We've all heard the saying that a tenth in the 60 is worth at least double that at the end. Well, we wanted to see if that is true while comparing drag radials to high-performance street tyres. We've pushed our R32 GT-R pretty hard on stock engine and street tyres. Lets see what it does with a set of Hoosier DOT Drag Radials bolted on.

I have always said, tires are EVERYTHING. The right tire for the application can make all the difference. Like you guys have stated near the start, no point over doing it, with a drag tire at least. But once you can no longer get the power down, tire upgrades are a must. For corner carvers like myself, tires are huge regardless of the power. Get the best tires you can afford and that alone with no other mods will cut lap times a fair bit. In the end, those little rubber patches are all that translates your commands into action in a car.

+Jack Campbell We wanted to change brake pads before we did the test as the pads we were recommend after what we asked for wasn't in stock ( not by CC Brakes) turned out to be rubbish. We will fit the new pads and get the test done after GT-R Festival when work load calms down.

+Road to Adventure Comes down to time and money. We're out to my bust a cheap brake kit, not to compare pads. We would have to buy every pad and spend thousands of dollars yet out the video would be lucky to make hundreds of dollars in revenue

+MotiveDVD i was thinking a long term test, one pad cycle, recording thoughts on street performance, some basic braking tests maybe some circuit stuff if you take it racing, using the same rotor and just replacing pads as required would be a decent overall back to back

+Road to Adventure That sounds even more time consuming an complicated than our normal brake txt which is just 20 hard stops in a row from 100km/h! We will report on the ones we use, but doing it to a lot of them is simply a massive exercise. Speaking from experience though, your favourite brake pad is Project Mu HC800. Nismo R pads are also good

This test is actually more accurate with four wheel drive. Do to a more even weight and ride height typically found on all wheel and 4wheel drive cars

Drag radials have a softer sidewall, and are much worse for cornering. You want a soft sidewall to flex (picture a flat tire) and give you a bigger contact patch for more forward grip. For cornering you want a stiff sidewall to keep the contact patch from moving around which makes the car responsive and stable.

Sidewalls that flex while cornering also ruin proper traction.

Of course, but these tires aren't designed for autocrossing. I've used Nitto 555R drag radials on 3 separate daily driven cars. They are probably the hardest drag radials out there, but actually have a little bit of tread depth and are still good for 1.7 60' times on my RWD cars. Not to mention I typically get over 10k miles out of a pair. There are softer DR's including the older bias ply Hoosier QT's and ET Streets that make the car feel very floaty and are for straight line only, but I think the new crop of drag radials out there will still give you cornering confidence at 7-8/10ths driving.

Ah.. Yea, I would imagine he means in comparison to a full drag slick or the really smooshy older drag radials which have a similar build to slicks (wrinkle walls) with a slightly harder rubber and a blocky type tread pattern.

i guess i need to get those drag radial tire for my car, i ran my 670whp 2jz swap cefiro on a stupid dunlop dirreza street tire and my car ended up spinning halfway of the track, my wheels kept on lossing traction until 3rd gear lol...and i havent had a chance to fit an lsd yet since the car is fresh build...it was fun tho and the track is not a prepped track too...

Wait in the beginning it says the radials have less rolling resistance due to a smaller contact patch but are gripper? And it runs a slower trap speed at the end? Can someone help explain this to me

OK. We said drag radials have lower rolling resistance that a cross ply, but both types of drag racing tyre have more rolling resistance than a regular high performance street tyre

You gave a lot of great info but what you left out is actual tire size. When going with a drag radial tire you want to go with a little taller tire so you can drop tire pressure and with that it Also changes you speed since it's a taller tire.

We dont use launch control or "2-step" to help conserve the factory oil pump. launch control is basically a limiter and the shock loading on the pump wears it out

Had a friend with a '05 mustang shelby, nitrous 4.6 (not gt500). He drove around for 5 days on those slick radials....mofo hit a puddle and spun off the highway into the grass in the center.. lol.... lesson to be learned here on these sick asss tyres AND he got a faulty equipment ticket for wrecking.

Ok..... someone told me that I could twist my stock drive shaft by putting the 305's on my rears. Another question for you, sir, should I put on a K&N air filter in my Hellcat.. would it decrease the already low MPG? I get about 11.4 mpg currently (in Eco mode). Thanks @SL02VGT

Quick question, considering how close ratio the gears are currently...have you tried launching from 2nd gear? I know a lot gtr owners had some results with improvements. And considering this is the Getrag box it should take the hit surely. Are you able to try it Andrew?

We tried it on street tyres and it just blew the tyres off or bogged,like when you have a really long first gear in a GT-R. We are looking at trying it on the Hoosiers with launch control in the future. Problem is we only get one good shot at it before we get booted

Only got 200hp and i cant keep power on the ground. VW bora TDI (on second gear, as soon as the turbo opens the wheels start spinning. I ordered two semi slick for the front today. They are not as expensive as these ones. Nankang ns2r, it might be more than enough for 200hp.

Diesel torque tend to do that. I had a 1.2L turbo diesel Cirtroen C3 with 70HP, and it broke traction in 2nd too when the turbo came on.

I thought drag radials have more rolling resistance because it has the maximum surface area for a tire to grip the road. More surface area contacting the road would mean a larger contact patch and thus more rolling resistance which generally equates to more grip. I'm confused now.

non that you could measure. both wheels are same size and both high quality one piece wheels. The different in weight of tyres is more than weight of wheels

DOT approval is for the USA, so no, they are technically not road legal in Australia like most drag radials.

same die wheel and minimal weight difference. under 500grams. the tyre weight difference is more than the rims. it makes no measurable difference

+RACING WORLD TV They are department of transportation certified for use on public roads in the USA. Rubber compounds, tread (very little to speak of), and sidewall construction all matters. True racing slicks, drag or track, don't have any of the compromises these are forced to.

Stock bottom end and head, yes. Just gasket, studs and drop in cams. We are getting valve float now ( reducing mph) so valve spring upgrade next. Next mythbusted is " how much power can stock RB26 make"

+NjBorn Next video might be "how much power can a stock engine reliably make" as we are fitting valve springs and turing it up more next. If it doesn't break by end of this year we will do a 2.6 vs Stroker video. We will more than likely go for a 2.8L stroker inside same block rather than change to RB30. Main reasons being that RB30 getting hard to find and it is actually quite a big job to switch. I like the idea of using same block and bolting straight back in with no changes and bills crank means can rev harder too

60 ft times are for less horsepower cars on the launch sub 3000# car maybe 25k , and 1.8 60ft , street tires can reach same . if you are applying more torque at launch then drag radials are needed, ie 1.5 60 ft

So slicks have a higher grip coefficient than treadled street tires. Wow you guys are blowing mind here. Can we get some more tests to confirm this highly controversial finding? On a more serious note the title and premise suck but it is cool to see the numbers compared side by side on the same vehicle. I am surprised that the gains were that small. I guess you busted some hype if nothing else.

+SlidinShadow Sure thing buddy. So what you want to do is use your left foot to apply pressure to the left pedal. This causes the clutch to disengage. Then using your hand shift the gear lever into the 1st gear position. Now using your right foot on the right pedal you can increase the rpm of the engine. Ok here is the tricky part... take your left foot off the left pedal which will engage the clutch and make the car move in a forward direction. Hope this helps you out!

How has the reliability been on yalls r32?

Been making over 600 wheel horsepower for a year now. 3 airport events, 2 powercruise events and 3 times at the drag strip plus 3 dyno sessions in 12 months. All good!

it would make no difference that is measurable. Both wheels are same size and high quality one piece wheel. The difference in weight of tyres is more than the wheels

Only problem I see is that you are using different wheels ,so you are changing the wheel weight but either way the drag radials are a better choice

The difference in weight was less than a pound over all four wheels. In fact the difference in th weight of the tyres is sometimes more than the wheels. Here is a long list of how much difference the wheel weights made....... ..... zero

increased rolling resistance from sticky tyres leads to lower ETs if you have same power. Kind of like lower dyne reading from stickier tyres

It's getting to the other end quicker now so it doesn't waste as much time building up speed. Once you pass a certain power level I presume that goes out the window though.

Because less wheel spin means slower mph's.
