've heard this current time being referred to.) We can sell this thing on "eco-friendly" reusable gloves 😂

My mom had memories of hats and gloves from the 1950s, which she shared with me. It's was definitely a different way of thinking, and the white ones were a pain to keep clean. I wish that hats and gloves were more fashionable than they are in modern fashion. I suppose if one wanted to evoke a style from a different era, one could go out grocery shopping and see what happens.

@@TudorositiesbyMaureen my grandmother was in her teens and 20s in the 50s and 60s and she got a gorgeous hat one day and when she decided to wear it outside for the first time, her mother in law, who was a hat maker, complimented the hat by telling her "you'll never wear a hat a beautiful as this one". Wearing hats on a regular basis began to fall out of favour the following season so she litteraly never wore a hat after that one

I frostbit my finger pads years ago doing something utterly stupid, so have to be careful sometimes, especially when handling something cold (like the cold water when watering the garden with a leaky garden hose or handling frozen food)... I inherited some gloves from my grandma and mother, both had just as slender hands as I have now and no one else in the family inherited this trait so I'm kind of the only one who can actually wear them. I also inherited the same issue with always having cold hands so as soon as it gets a bit colder I always have a pair of leather gloves in my bag or in my jacket/coat pockets. Pretty sure my oldest pair is at least 60 or more years old by now, my mom is 70 and I turn 30 this year so the fact that these have been around for this long is just amazing to me.

Military dress uniforms (at least the Marine Corps) still require gloves, as do handbell ringers and altar guild workers (in both cases to keep the oils in skin off of metals that tarnish quickly - brass and silver). So you CAN find modern cotton gloves if you look. But I have memories of when I graduated from little girl cotton gloves to 'grown up' kid leather gloves in the early 1970s.

I am passing on a story from my cousin that I think many here will find amusing. Jane took her 7 you daughter shopping for a dress for Easter. It was very involved because her daughter Emily was already quite particular about her clothes. This mystified Jane because she was a jeans and t-shirt kind of person. Must have looked under the wrong cabbage leaf. So anyway, after hours longer and dollars more than Jane had any intention of spending, Jane tried to make a break for the car. At which point, Emily announced they weren't done yet, because she needed matching shoes, bag and belt. Jane proceeded to remind Emily that she was a child, and her grown up mother didn't own matching shoes and purse. Emily sadly said "I know. We can get those next."

I jumped down the Regency glove rabbit hole a few months ago. I found out that formal dress gloves didn't yet have buttons at the wrists and were somewhat baggy, much to my surprise. They came up above the elbows and were allowed to sag down to the elbow. This allowed a daring bit of skin to be visible between the bottom of the gown sleeve and the glove. Sexy! Most formal gloves were of white kid-skin but yellow "mouse-skin" was also popular. Mouse-skin was actually the hides from unborn calves or goats. (Gross!) I didn't have much hope of finding gloves in that style but thought I would give it a shot. Surprisingly I found them on eBay from a Canadian seller. They are modern gloves made of sheepskin but look just like the extant examples and fashion plates from 1800-1810. There's two different listings. One is a length over 50 cm and one 48 cm. They come in a few different colors including white and yellow. The large size fits my size 8 hands just right. This is the first time I have ever found evening gloves the right size and length. The visual difference they make in a costume is amazing. I highly recommend gloves now.

Regarding gloves to keep your hands clean: As soon as you touch the outside of the glove with your bare hand, you have touched everything the glove has touched. Washing your hands often and using hand sanitizer is more effective for keeping your hands clean, unless you are touching something visibly soiled.

Indeed. As a food service worker (grocery store deli), I spent the entire Covid crisis sighing over the sheer ridiculousness of people's glove wearing habits. I go through the best part of a box of disposable gloves in an 8-hour shift because you have to change them with each change of task or each touch of something not food-safe-clean. You remove them by hooking a finger inside the wrist and turning them inside out so that you never actually touch the contaminated outside surface. Obviously this doesn't work with leather fashion gloves. Just wash your hands. It's easier and more effective. :D

This is so fascinating, and as someone who's trying to bring gloves back I have Winter pairs summer pairs daytime pairs and evening pairs for all seasons in several colors and fabrics. Also come at the idea of wearing gloves to keep your hands clean especially during these covid times means you don't have to dry your hands out with all the Over washing

As a small child, my Mother took my sister and I shopping for new shoes, hat, purse and gloves for Easter each year. It was so much fun and it took the whole day. Mother was frazzled by the end of the day, but apparently she had fun too as she kept it up until we were in high school! I still buy a new hat each year. In 2001, I was diagnosed with an illness that makes me allergic to the sun, so I wear hats and gloves all year round. I wear gloves both inside and outside except when washing or eating. I get lots of compliments, from both men and women, so I think many people really miss the days when women wore hats and gloves all of the time.

Forgot to mention that I took an etiquette class as a child in early 70’s and was taught that one removes gloves beginning with little finger. Also, for evening or 3/4 gloves it was proper to unbutton the wrist and work the hand out, tucking the fingers of the gloves up into the wrist so that you didn’t need to ruin the line of the covered arm and the need to find somewhere to keep your gloves for the entire meal or night of dancing.

Oh my goodness! I wish I had known that. I had a pair of white kid leather, and a pair of fine suede mustard gloves, both pairs elbow length, with button wrists. Knowing that trick would have saved both pairs from dirt and lipstick smudges.

One little glove tidbit I learned from watching History Cold Case - Bodies in the Well is that during medieval times one of the preferred leathers for gloves due to how thin it was, was cat hide. Not a leather I would want to use, but I had never heard of it before.

Speaking of glove ettiquette...a marvellous resource for this and other 20s fashion advice is Emily Post's etiquette book from 1922. It's called The Blue Book of Social Usage and it's available as a pdf online. It has whole chapters on both men's and women's clothing and what's appropriate when and where.

Agreed! As someone with lifelong eczema on my hands, I have particular reasons to wish they were standard more of the year (saves me embarrassment, leather helps protect them, etc) but I also love the look of them. I'm disappointed that the Theo in Hill House didn't translate into everyone jumping back on wearing gloves more often. As it is, I have to wait out the warmer weather months in order to not look like a serial killer in my leather gloves.

You're so clever. My mum always used to say " A lady is known by her neat boots, gloves and pocket handkerchief". Her mother was a true late Victorian which is why it was such an old fashioned phrase. As children we wore white, holey gloves in summer for going out in a smart dress. I still have two pretty Victorian glove boxes which we important because leather gloves were an investment.

I always LOVE gloves as far I can remember. I remember asking my mom to buy me "sapu tangan" (napkin) thinking it's the same thing as "sarung tangan" (gloves) and got SO disappointed when instead of glorious gloves, I got squared towel-ish napkin (it was cute though, I didn't protest because by then I knew it was my fault for misspelling what I wanted) I love how it looks with dresses, with suits, jackets. It doesn't really go with "casual look" but I'm not casual anyway, so I would love to also start wear it more!😊

I remember when ladies wore hats and gloves to go to town. There are some ways in which I am glad we don't have to be so formal (wearing nylon stockings held up by garters on your girdle in the summer...ugh!) but I think I prefer formality to seeing women in oversized t-shirts, leggings, and fuzzy slippers at the grocery store! The making of your fabulous gloves was fascinating. I have always thought it would be nice to have handmade gloves, as my hands are large and my fingers are long, but I'm not sure I would enjoy the intricate process!

I have been wanting vintage gloves for a while, and had to make some gloves for a cosplay for a con last week, and so I thought it might be good practice for making a daywear version! @@NicoleRudolph Hi Nicole, I sew exclusively with a 316G Singer sewing machine which can also do zig zag stitches but everything else I sew on antique machines from the 1900's-1920's so I would have to forego double needles. The leather I used was quite thin, but probably not thin yet and not stretchy enough to try to make a right hand archery glove, but it was definitely interesting and I use the glove sometimes. I would be very interested in a video on the different properties and strengths of leather, as there are many differences, including when it comes to getting wet, as I am interested in sewing medieval shoes. Finally, dear Nicole, it should be mentioned that I love your videos, it is a pleasure to listen to you and to be part of your work

When I was young ladies always wore gloves outside of the home orbit formal occasions but no longer at intimate teas and certainly not at table unless it was a white tie occasion. Also in the 50’s a lady could unbutton the wrist and fold the glove back so she could smoke or drink as these two things were general. My Granny told me that up until the end of the First War the ladies always went to their own smoking and sipping room. They would replace their gloves before they left the dining room. The gloves you are showing are mostly outerwear gloves. When I was tiny we had to wear gloves to Church. Boys and girls. If us boys were required to shake a person senior to us we were required to remove our right glove to shake hands, like the Vicar after service.

In the 40’s &50’s my mom had a love/hate relationship with gloves. She needed them to be a well dressed lady working in an office, but it meant she couldn’t read the newspaper on the subway ride in because the ink rubbed off on them so easily. One didn’t want to be seen with smudged gloves, and you certainly wouldn’t take them off on a dirty old train. From the 60’s to the mid 70’s we only wore them to church, especially Easter Sunday. It was a big deal to get gloves with lace trim to wear on Easter.

In DAR, it's still dress code to wear gloves in the evening and with a hat to memorial services, particularly for receiving lines, as it's hygienic for shaking lots of hands. Being in DAR has gotten me wearing summer gloves more to church and restaurants, and I wear a hat most of the time too. Would love a wider selection of colors to match hats.

Nicole, such beautiful and intricate work! I wanted to applaud you at the end! I love the gloves! I appreciate your research and your presentation style as well. (Also, I love that your videos are clean enough that I can watch them around my family without worrying about offensive language. My son wandered into a lesson on the history of jeans and graphic tees while I was folding laundry yesterday!) When I was a teenager in the '90s I sewed a few pairs of vintage-looking gloves on my machine, using my older sister's long spandex prom gloves as a pattern. The stretchy lace pair and knit cotton ones turned out best. It was really fun! But wearing them to church and casual parties undoubtedly helped solidify me in the eyes of my friends as the strange, awkward, homemade, homeschooled girl I definitely was.

The final reveal was impressive. Those gloves are stunning! Whatever one wears to an occasion, those gloves will be what everyone will remembers and returns should the wearer mislay one. Excepting shoveling snow, I have stopped wearing "traditional" gloves for warmth. Mostly due to the simple fact that I ALWAYS lose one glove. I tried buying dups and guess what, 3 right handed gloves left from purchase of 3 pairs. I went right down hill when I aged past those toddler gloves that attach to snow suits.Oddly enough, I have been able to "hold onto" fingerless gloves. A plus for those gloves is that right/left is not as big an issue.

When I was in St. Louis (MO) years ago, I frequented a local antique store. On several occasions I was able to purchase hand sewn gloves. My favorites by far were the ones with the seams on the OUTSIDE. I'm sure they were sewn with a wider seam and trimmed down as far as possible, but they were glorious to wear. Inside seams in gloves grate on my hands. Seams on the outside (it 'seems' to me, LOL) make the finger look longer. I have, since then, tried to locate a pair of leather gardening gloves with outside seams. Alas, they are not to be found (not by me). With your video, I can make them. Thank you. P.S. One difference with my 'fave' pair and your blue ones is that the seams were not whip stitched on the edges of the fingers. They were straight stitched. But maybe for leather working gloves, doing both is advisable?

I had several vintage pairs of gloves in suede, kid, knit, and cotton. One of my favorite pair was brown suede with straight-stitched white thread seams on the outside. Back in the 80s and 90s the prices were reasonable. The gloves did not last, though, because I wore them constantly.
