In this video, the Polo and the Clio go head to head on the quarter-mile drag strip. The race took place at sea level on a cold day, so Ashley Oldfield and Ciro De Siena braved the elements to bring you this cracking race.

Recently test drove one of those clios and it felt quick, seeing it out launch the polo by a decent margin now thought it would stay in front for sure , the polo is very impressive.

The Polo might be the quickest in a drag race, it might also be the better built and all but the the Clio whipes the floor with it in terms of looks! Don't get me wrong, I like the normal Polo for being discrete but the Gti misses something in terms of agression.

Those negatives are my positives. Makes me like the Polo more. For thrashier, noisier, more 'fun', theres also others cars like the fiesta st and hyundai i30-n. But the polo is more sedate, refined and more suitable for me as a daily driver. Oh and to me, the Polo is one of the best looking cars on the road. I think its absolutely beautiful. (not that the clio is ugly). Got one coming next week and cannot wait. I shouldnt have clicked on a drag race video, so unimportant. All these cars have more than enough power for us. Are we race car drivers? You get the clio and i get the polo - we both happy!

Generally the VWs push out more power than the spec sheet. Dyno'd my old one and it pushed around 143kw instead of the claimed 132kw

I know that track performance isn't in direct correlation with power, but two cars wich are close in power to weight ratio, track race would win one with better brakes and stiffer suspension and chasis, and also with cup tyres. BTW... Polo has far more powerful and better engine which is thermal and dyninamically less stressed.

@@fedjadrndarski5606 the gear box is far better with shorter gear ratios in higher gears (think the GTi has 7 speed and the Clio has 6) which gives it quicker acceleration at higher speeds and more time in the torque bands.

Don't be fooled by the R375k asking price of the polo. You still need to add extras, there is probably no cruise control, slip differential, panaromic sunroof etc... On that car... All in all to have a full house you must pay over R460k for a polo

Rob Potato in gear acceleration can be determined which makes more sense in real life non track scenarios

@@springbok4015 well the scenario that I am thinking of is when I overtake a truck on a highway. I need my car to respond quickly from 30 kph to 60 kph so I can overtake it. That is the purpose of the rolling race test. Check out the videos from carwow.co.uk.

I must say that, I was quite surprised that the Renault took the lead off the line, but what was even more surprising was that the GTi caught up, even though it had less top end power. With that said I think the Polo gives a bit more for your money.

The best way to get any gti (golf or polo) is to use manual mode take off to 2000rpm then floor it. The launch mode is not the best. The polo gti would be way faster

That’s very true the manual mode is something else it just goes like literally smashed this Nissan skyline he was making noise so I put the clio cup sound then put in sports mode I left him for dead in the Manuel mode my dashboard was lighting up

The price for the Polo is way out! Go fully spec the polo to match the tech in the Clio and it will be around 470k

Just a word of suggestion: when you do the tests, please mention what brand of tyres are fitted to a given car. I have a Polo Gti on the optional 18” rims and that comes out of the factory with Bridgestone Turanza tyres.... now I know VW wants to make a living and earn as much as possible per car, but a deal between VW and Bridgestone to fit a touring tyre on a hot hatch is the most rediculous thing out there... those tyres have no grip on launch... none... Just by replacing them with Michelins PS4, the launch and the times have improved dramatically without any mods to the engine.

I think Ash's last upshift also kind of costed him..he could have held the gear slightly longer since the finishline was getting closer.. I'm just pulling that out of my ass though coz I don't know where the rpms were anyway, if the engine was already at peak power then ai there was nothing he could do..

Ma per forza che "sfigura" , la Clio l'hanno presa in versione rs Trophy e pure in una edizione speciale che è la 18 F1 quindi nella massima espressione che una clio possa avere , la polo l'hanno presa con i cerchi base da 17 , se ne avrebbero presa una con i 18 almeno, reggeva più il confronto.

0-100 is the most irrelevant test of all time. looks are subjective, not everyone may agree. 2.0 tsi, better interior, more room, all of that makes polo better. if i lived near the track and had plans to go to it, i'd probably get the clio, but again, in that case, i'm not sure i'd buy any of hothatches in this class..

For 2019 Cars.Co.Za Renault Clio RS 18 F1 = R460 000 (+Best Exterior) - Interior looks a bit shitty. Volkswagen Polo GTI = R390 000 (+Best Interior ) - Exterior is just too plain. That's 70K to use on Extras or Fuel or Tires :D + You're driving, so you spend time Inside the car. You want to feel comfortable. + Your passengers can range from 0-100(Pregnant lady to Great Grandad) and anyone in-between even for business. & for the PetrolHeads How embarring would it be to have a Heavier Cheaper Car Keep up with you & Eventually beat you in a Drag Race?

People with affordability issues like this line, Crime is everywhere in 1st world countries even, i know this cause i have lived abroad. Thieves steal any make for whatever their reasons are. I have owned a VW Polo, VW Golf 7 GTI& VW Golf 7R amongst other cars to date and nothing has happened to them so your point is?

clio rs has such bad acceleration it's disappointing, just a better start but on 0 200 it's so bad & eaten easily by polo gti.megane rs has the same problem , not enough acceleration compared to the hp amount

Can anyone give their opinion, just recently bought the new polo. I'm at 1200kms but the petrol is just terrible. I fill in a full tank and i drove 17kms and its already a third gone of the full tank, i get roughly about over 200kms for a full tank. Im currently at 80km amd its just below the half Guage.
