Toyotaro didn't forget. Toriyama wasn't the only one writing this. Plus, romantic stuff with them has been a thing since Battle Of Gods, when it was clearly brought up that they reverted to kids
I kind of think Mai not only got younger physically, but mentally also. She still has her memories as an adult, but mentally I think she also deaged. But still more mature than Trunks because girls mature faster than boys. It's also a second chance (unless the make a wish to go back to their original age) for her to grow up being good instead of being bad like before.
But she’s still self aware of everything including her real age and I think she said something about turning 40 back in battle of gods. Her full adult memory should be enough to keep her from being interested in kids.
@@ElectricalFlare7201 How does memory determine anything? A child can experience the exact same memories as an adult can. Try again with your trash arguments.
I'm pretty sure Trunks and Mai are definitely going to be a thing. Only because Future Trunks and Future Mai are 100% a thing, so might as well have the main Trunks be with Mai as well. Plus, I'm pretty sure Toriyama hasn't really thought about the implications of them being in a relationship, I think he just finds the idea of them being together funny. Besides, I've seen other anime, and let's just say I rather have Trunks and Mai be in a relationship then whatever the hell Seven Deadly Sins did.
Yeah for real, people keep like panicking and making a big fuss over this when Seven deadly sins and a few slice of life anime’s did so much worse and I really mean, a lot worse.
Mai's is ironically living the fantasy that most older women have, the dream of going back to their teens and 20's. And getting a second chance to re-experience their younger years. That includes the love and romance portion lol 😂🤣😂
@@Hypershell it's kind of silly for Bulma to wish for minor cosmetic fixes to keep her appearance young when she could just wish for something along the lines of eternal youth (or to stay young as long as she wishes to still be young).
like i said before. This must be the least controversial relationship i've seen in fiction. Even if we factor in the rest of the world and not only Japan.

Future Trunks being with Mai was fine because as far as we know those two didnt meet each other until Trunks was in his 20's. Yeah Mai is still technically older than Bulma mentally but her body at this point is i'm guessing around the same as Trunks, i think. The issue i can see with current timeline Trunks and Mai is that those two known each other since Trunks was a little kid, Mai is still mentally older. I can see how this can be seen as grooming in a sense. I guess they can retcon what the pilaf gang remembers before they were transformed into kids, like as time goes on they forget more and more about their past, i guess
To be fair, toriyama has always done weird stuff like this. I still remember how master roshi perved on Bulma, when she was still in high school age around the time dragon ball was still going. Therefore it's really speaks more on how pervy toriyama is when you think about it.
@@donnieconyers2829 uh not sure how portraying an old guy in Manga, who's literally older than all our relatives combined, perving on a teenage girl makes him a real man. I don't remember bulmas exact age but I remember in the dub, it was mentioned goku was 12, during dragon ball mostly, and bulma wasn't much older so she was probably around 15 or 16 which would make it very weird. Heck even if she was 18 in dragon ball, it would still come off as weird.
It's not "grooming" when Mai is currently rejecting Trunks and even if they do get together Mai never groomed him. Trunks naturally fell for her from her looks.
If it's used to make present Trunks more grown up and closer to the mentality of future Trunks, I think we'd see less people finding it weird to be honest.
I disagree. I would love to see a different version of trunks. We already have Future Trunks, wherever the hell he is right now. I never understood though, why he didn't stay in their universe.
@@grandilo5983 YES!!! Me, too. @@grandilo5983 They'll never be exactly the same, since present Trunks isn't living the apocalypse. But present could stand to be more like him: Focused, protective, and a leader. He's just having a harder time finding his way in peace.

Mai may have her memories, but when she reverted to being a kid her brain would revert back as well. Brains are not fully developed until like 25 or something. Also her body would be releasing hormones again as it did back in her first puberty. So she isn’t a full adult and has the hormones of a teenager. She is sort of a adult/teenage hybrid. This isn’t a crazy relationship, but trunks will have to become more mature before it can happen
Twitter folks will cry “mental age” but Mai wished to be younger lasted I check (well Pilaf caused it but still) & now she’s a teen like trunks I support Trunks x Mai fully Mental age = fake woke rage with reach
@@ElectricalFlare7201 The question of the day though is, why didn't Bulma asked to turn 25 again then? Why waste so many wishes on Shenron to do smaller stuff than to just turn her young again?
Future Trunks was an adult and older when he met Mai. Future is 30 and it’s definitely more plausible and acceptable so it’s definitely not weird unlike with Present Trunks.
Ehh this is a non issue to me. In the future timeline they are together, and he as a grown man, chose her to be with. In the current timeline, there is no indication that Mai is even giving him the time of day. He hasn't grown to become the version of Trunks that she will like
Let's be honest here, Mai isn't being written as an adult woman stuck in a younger body at all, they make some funny remarks about it kinda rarely but she was almost retconned at this point If you really want something to be angry about and you put the written canon above anything else then suit yourself, but there's nothing going on in the series
Saying that "Mai is an adult trapped in a child's body" is making the assumption that Mai has an adult mind, but it could be that her brain has reverted to a child's, but with just the memories of her past?
She just needs to see him fight seriously and what his attitude his like when fighting. So far, even going back to the Black arc, she just sees him as a goofball.
One other thing I will say is most people who are younger aren't going to bother reading the OG dragon ball so to those readers they won't even notice Mai as anything other then a teenager. So not only could this not happen in the real world its also most likely gonna fly over most casual readers heads
until thats confirmed its headcannon. its an easy fix by retconning it to say they lost their memories. but if they go ahead with this relationship and say noting about that, it would be ultra suspicious
It’s like a bizarre situation in which a boy has a crush on a girl that he’s friends with, but the girl doesn’t notice while she instead has a major crush on the boy’s “cooler” older brother, lol.
It’s not something that necessarily “bothers” me, but I do think there’s a certain level of weirdness to it that’s undeniable no matter how you try to spin it. The general belief is that the wish totally converted Mai’s mindset to that of a child her age, but it still gets a bit iffy because her memories remained. And at the end of the day, are humans not a product of their memories?
humans being a product of memories doesn't account for the physical development of the brain, and the wish that turned her into a child would have made her brain physically that of a child.
@@franciscoarzapalozapata4610 No need to get defensive, like I said in my very first sentence, it doesn’t bother me (there’s far too many real world problems to get worked up about side characters in DBZ having a questionable romance lol). But like I said, it is undeniably a little weird

No in fact humans are not just a product of their memories how their brains process and react to situations and human brains don't fully develop until their mid-twenties. That being said it's ridiculous to find this controversial since mai isn't interested in an underaged trunks.
I care more about Akira Toriyama finally writing an on-screen flesh out romance than the character's age. Hope Present Trunks mature to be a bit more like his future variant.
Nah, I like the future and present versions not being the same, especially when it makes sense that they lived different lives. This Trunks will mature but he won't be like the future version.
Never see anyone complain that Bulma gets into a relationship with Vegeta after Namek. He ruthlessly kills all of her friends and boyfriend at the time. Mai & Trunks isn’t really that weird yet, it will be weird if the relationship happens while Trunks is young but at least there’s a “line” in the sand that Mai crushes on Future Trunks and not young Trunks but in DB relationships are all over place & shouldn’t be taken too seriously

Thing about Mai is she didn’t really have a choice but to relive her life, ultimately even if she were to try living as an adult no one would take her serious. If she had friends most of them are like goku’s age or are old, if you were turned back to a kid even with all your memories you pretty much have to reinvent yourself. In the case of Mai she pretty much lost her life so that’s why I don’t see this as weird because she had to literally grow up twice, let’s not forget if she went for someone older wouldn’t that make the guy question everything, if she went for older men that’s actually nasty on the man’s part.
Absolutely. If Mai's most recent adult memories are 17 years ago, that is nowhere near the same thing as Bulma accumulating 17 years of adult experience while Mai was living a second childhood.
@@Hypershell Exactly, my point it’s not like she doesn’t have her memories, but at that point what would it matter since she grew up again. Isn’t beerus billions of years old and is trying to take Broly’s girl ? And get no one questions that.
I dont mind if they do get together because its dragon ball. This is not the first time they did this. Krillin is Goku’s age and android 18 spent much of her waking life in a coma being experimented on and locked away. She was physically and mentally a teenager when she recriprocated krillins affections. And they make a great couple for a lot of reasons. Its fiction snd dragon ball functions on so many odd what-ifs that its issues we might see as bad have no presedent.
To me is not a big deal. Is it weird? maybe, but I still think it has to do with with cultural differences with Japan and this isn't even limited to DB. Even if DB is a popular series around the world it's still thought and writen mostly taking in mind Japanese population first, and Japanese media has many things similar or much more controversial than this. Take a look at some of those "Isekai" stories. Old dude dies and reincarnates into a child but retains memories of previous life as an adult and gets into relationships with girls way below his mental age. it's in someway a similar concept and things like that get popular in Japan, not because of this but because they simply don't care that much about it.
Chichi did bring it up once about Goku being a child, right after he returns to the family to explain what happened. It was part of the reason she was crying.
I think Mai is 2-3 years older than Bulma. She says she's almost 41 in Battle of Gods while Bulma in the same movie is says she's 38. That would also mean Battle of Gods takes place less than a year after Kid Buu is defeated, which it self was 7 years after the Android Saga. In the Android saga, Mai is turned into an infant at the age of 33. Bulma is 31, Trunks is 0, and Future Trunks is 20 (he says he's 17 when he first meets everyone, 3 years before the Androids). So Trunks and Mai are physically the same age, but Mai is chronologically older by 33 years. In Battle of Gods, Future Trunks would be around 28. Future Mai would be 28 + 33, which equals 61.
Mai has the memories of her former life but not the maturity. When she first met Trunks, she was physically, mentally, and emotionally his age. I don’t think their relationship is controversial because, after all, it is an anime and weirder things have happened in anime. Also, there is some truth in fiction that girls mature faster than boys. I think that’s what we’re seeing with Mai.
I thought the most controversial relationship is between Master Roshi and Kame turtle. You can't convince me that something is living with Master Roshi and things have not happened.
Honestly I actually quite like this relationship and I do hope they become a thing because at this point Mai is probably mentally de aged too but still has her old memories.
@@3Standoutstbh I’m surprised there are people who haven’t came to that conclusion. I thought it was pretty clear that the Pilaf group became mentally and physically children. It was like a soft reboot for the characters.
This video actually only made me more excited to see what could happen in this arc. I don’t need or want romance in DB but I do think it would be nice to have characters have those concerns for once (not just Krillin being horny for 18). The genius potential of putting the half-Saiyans in the lead roles is that it opens the door for more human and relatable stories. We’ve been so committed to Goku and Vegeta’s singular mindsets for so long. It’s so refreshing to be out of that. Toriyama himself thought so when he out Gohan in the lead but of course ultimately was not as ready to commit to it as he might’ve wished to be initially. And the Trunks and Mai thing, creepy as it can be, I won’t deny, I think offers an interesting opportunity. The video alludes to it. What if it forms the basis for present Trunks to grow up a bit and become more akin to his future counterpart. I would really like that to be where this is going. Also, because this Mai thing, like it or not, has been around in some form for 10 years real time and has, in the narrative, touched multiple timelines, it’s kind of the biggest romance in DB. To me, they’ve planted the flag now that it needs to be resolved some way.
@@violajackson6885 hahaha I’m not one of those people who wants DB to be a slice of life anime. I just think quality long form storytelling requires a wider range than what we’ve been getting throughout most of Super. I’ve mostly enjoyed it but I crave something more.
Future Trunks has like the coolest introduction of any character possibly ever! Of course he's cooler. Lol. I won't be surprised if the fact that there's seem to be a lot of other people their age in the future timeline helped those two get together. Oh, thought, Future Trunks is closer to present Mai's age when they meet in the main timeline. So yeah, it totally makes since she'd crush on him and not the Trunks that physically looks the same age.
I think you thinking about it too much bro. Yeah she’s technically older but physically she’s younger so what’s the problem? N it’s just a manga not real.
It’s just weird nobody takes it as seriously as you think. Are you going to tell people it’s not real when they dislike a villain because of what they did in the story? Yeah same thing.
Maybe that’s where that line about Mai not being able to feel comes from, she physically to young to date or feel attraction actual adult men and she’s mentally to old to date or feel emotions towards boys that are her physical age.
I mean, is it any weirder than the Doctor from Doctor Who falling for some of his companions (10 and Rose, 11 and Clara, for example) who are centuries younger than him, despite his physical appearance due to regeneration?
It's not a big deal, for one people loved series like inuyasha and shipped rukia and ichigo(rukia is over 100 years old), heck true blood with suki and Bill Compton. And these aren't even ecchi series(perverted series). Now I'm not condoning it, my point is: where was that same energy with kagome×inuyasha, rukia×ichigo, lost goes on
I also liked what another video said about this that I saw. Imagine being Mai right now. Being forced to relive her high school days while knowing that she really doesn't fit in there because mentally she is so much older. She doesn't fit in as a teenager or an adult. I'm 34 and when I hear my neice talking about her high school drama I really can't stand it sometimes. Now imagine if I had suddenly had to be around that 24/7 it would be rough. I would not want to be in her shoes right now.
I mean maybe but she was also somewhat mature when she was 19 here and right about now she would be 16 or 17 (17 definitely by Super Hero) Furthermore, she for the most part (the pilaf gang included) acted the age she was reverted to. Even highschoolers at the age she is now feel this way believe or not. Hell I knew a few people like that back when I was still in highschool (I'm a graduate of 2019).
If anything I found the Battle Of Gods joke more creepy than anything going on now. We talk in the martial arts discussions about the difference between instinct and conscious thought, and I think the same applies to Mai. Being in a younger body means she has younger body chemistry, which means we realistically expect her to have feelings and instincts matching her biology. So it's not really fair to say she has the mentality of a 50 year old in a young body, because even that only applies to one piece of her mentality. It's not the same thing as if, say, an adult was projecting a hologram of a younger body. If kid Mai is psychologically 40, why does she squabble with Shu over what sum of money to wish for? Why does she freak out at baby Pan needing to be changed? The other issue is that the longer Mai has lived in that younger body, the more "normal" it is to her and the less reason she has to remotely consider going back. If we take those bonus pages at face value, and this has been going on for longer than Goten has been alive, then the people who expect Mai to undo her deaging are basically suggesting she should wish for a 50 year old body despite never being in a 40 year old body. That's not going to happen, at least not by her choice. And her life experience doesn't even match someone who lived as long as her anyway, because so much of it was spent in the full length of that second childhood. To put it another way, if Mai's most recent "adult" memories are 17 years or so in the past, faded over time the same as any normal memory does, then why would we assume they remain at the forefront of her mentality now? They wouldn't be. Ultimately, I think Mai is attracted to the personality of future Trunks and has no tolerance for present Trunk's awkwardness. She could then be the motivation to pull present Trunks's head out of the clouds and help him find his focus in life. And who knows, maybe that's exactly what Bulma is aiming for. Sending Mai to school is one thing, but she also very specifically "assigned" Trunks to walk her there. Remember, it's not just that Bulma knew Mai in the past; she's met future Mai, too.
Perfectly said. I think that there's gonna be a point where Mai rejects Trunks because of her lack of interest in him and that's gonna be his development into maturity and being a lot more realistic about his situations instead of the really immature & cowardly Trunks we've seen in the last 2 chapters. Also the way Trunks is head over heels for Mai makes me think that we won't be seeing them together anytime soon since he's pretty spoilt in terms of getting what he wants so him not getting Mai is gonna be a dealbreaker for him.
@geekdom101 As a psychology student, thank you for citing in the work of David M. Buss. A number of people out there like to use the word "psychology" without giving credit to the author. You were right that from a evolutionary perspective, woman are more likely to be attracted to a man's personality than their looks. However, do also note that David did published another study titled "Sex differences in human mate preferences: Evolutionary hypotheses tested in 37 cultures" where based on the results, cultural difference among women exist. In terms of good propective parters, Asian women rate men with ambition and industriousness highest in attraction, followed by Amercians, and then (western) Europeans. Hence, if we look at Mai's interest towards F.Trunks, it is not difficult to understand why Mai likes him over present Trunks. Future Trunks displayed both vision and diligence. As of now, present trunks lacks both qualities. They are an immediate turn-off from Mai's perspective.
Mai & Trunks relationship is not a big deal . Just not something we’re used to seeing in Dragon ball : a romance . It’s fine it doesn’t interrupt the story and has some funny moments . Just enjoy the ride .
bro people need to learn to separate "fiction from non fiction", "fact from reality". This shit is getting wild we have people actually developing crushes on fictional characters, and starting pta meeting because they read to far into things that aren't there.
who cares if mai dates trunks like once he's an adult then nobody should care and even then its fiction it can't hurt you, if you don't like it DON'T WATCH IT...... plus he's part Saiyan, who know what there dating rules for them are like.
Mai literally likes the older version of Trunks, its not weird. As Trunks matures mentally and physically, the relationship will advance. There’s zero controversy in this.
This is really a non issue in my opinion let's be real if anybody had a second chance at being young again you would absolutely mess with girls and boys your new age not a single person would actually say "well I used to be 57 so I won't date anyone until I'm 30" nobody would say nobody would do that
I won't mind this as much as long they wait for trunks to be of age and they further his and goten's development as characters. People. Like to throw around the whole "in japan the age of consent is 13" but if you actually look into the law a bit further, you realize that many local governments in japan have the age of consent at around 16-20 years old. Keep in mind this is at the local level and can very much vary between local governments. The National level itself is also more nuanced then people think when It comes to legal age.
People forget that they are physically the same age and we irl can't just revert back to our younger self with a magical wish granting dragon who can be summoned by gathering 7 mystical balls with stars inside it.
Honestly i think it would be more weird if Mai was to mess with someone her actual age like a 30+ year old because at the end of the day she’s still in a kids/teen body

It's a fictional story and you're getting worked up over it.
I'm going to add one more thing. And it's a out the future trunks arc. If you were to go with you're logic, Mai should have fell in love with yajirobe instead of trunks based on age alone
Trunks and Mai's relationship brings out Spider-Man 2 vibes, I can't wait for the big reveal at the end when Mai finds out Trunk's real identity. Pure Gold. I'm looking forward to their development.
so folks are okay with the future trunks and future mai pair up, yet some people dont approve of the teenage relationship. Makes no sense, since they are both physically the same age.
I haven't kept up with the manga, so it's hard to say what kind of character Mai has been written as these days. But we have to remember that the original Mai from the DB story was written to be mentally immature for comedic purposes, despite initially appearing to be a mysterious adult. The whole joke about Mai and the Pilaf gang thinking holding hands or blowing a kiss was "lewd" was set up to have the punchline of Bulma, an actual lewd person, not taking their immature torture antics seriously. In BOG, despite Mai being a 40-year-old in a child's body for jokes, her immature mindset was also kept since she got flustered when Trunks noticed he was against her chest. So while she remembers her actual age, both her physical age and her way of thinking were closer to that of a child. Not saying this isn't a wierd, bizarre, or even creepy sounding plot if an eventual romance happens, but for all intents and purposes, its written to be funny and endearing, not malicious.
Personally, I don't see a big deal with Trunks having a crush on Mai, having a crush in it of itself is not a huge deal, but pursuing a relationship is a whole other thing (present day Trunks and current Mai of course)
Idk, she's a kid, he's a kid. I don't look at it any deeper than that. Yeah she used to be an adult but she isn't anymore 🤷🏾♂️ I don't look at it as "an older lady in a teenager's body." She's not just younger in appearance like say Tsunade from Naruto, she was literally made into a kid again
Tbh, I always felt like she got de-aged mentally as well. I mean, since Shen Long took their wish literally, so I doubt he made them look younger just physically. So I have no problem with this ship, in fact I think it's cute. There been weirder ships after all
So I had no idea Toyotaro had already explained what happened to the Pilaf gang but I must say wow he really overcomplicated a situation that could have been solved with a simple: "oh they are the children of the original Pilaf gang" maybe Pilaf cameos picking them up and explaining that he moved on from world conquest to start a small rival company to Capsule Corp but his son inherited his desire after he heard the stories from his youth
Tbh, I forgot about the Trunks/Mai thing. I don't really pay much attention to the romances in Dragon Ball. I just enjoy the adventures that Goku and his friends go on.
Pilaf, Mai, and Shou wished to become kids. They became kids, not "adults" in a child's body. Yes they have the memories from when they were adults but they would have had their minds, emotions, and behaviors become that of children.
My thing is that regardless of whether you think this relationship is messed up or not I think it would just be better if trunks went after a new character other then somebody from the old dragon ball series. Also please don’t give me this “Mai is basically a new character nonsense” It doesn’t matter if she acts different she still has the same history and the character design is literally a teen version of her adult design. She is also starting to act like her older self again as she was literally analyzing things in the latest chapter just like her past self. Mai is not new. Anyways yeah I think trunks should have just gone after someone else.
Lots of newer and casual fans (in the west) didn’t read/watch OG dragon ball, they just know it as trivia facts. Like “hey did you know these three are actually from the original Dragon Ball manga.” So to a good amount of people, Mai is a fairly new character.
@@RaccoonProductionsInc It’s not about it being her new to them it’s about her being new in general which she isn’t. These are facts not opinions. There is no argument.
In the original db Roshi talks about how the dragon ball bring all of the togheter and with time became better people all of them. So for me is not for older characters to came back to the group and change for the better, even getting in relationships with each other.
@@shinkai9kami162 If Mai rejects Trunks, he will find another new girl, Mai will be jealous. I don't think he's interested in any other girls expect for Mai only.
To me is fine not so controversial as you put because first things first: she is not an adult or older woman biologicaly speaking anymore because the wish turned into a baby, the same similar stuff Goku in GT was put when he was turned into a kid in the same age Pilaf met him, she is only mature only in mind and persona. Mai has advantage in a relationship with anyone she wants because she has a mature persona to be responsible and taking care of herself, something we saw when rejected going into the cinema with Trunks because she has work and responsabilities and also was the one noticing Beta was not human. Being mature is important in a relationship and if you have problems if she wants a relationship with Trunks then you will have problems too if she wants to date another guy besides Trunks because you only will see the older Mai and not the new Mai because she has a new persona, a new life because she begun her life cycle again because of the wish, all the things she experienced after and all the new allies and friends she has. I saw worse relationship in fiction than this she is only a mature teen with little much more mature persona than the normal average person.
