Car versus bike. Bike versus car. You'll see it before and you'll see it again, but here is the latest take, with a twist... Does Audi make quicker cars or motorcycles? Subscribe now: smarturl.it/aut...
OK, that's slightly tongue in cheek, but you see what we did there. Audi owns Ducati, so we thought we'd take the two mainstream sports products from both of their respective ranges and see how they get on, head-to-head.
In the four-wheeled corner, then, the Audi R8. Not the Plus version, just the regular R8, with four-wheel drive, launch control, and a 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine to be getting on with.
And in the two-wheeled lane, a Ducati Panigale V4. The new four-cylinder sports bike from Ducati, which has only 1103cc, but still pushes out 211bhp. And it, too, has launch control. Goody gumdrops.
So let's see which is quickest to 60mph, 100mph, across a standing 1/4 mile and a half mile. It's going to be the bike, right?

Majority of bike Speedos overread by around 10%, so when 299km/h or 186 mph is indicated on speedo, it carries on accelerating as the bike isn't actually doing that speed. Minus 10% from 299 = 269km/h. minus 10% from 186mph = 167.4 mph. Most litre Bikes are limited via their rpm in 5th 6th. ECU can workout actual top speed via rpm x gear ratio multiplication.

Only for japan bikes. Even those get over 300kph it is only the speedometre that stops at 299

I own a 2019 Ducati V4S and a 2017 Chevy Z06 with much grippier than stock tires out back. It is absolutely a blast to take off the top on the Z06 and go out just to dump it from a stand still or do a 190 mph pull with the air and the g’s just whipping you. That said, as much of a car guy as I am, there is just nothing like the feel and and raw power that the Ducati V4S delivers to the body and its senses. I do hate the debate over which is better (cars or bikes), the whole thing is nonsense, it is subjective, not to mention, it is two totally different experiences. I love both and would happily take either out for a cruise or track day. We are all motor heads, so lets just enjoy this incredible time in history where we have such amazing machines that defy simple logic. If the thing is fast enough to make you cream your pants in a straight line or through a corner, why bother worrying yourself with what someone else’s toys do. Live fast, play hard, and don’t stop enjoying the speed of life.

I thought that too, it seems a number of fast motorcycles are in the 2 second bracket, however it's hard to actually ride a bike that hard from a standstill and they did say the rider feathered the clutch some, perhaps if he'd just let the launch control, traction control and anti wheelie electronics do their thing it would have been quicker, but don't blame him for putting self preservation first.

In the video they said he had to ease in the clutch to avoid a wheelie. So def can go faster. The rider wasn’t experienced enough to launch it hard.

They can be faster, but I won't knock a really good rider. 0 - 60 really isn't in most sportbikes mission statements. I have a 2016 Diavel S, longer wheelbase, wider rear wheel. Getting under 3 with the launch control isn't super hard, but after that the V4 laughs and runs away. And cornering? That's another story.

Exactly. I believe in 1998, Sport Rider Magazine got a stock ZX-9 to do 9.99 in the 1/4 mile and this bike was overweight and underpowered compared to this Ducati.

We call motorcyclists Riders, supposedly knowledgeable OP, not drivers. You don't drive a bike, you ride it. Secondly, the drag-strip argument is moronic. A bike lifts its front wheel, it doesn't spin its wheel unless you're riding on a terrible road which this runway clearly doesn't classify as. This bike should be doing very low 10s riden properly.

226bhp can only be done by the speciale with akra fitted. You can do whatever you'd like on standard v4 and you won't achieve those numbers.

The engine is the same across the V4 lineup. So fitting the Akrapovic exhaust and ECU flash will give the same results for all 3. The only difference is that it's an add on for the base, optional for the S, comes with the Speciale.

211hp and 198 kg vs. 540 hp and 1640 kg. So just to keep things really simple and round off. Basically a 1 hp to 1 kg vs. 1 hp to 3 kg. The bike has a monstrous power to weight advantage. That's why modern superbikes are so fast.

@@felixcontreras1687 It's not really about the power, but more so the incapable rider. All Supersports are pretty much equally difficult to launch regardless if they have 190hp or 220hp, it's still gonna flip the bike equally from a standstill. When other people with similar bikes consistently get in low 10s and some even in high 9s, it's awfully obvious that the rider choked and messed up the run in order to get a woeful time of 11-something. He short shifted and messed up going from 1st to 3nd, and clearly struggled with the launch control as well (which should be far better than that). Of course it's hard to launch a bike like this, and it's not meant for drag racing - but regardless of that, an 11 second time is awful and not representative of its actual capability.

I took my 2016 R1s down the 1/4 mile at the same speed the new Ducati V4 did in this video. Now I feel a little less bad about my times considering I am not a professional rider and it was my first time at the drag strip.

the bike does 0-60 in 2.8s and is not only the fastest street legal Ducati but the fastest street legal motorcycle on earth this dude got slower times because he was feathering the clutch incase it wheelies and he cannot control it but I know a regular rider that can get 2.8s

Given the respective power to weight ratios, the bike was always going to win. Audi: 330bhp/tonne vs Ducati: 1065bhp/tonne. As we can see from the video, even factoring rider weight is still not enough.

Andrew Rogerson yes and no. The bike won this time because it had launch control, wheely control, and you don’t need to press the clutch to shift when accelerating. Now take an older super bike with as much power to weight ratio that doesn’t have those assists, and the car would probably win.

it's not fair really , motorcycles dominate cars up until you get to the category of actual track cars , but then you bring track bikes and the results are close. But when you to the f1/f2 level this where the bikes get lapped , even a motogp bike will get lapped by an f1 car.

@@kris955i2 I haven't seen a single tire come in over 10k unless it's a dirt cheap low wear tire meant nothing to cruise on. A lot of people don't seem to know when sprockets and chains are bad... Around 10-15k you should be changing them. This is an average mileage if you're pretty negligent of it.... 20kish if you're actually maintaining it.. Valve adjustments.... I haven't seen anyone on the track not having to check it and readjust it.... Most of the street guys usually can go double or triple the mileage before needing one, BUT the track guys are the only ones I've seen that actually have to stay on alert with it.

Car guys, look, bikes really don't do 1/4s well, fact, I've been riding fast bikes including Busa's S1000rr etc find 1985, launching a very quick bike is not easy so even your average quick rider will stuggle to get good times 1/4mile. Autocar 0-100 challenge used to see bikes doing 60 in 3.2 100 in 5.6, for 1000cc bikes against cars. unless you strap a bike down and have a pro drag ride that's your lot simply down to physics of getting 200hp off the line. What you have to realise is the bike will do 90mph in first gear, so it has a long way to get to the max power (revs) of the line, and even then it won't take full throttle so the car has a huge advantage. the bike will only deliver max acceleration second gear, and that's after 100 in most cases. 1/4 mile times don;t tell you anything on a bike, they really don't. Ride a very quick bike, and it's the 80-160 time that's the impressive part. Just an explanation anyhow, and for reference I've owned a 350hp Atom, and lots of bikes.

Wouldnt be close at all. This rider clearly isnt familiar with the bike or just trash at launches. A panigale v2 does a standing 1/4 mile in 10.4 at 136mph and the panigale v4 has been clocked at 9.76 at 155mph. Pretty much every litre bike is capable of doing a sub 10 second 1/4 mile. I have personaly done a 9.9 second 1/4 mile on a 1999 zx9r that is around 70bhp less than this ducati here. Its all about getting the balance of full throttle and keeping the front wheel down and not breaking traction.

I love half-mile runs; they give a chance to see the nice gamut of acceleration characteristics. Like with the P1-918-Ducati 1199 run from a few years back; that would have looked completely different without the higher speed end.

Obvious results. R8 V10 Plus would've put a better show. It does 0-60 In 3.0 secs compared to simple V10's 3.4 secs. Although I think Ducati would've won anyway but would've been closer

For years now Ducati has made it so that if the indicated speed of their bikes exceeds 186 mph or 300 kph, the speedo will shut off, but the bike will still be accelerating.

1979 as a 20 year old I put $A17 of fuel in my car. Being a tightarse I bought a Honda CB100 (100mpg) to save money AND with the ability to lane split (mainly to get to the front at traffic lights). Even my little bike could get that start so I could quickly get into a lane (annoyed the hell out of commuter car drivers but nobody was stopping them to do the same).

Always fun to watch these. But the end result is the same. For those butthurt car enthusiasts. Keep in mind that doing a quarter mile in 11.55 seconds is well slower than even a 20 year old 600cc motorcycle. The R8 plus would have still lost.

The rider totally botched the launch. Despite the announcer saying he "feathered the clutch to keep from coming off the back," you can actually hear him DUMPING the clutch quickly and bogging down the motor, and you can HEAR HIM ROLLING OFF THE GAS after that. Bullshit "launch" and still made 11 seconds.

If people want to experience true 4 wheel excitement, then the best way is getting into shifter karting imo. These supercars are fun of course, but if you consider the fact that in most cases motorbikes can give you a lot more fun for a lot less money, then it just makes me forget about these supercars.

Just a note, Motorcycle News did a GPS speed test on the V4S and clocked it at a GPS confirmed 191mph. And given speedos over-read, when the bike's speedo goes blank at 186mph, it's safe to say you're probably only doing being 170 and 175mph actual speed. So yeah, that Ducati's pretty bloody fast.

so whats the benefit of launch control? its significance is described through the efficiency of the algorithm that controls the actual drag race outcome. you could have put the ducati in automatic drag race mode letting it drive the straight line without a driver thus saving 1/3 of the weight and increasing the power to weight ratio even more.

Let's look at real world numbers. 540bhp less ~15% for transmission loss giving us roughly 459whp, driving a weight of 1640kg + ~85kg for driver giving us a total weight of 1725kg. That gives us a power to weight ratio of around 266bhp per tonne for the car. Using the same formula on the bike, with a 90kg rider (added 5kg for helmet and leathers) gives us a p/w ratio 621whp per tonne. I'd give this one to the bike.

10.84 standing 1/4 for the bike. Sounds about right. Now, drop the rear suspension down as low as it will go, and use a clagged old ratchet strap to winch down the front of the Duke, run about one pint of petrol in the tank, and do it again, and if that bike can't run 9.84 I will stand rooted! Put a good rider on it, who knows how to do this, and it would probably go below 9.5.... Total cost of your "performance mods" is about $5 for a ratchet strap.... Also, I see those tyres are not scrubbed in past about half way. Either that bike has been ridden by a complete old woman, or a rider who doesn't know what he's doing, or the damn thing is not even run in yet.... If it only has a hundred miles on clock, you shouldn't be drag racing it....

@@ekomdeepsingh3938 but the haya is mean road bike sure it might not be technically as fast as modern era superbike but from a dig on the street most of the time the hayabusa mass help gets it off the line faster and maintain its speed much faster and going fast on the haya for prolong period is extremely easy with its massive fairing and weight it has this stability that cant be compared a panigale is superflighty at above 150mph while the haya or zx14r is rock solid blocking all the wind the new breed of lightweight 200hp plus superbike there short wheelbase and low mass make them hard to handle without electronics and electronic tend to cut in to early sometime i'm willing to bet 10 out of 10 quarter mile drag race a stock hayabusa will easily beat a stock v4 or s1k those superbike might have the faster time ultimately but they wont be consistently fast any small mistake will ruin there time overall they might be ultimately faster but practically the hayabusa is faster in a straight line

MotoGP bike would be the equivalent of a F1 car, and MotoGP bikes are faster on acceleration. F1 faster through the corners and braking. That is a superbike that is less than BSB level, Guy Martin although very talented, wouldn't live with the likes of a MotoGP rider on a track. Guy is great at road racing.

Torque has nothing to do with it. At those speeds you need power to overcome the air drag. At high speeds, high-powered cars have better power-to-weight ratio than bikes after the air drag has been subtracted.

That's correct. However, the POINT to drag racing is to 'get mass moving as fast as possible'. For street legal vehicles, motorcycles typically have a huge advantage. It's all about horsepower to weight ratios, and motorcycles usually have the advantage, in spades. For top speed runs, cars typically have the advantage because the manufacturers don't set speed limiters on cars, which is done on motorcycles (for some immensely stupid reason).

Dont get me wrong tc is a game changer but lc isnt good enough to beat an experienced rider yet, however how its advanced since my first k1rr in 10. I reckon they'll make it better eventually!

Quattrings If you want the v10 plus,you have to also take the better version of the panigale. Like panigale So or superlegera You can't take the time of the v10plus because it was done on different roads with different conditions. The runaway on this video is not proper for quarter mile but the length is good,so the surface conditions is negligible. Motortrend 1/4 test are usually done at a proper drag strip as they want the best and most consistent numbers so they can compare all the cars equally. Plus if you really like bikes . you'd know that they can get high 9s fairly easily,bone stock. At the end of the day both are fun with its own advantages, I will always choose both as they are both a machine to make you smile.

Sport bikes are not limited to 300km/h (186m/h) because of safety. It’s because of the requirements of the Super Stock Class in racing competitions like WSBK, BSBK, MotoAmerica,… All advancements in technology coming to mass produced bikes are developed in MotoGP competition, then tested and improved in the aforementioned competitions. To significantly increase the top speed you’ll need to replace the gears as well as other, not so expensive parts. Hopefully this clears some misconceptions about the top speed limit.

What you've wrote makes no sense. The bikes are not limited to 300kph, it's just the speedo stops reading at 299kph/186mph so that the manufacturer's "official" top speed is said to be 300kph/186mph, but many will carry on beyond that but the speedo reading will stay the same.

I thought that motorcycles being limited to 186mph was a 'gentlemen's agreement' between the Japanese manufacturers and that the European lot weren't part of it. I thought that's why the original BMW S1000rr set a new benchmark for superbikes because it had more power. Ok it had more advanced electronics aswell but power matters.
